A few days ago some security files were downloaded in my sys (WinXP Home with SP2) as part of the MS Auto Updates out of which one security file KB 923980 also downloaded and installed. But in spite of such insrallation, this particular file keeps coming into the Notifn. Area of the Task bar and on placing my cursor over it, I find that it is insisting to be installed again manually.

At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.

I have re-run AdAware, Spybot, Housecall and even done a WinXP CD repair with all reporting that everything should be OK. Still, whenever I open Explorer (either one) and each different folder in Windows Explorer a couple of succesive "Windows Installer" windows pop up with "Preparing to install" and then they close without anything else. Also, there is very little that can be installed now. Norton Internet Security reports that it can't be installed now. Windows Update gives an error after you tell it to install the updates or display the detailed updates. Sun's Java says that there is another install that has to be finished first. Messenger says that it has a new version that has to be installed before you can use it but after it runs for a while it reports that it can't be installed.
I recieved an auto update to install windows xp service pack 3, while following the wizard currently at the end it is asking me to back up my system. I don't know how to do that. I have ALOT of pictures I don't want to lose. If I cancel will it know that I never updated & ask me to update it again at a later time? How great is the risk if I just continue without backing up?

After installing the latest driver, the 93.71 version I'm getting the Notification Icon on the task bar telling me an update for the Nvidia Card is available, version 52.16, I guess the basic update that was downloaded as part of the SP3 update.Is there a way to dismiss this update so that it doesn't continue to appear? For some reason the auto update doesn't recognize there is a newer driver available, the WHQL 93.71.
View 6 Replies View Relatedmy friend give me his Gateway 610XL all in one PC to fix a few problems. one of them was internet explorer not showing up when called for, that was an easy fix; however, this next problem has to do with USB devices and it's giving me a bit of trouble. basically, any USB devices i connect to it, windows doesn't auto install or even try to auto install the drivers. no matter what i connect to it (mouse, keyboard, thumb drive). i can go into device manager and install the drivers manually just fine but i would like to fix the auto install feature for my friend cuz he's not that good with computers. i checked and made sure the following services are enabled:
plug and play
upnp
user mode driver framework
shell hardware detection
the problem persist even in safe mode. one thing i noticed is when i go to control panel and then hit add hardware, i get a message that says this: "you can only install one device at a time. when the other device installation is complete, try this wizard again" (some where along those lines). i get that message even with nothing connected to the USB ports. i'm guessing what ever this "other device" is, it hanging up pnp so how do i go about aborting that installation? i don't really see anything in the task bar that even suggest a driver installation is on the way. this is running Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3 by that way.

View 2 Replies View Relatedfirst of all, under the settings for window's firewall, i am not able to choose whether or not i want to enable it or disable it. it is set as disabled and both the enable/disable buttons are greyed out and i cannot click it. second, my auto update keeps turning itself off. after setting it back on, it will turn off the next time i boot my computer. third, i'm having some networking problems. i can connect onto the other computers of my network, however the other computers cannot connect to me. are all these problems related in anyway?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI posted the same question on MS newsgroup but since nobody replies to it and there are about 8 people with the same problem, I thought that I look somewhere else for answer. I'm in the middle of formatting a hard drive, doing the research while waiting. good thing I have another computer to use. I installed the latest MS Windows Update this afternoon (about 10 hours ago) and it renders my computer unusable. the computer won't boot, it just got stuck on the Windows XP screen where the blue bars go from left to right. after about 2-3 runs, it started to get very slow and the little blocks that make up the bars shows up very slowly like in slow motion. I don't (can't) remember the exact KB number, but I remember installing about 7-8 updates. the critical (required) ones are the malicious software removal thing, a patch for IE6, outlook express patch, ms word patch. then I add the root something update and an update for my network card. hen it told me to reboot the computer but the computer will not boot. I tried another hard drive that I haven't used since March, it performs the same "problem", the bars go for about 2-3 runs then it started to get very slow. then it just sits there, stuck, until I press the reset button. I'm currently formatting this hard drive and leaving the updated one untouched because I don't want to have to format that one. too much data and too many programs to reinstall (I want clean install and clean registry).

I isolated KB892130 as the validation tool that will not validate with Microsoft before the other updates can be installed. I have turned off Avast (antivirus), but did not disable it. On my portable computer on which I have made a briefcase, I moved some files into it. When I try to update, hoping it will update my home computer, it say some files are read-only and these files were not updated. It is only the files I move in. When I check properties on the individual files, it say they are not read-only. When I check properties on the folders in the briefcase however, the read-only is checked and when I uncheck and go back in, it still is read-only. I am using XP Home Edition.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop that is one year old. It has 2GB of memory and a Duo Core T5600 processor. I am using Windows XP Home Edition with SP2. I have Norton 360 Version 2.0, Spy Sweeper, and Registry Mechanic installed. I have other programs such as Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, Microsoft Office 2003 with Word as my default, Google Email, and Family Tree Maker 2005 installed. Note that the laptop is a �small business� version instead of �Home and Home Office� version, if that makes any difference.
I have received my Windows Update notification that Service Pack 3 is ready for me to download. I have not downloaded yet. I have done some extensive research on problems with SP3 and have found a lot of information, much which is not too praising of SP3. However, most of the stuff that I have found on the internet is �older� stuff. I have searched MS data to see what they have posted about SP3 problems. What I am looking for here is has anyone had or know of any problems with SP3 that has been download say in the past three months or so?
