Help And Support Center - Search MS Knowledge Base

Aug 25, 2007

When I search in Help and Support Center, no results are returned for the Microsoft Knowledge Base. I know this worked in the past (though how long ago, I have no idea). The option to search the Knowledge Base is checked. There are no other system problems to indicate corrupt system files. I've searched the web but haven't found anything yet that seems to apply. I'm reluctant to run a full SFC scan or repair the entire Help and Support feature since all other options appear to be working.

Update IIS Meta Base Not Installed / Disabled Machine

Jul 14, 2005

After installing .Net Framework 1.1 and its Service Pack 1from Windows Updates this morning, I found some errors in the Application section of Event Viewer. I can't find much information about them and what little I found I didn't really understand. Could someone please tell me if I need to do anything? They are:

[1] Event Type: Warning
Event Source: ASP.NET 1.1.4322.0
Event Category: Setup
Event ID:1020
Date: 13/07/2005
Time: 10:24:37 AM
User: N/A
Computer: 6498B0J
Description:
Updates to the IIS metabase were aborted because IIS is either not installed or is disabled on this machine. To configure ASP.NET to run in IIS, please install or enable IIS and re-register ASP.NET using aspnet_regiis.exe /i. For more information, see Help and Support Center at.....

I had no idea what IIS was and whether I ought to have it, so I followed the link. This led to a "Sorry, no further information" message. I searched the Knowledge Base and found KB 555150, "How to add support for ASP.NET in Internet Information Services 5 and 5.1". This then pointed me to KB 308192, "How to configure Windows 2000 as a Web server".

Recurring Message To Install Base System Device

Aug 3, 2009

After our Dell Inspiron E1505 recently crashed , Dell talked us thru diagnostics and finally sent us a replacement(refurbished) Toshiba hard drive to install in our computer. After installing it, and reloading all of the software for Windows XP, MS Office Small Business 2003, drivers and utilities, using the discs that came with the computer, we have a "Found New Hardware" window that pops up - Wizard trying to install a "Base System Device" everytime we turn the computer on. It asks for a disc but none of my existing ones seem to be the correct one. I've given it permission to connect to the Internet to "find" the software but nothing works. Also, since the crash/re-install, our C drive only has 12.4 GBs of total disc space, and of that, only 1.2 is still free space. My D drive has about 37 GBs of disc space. Could these two problems be connected? The computer was running so slow and we would periodically get a message "low virtual memory". This weekend, I moved as many of our documents as possible to the D drive to try and free up space. It's a little better, but why do I have such a small amount of disc space?

Cant Delete Update Patch File

Oct 24, 2005

the second encounter 1.0 to 1.5 update patch onto my desktop, but I canceled as I realised that I didn't need it. So, now I cannot delete it! It it is not set to read-only, it is not in my Firefox's browser downloads list, as I applied the setting of auto-clean up downloads, and I removed it from the list. The thing is that it is looking stupid on my desktop. A stupid pointless block iconed execute file. I made a copy of it and renamed it but still I cannot delete it! An Error comes up saying: 'Error Deleting File or Folder Cannot delte Copy of secondencounterpatch150publicbeta: It is being used by another person or program. File Attributes Won't Allow Update On Home Computer?

On my portable computer on which I have made a briefcase, I moved some files into it. When I try to update, hoping it will update my home computer, it say some files are read-only and these files were not updated. It is only the files I move in. When I check properties on the individual files, it say they are not read-only. When I check properties on the folders in the briefcase however, the read-only is checked and when I uncheck and go back in, it still is read-only. I am using XP Home Edition.

Notification Received Update SP3 - Not Downloaded File

May 11, 2008

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop that is one year old. It has 2GB of memory and a Duo Core T5600 processor. I am using Windows XP Home Edition with SP2. I have Norton 360 Version 2.0, Spy Sweeper, and Registry Mechanic installed. I have other programs such as Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, Microsoft Office 2003 with Word as my default, Google Email, and Family Tree Maker 2005 installed. Note that the laptop is a small business version instead of Home and Home Office version, if that makes any difference.

I have received my Windows Update notification that Service Pack 3 is ready for me to download. I have not downloaded yet. I have done some extensive research on problems with SP3 and have found a lot of information, much which is not too praising of SP3. However, most of the stuff that I have found on the internet is older stuff. I have searched MS data to see what they have posted about SP3 problems. What I am looking for here is has anyone had or know of any problems with SP3 that has been download say in the past three months or so?

Automatic Update Downloads - Due To Missing File

Feb 26, 2007

I have my computer set up to automatically detect Windows XP updates and download them. Updates install when you shut down. Recently a bunch of downloads occurred but one of them did not get installed due to a missing file (message came from the MS update system). Now, everytime I shutdown, that update attempts to install and stops with the same error that requires a manual response from me.

How do I tell Windows to stop trying to install that update. I want to maintain the auto-update feature but want to get rid of just that one that is not working. I can shut down without the install attempting (option in the shut down window) but I want to get rid of it altogether. I can't find the files or commands that trigger the update on shutdown.

Update Firewall – Windows Not Start Up - File Missing Or Corrupt)

Feb 9, 2008

I restarted my computer after installing an update to my firewall program. I get the "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WindowsSystem32Hal.dll" I tried to do system restore first (F10) and it tried to start windows to start the system restore program I suppose and so of course the same error message came up. After retrying a few times, I tried the other option in system recovery (f10) and it said user data would be preserved but I may need to reinstall programs, so I thought that'd be fine. I let it do it's thing and came back later when it was done and it looked like the first time I started my computer ever where it has that cheesy music and asks you to name your computer, etc. So I'm finally in Windows again (XP Media Edition 2002 SP2) and the first thing I check is my documents folder and all my documents are gone! I checked the properties of the C: drive and it shows that I've used 224GB space, but I can't find my files anywhere. I've looked in all profiles in documents and settings. It seems like the files should be somewhere since the hard drive shows that I have that used space.

I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.

Uninstalling An Update Performed By Update Process?

I would like to know how to uninstall an update that was performed by Windows Update. The update itself was in the "Hardware, Optional" Type list (ie. not
the"High Priority"or the"Software,Optional" list)The update that was installed shows up in the History log correctly I believe that Microsoft incorrectly scanned the computer and assigned a hardware update that pertained to a different type of hardware ... specifically, the update pertained to an "IBM Thinkpad UltraNav Pointing Device" whereas the actual hardware is a Toshiba Satellite with a Synaptics Touchpad".
