Aug 27, 2006Is there a difference between buying Windows Xp Home from a store and using the reinstall cd that Dell provides with thier computers?

Jul 1, 2007This came with my Dimension 2400 desktop 3 years ago which of course I updated to SP2.I was wondering if it could be used as the operating system for another laptop without one (maybe Dell or Toshiba) for my second computer and still be recognized for all the Microsoft updates. Oct 5, 2008It's got to the time where I need to do this and I have done it numerous times in the past but this time I am having problems.
Last week bought two new 500gb harddrives and replaced my existing 300gb slave. Formatted and partitioned this and all was okay.
Today I have removed the 300gb master and installed, formatted and partitioned the new 500gb hd with PM8.
I have set the primary partition as active and all the others are logical which is asthe old hd was partitioned.
I have been geting a disk boot failure error on trying to boot from the CDROM with the XP installation disk. Having originaly had the bios set incorrectly I have now rechecked it and ensured the boot order is set to CDROM, HD-0 and the floppy.
I have ensured that the primary hd has been detected, detection is set to to Auto and Access Mode to LBA following the Seagate instructions. I have now also disconnected the secondary drive to exclude that from the picture until I get into the primary drive.
I have also reset the jumper on the new primary to Master having disconnected the secondary drive.

May 11, 2007Someone gave me a laptop that didn't work. It's a HP Pavillion ze 4900.It originally had xp home on it, so I ordered a new disk to install on it. It was saying that some files were not found. It would do nothing. It also has a password on it. I did find out the password from them. I tried doing the repair installation and it didn't work, so I formatted the partition and tried to re-install to it. The problem is that when it finished formatting and then loading the windows files, when it restarts from there I have to put in the password again and it starts all over. I have done this 2x now and still it keeps doing the same thing. I just turned it off and thought

Mar 21, 2008a while back i got tired of vista.but never uninstalled it because i never had the disk well now i have a disc that i think will work.its the xp home edition reinstallation disc, but its from a desktop computer.this leads to my first question. will it work with the laptop im wanting to put xp on? if i can get past that. i don't have the blue dell disc that contains driver, utilities, and applications from the xp computer. i have the ones from my dell laptop which is vista. will i be able to use those disc, or download the drivers and what not from the dell site once xp is on here.?

Aug 16, 2006I just reformatted a friends computer, win XP Home, Dell 4500S. Did all the normal driver installations from Dell Resource CD. Installed SP2 from a disc. And proceeded to do the rest of 'various' program installs, firewall, antivirus, antispyware and then windows updates. At some point I arrived at a state where I could not close Internet Explorer. Not via the ''X'' or File/close. I could min and max the window. I could open 'other' Internet Explorer windows and close them just fine. I finally used the task manager to close Internet Explorer. I did a google search and came across a KB884768 from 2004. Quite frankly, I didn't understand the KB. I did the steps to reproduce the problem. Was that supposed to fix the problem or do I still have a problem? And if I do still have a problem how do I fix it. Do I need to uninstall IE6 via the control panel and then reinstall same? Problem occured twice within about 3 hours. Computer seems to be working fine

Jul 2, 2009I'm trying to share folders between two laptops set up on a home wifi workgroup. Currently, both laptops are "seeing" each other's share folders (as mapped network drives), and both laptops have full internet access I have allowed simple file sharing on the XP Pro system. I have also set the firewalls to allow access, and I'm using AVG firewall instead of Windows firewall.However, only one of the computers is allowing access to the other. The XP Pro computer can access the share folders on the XP Home computer, but not vice versa. When using the XP Home computer, I can map the shared folders on the XP Pro computer, but when I try to access them, I get denied access.

Home Won't Allow Log On
Feb 11, 2006I have a laptop running XP Home which until recently was working fine. It now boots up to the normal login screen but when the user is selected a straange dialogue box appears with no discription of what is happening in it. No matter whether the Yes or No button is pressed, the system logs back off. I have tried to log on using safe mode in its various guises but this dialog still appears and does not allow me to log on. I have also created a boot floppy but the same problem occurs.

WIN Home Vs WIN 98SE & Ram?
Feb 26, 2005if XP cleans up RAM better than 98 SE, I listen to online internet music constantly and I even though I restart every couple of hours, it still wants to freeze up and practically stop. I used to have a little ram reclaimer that would automatically restore unused or once used RAM, but it ended up using too much RAM to work and actually caused more problems than having it trying to restore usable RAM. I eventually removed it and that seemed to help for a while.
