When I search in Help and Support Center, no results are returned for the Microsoft Knowledge Base. I know this worked in the past (though how long ago, I have no idea). The option to search the Knowledge Base is checked. There are no other system problems to indicate corrupt system files. I've searched the web but haven't found anything yet that seems to apply. I'm reluctant to run a full SFC scan or repair the entire Help and Support feature since all other options appear to be working.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Word Version 2002 and it has "script" options for "Tools" menu. I copied the text into Word and was going to use the "Remove all Script" tool but it is not highlited? I've never used it before so I am not sure if that is what I need to use anyway but it made sense if I want just "plain text". If it is the tool I need, can you tell me how to get it to highlite on the Tools "drop-down" menu?

I just loaded windows XP disk and was trying to follow directions from a website and I am so afraid to hit the wrong button! My friend has a laptop with XP Professional installed. It was bought 2nd hand with no discs. Can he install XP Home Edition and use the Product key on the base of the laptop,or is this key only for Pro.Failing that can he use a new XP Home Upgrade to go over top of the Pro Edition? In case anyone is thinking the obvious, it isn't stolen. He just wants to wipe everything out and put on the laptop what he wants. I was thinking of using my XP Home for the job.

I had no idea what IIS was and whether I ought to have it, so I followed the link. This led to a "Sorry, no further information" message. I searched the Knowledge Base and found KB 555150, "How to add support for ASP.NET in Internet Information Services 5 and 5.1". This then pointed me to KB 308192, "How to configure Windows 2000 as a Web server".
After our Dell Inspiron E1505 recently crashed , Dell talked us thru diagnostics and finally sent us a replacement(refurbished) Toshiba hard drive to install in our computer. After installing it, and reloading all of the software for Windows XP, MS Office Small Business 2003, drivers and utilities, using the discs that came with the computer, we have a "Found New Hardware" window that pops up - Wizard trying to install a "Base System Device" everytime we turn the computer on. It asks for a disc but none of my existing ones seem to be the correct one. I've given it permission to connect to the Internet to "find" the software but nothing works. Also, since the crash/re-install, our C drive only has 12.4 GBs of total disc space, and of that, only 1.2 is still free space. My D drive has about 37 GBs of disc space. Could these two problems be connected? The computer was running so slow and we would periodically get a message "low virtual memory". This weekend, I moved as many of our documents as possible to the D drive to try and free up space. It's a little better, but why do I have such a small amount of disc space?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to set up a home network to connect my laptop (with xp pro) to my desktop (with xp home) i am using a 3com office conect router as a hub. With the fire walls on each machine switched off I can see each of the machines from each other.I can share files on the laptop with the desktop, but when I try to access the desktop from the laptop I get the following message : xxxxxxx is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Login Failure : the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.
I'm trying to share folders between two laptops set up on a home wifi workgroup. Currently, both laptops are "seeing" each other's share folders (as mapped network drives), and both laptops have full internet access I have allowed simple file sharing on the XP Pro system. I have also set the firewalls to allow access, and I'm using AVG firewall instead of Windows firewall. However, only one of the computers is allowing access to the other. The XP Pro computer can access the share folders on the XP Home computer, but not vice versa. When using the XP Home computer, I can map the shared folders on the XP Pro computer, but when I try to access them, I get denied access.

On clicking download a window advised that I needed Hebrew language to make the thing work. There was no option so I thought it must be part of the new version Ad-Aware but immediately I had accepted it, Windows File Protection said " files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognised versions" etc Insert Windows XP Home Edition SP3 CD. Since SP3 was installed as an upgrade,Would System Restore mend this problem? I made a new restoration point this month. My last backup disc was 18 long mths ago. View 7 Replies View RelatedI have xp pro on my laptop at work. I am thinking I need to do a clean install on a computer running xp home. We're on dialup and I'd rather not try downloading it again unless I have to. I haven't looked yet but I'm hoping MS put a huge .exe file on my laptop hd and it's still there. I used the MS update feature to automatically update it when sp2 came out.
where I could make a "slipstreamed bootable cd" with xp and sp2 for a computer. I was thinking this would be nice to have - my mom is not technologically inclined. The computer is a dell and I haven't thought til now to check with them and see if they made a cd available for it with sp2. If this works, though, I shouldn't need that, right? Wondering if I can do it for each machine running xp? On my way to face the blue screen on my mom's nonbooting computer. Maybe y'all will have some encouraging words for me on my arrival.
I have a laptop running XP Home which until recently was working fine. It now boots up to the normal login screen but when the user is selected a straange dialogue box appears with no discription of what is happening in it. No matter whether the Yes or No button is pressed, the system logs back off. I have tried to log on using safe mode in its various guises but this dialog still appears and does not allow me to log on. I have also created a boot floppy but the same problem occurs.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen building computers, opting for Windows XP Home saves you good money, money you can put into better computer parts (like that Thermaltake Armor Jr. case!). View 7 Replies View RelatedIt's got to the time where I need to do this and I have done it numerous times in the past but this time I am having problems.
Last week bought two new 500gb harddrives and replaced my existing 300gb slave. Formatted and partitioned this and all was okay.
Today I have removed the 300gb master and installed, formatted and partitioned the new 500gb hd with PM8.
I have set the primary partition as active and all the others are logical which is asthe old hd was partitioned.
I have been geting a disk boot failure error on trying to boot from the CDROM with the XP installation disk. Having originaly had the bios set incorrectly I have now rechecked it and ensured the boot order is set to CDROM, HD-0 and the floppy.
I have ensured that the primary hd has been detected, detection is set to to Auto and Access Mode to LBA following the Seagate instructions. I have now also disconnected the secondary drive to exclude that from the picture until I get into the primary drive.
I have also reset the jumper on the new primary to Master having disconnected the secondary drive.
Is this possible I was wondering, I have 2 sets windows xp pro. I use pro currently for 2 of my other systems. I want to downgrade to home edition ,cause pro uses more ram. Since my other system has only 128 sd ram, tends to be a little slow. I also have another comp bought from store that came with winxp home ed. instead its on a 2 restore cds ,using ghost. Is it possible for me to use the restore cds on other comp? or taking out xp home ed out of ghost files? or is this like a bad thing?. I also have the cdkey of xp home, cause it says on the cd jewel case.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a windows xp home edition pc here, and I cannot use it no more, 2
days ago it was working fine, until yesterday, i only had a blank screen,
with the cursor. I can move the cursor around but he rest is black. No hard
drive activity I have tried safe mode, but that doesn't work either, I have
service pack 2 installed since bot up months ago. When i restart I get the
LOADING WINDOWS XP LOGO which basically tells me that it is loading but
instead of staying there it's usual time of about 10 to 15 seconds it can
stay there 3 minutes or more (blue bar keeps moving) allot of hard drive
activity, after that where the sign in screen should apprear i get the cursor
and black screen with nothing and hard drive activity stops. I cna only move
ht ecursor around but nothing else.
if XP cleans up RAM better than 98 SE, I listen to online internet music constantly and I even though I restart every couple of hours, it still wants to freeze up and practically stop. I used to have a little ram reclaimer that would automatically restore unused or once used RAM, but it ended up using too much RAM to work and actually caused more problems than having it trying to restore usable RAM. I eventually removed it and that seemed to help for a while.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOk so I have a OEM version of XP home from a old dell that is being replaced by my new build. Is it possible to use the reinstall disk to put xp on the new rig? I have heard that the OS will look for tags in the mobo bios and won't install if it can't find them.If it won't work would an upgrade version of xp work. They are cheaper but need verification that you own a copy of a MS operating system, could I use the OEM xp for verification. If none of this will work is there anyother way to get around buying a full version of xp home? I don't want to spend $200 on the OS if I can avoid it.

I've set up numerous dual-boot systems so I got that covered. This is on my new build and I'm currently running Vista with RAID 0 on two Raptor 150's. I'm going to put XP on the third Rap-tor.My only concern is the 32 bit XP install will have problems with so much RAM. I know it will only use and recognize 3 gigs or so but will it have any other effects?
