View 3 RepliesI am trying to set up a home network to connect my laptop (with xp pro) to my desktop (with xp home) i am using a 3com office conect router as a hub. With the fire walls on each machine switched off I can see each of the machines from each other.I can share files on the laptop with the desktop, but when I try to access the desktop from the laptop I get the following message : xxxxxxx is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Login Failure : the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.
Is it really true that Microsoft XP Home cant run on a Microsoft XP Pro network? My boss has just bought an expensive new Sony Vaio PC with XP Home on it and is livid that despite what the salesman told him, it now appears that his shiny new laptop wont run on the network here at work.It would need to log in to a domain not to a work group. So far we can get it to surf the web but it cant see any local files.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm having issues setting up a home network with printers and hard drives all shared on a wireless local area network.Let's get the specifics out of the way first. Three computers, two desktops and a laptop are running XP home and pro, respectively. My computer dual-boots Ubuntu and Windows XP (but for now mainly XP). Also, (if it matters) I have a WRT54G Linksys router. Now, I have every computer on the same workgroup (NATENET). Every computer has their hard drive and printer set to "shared," and these drives and printers should be accessible. However, when any of the computers goes to "My Network Places," no hard drives are viewable. Also, when you hit "view workgroup computers," you can look at all the computers connected to the network; however, when you double click any computer to open it, it claims that it is unaccessible and the computer doesn't have the permissions necessary to open up the computer's directories.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have three machines with different versions Windows (95, 98SE, and XP HE) all behind a hub, a switch, and a firewall. A few programs on my 98SE won't run on my XP. That means a trip down three floor levels (short levels of 6 -8 steps but I'm gettin' old).I ran across a piece of software that looks like it may be the answer I am concerned about downloading something from the net and later finding that it has tentacles that stretch beyond my little home network and now feed data outside my system.
Q1) Will this particular product allow my XP to use programs on my 98SE as though I were sitting at the 98SE?
Q2) Is there an increased security risk if this software were installed and
used?
My company had our IT guy set up my laptop on the company network. He webex'd into my pc remotely and worked on it for over an hour. He created new user accounts, etc. I have since left the company and now when I attmept to log on at home (cable modem) the error says i cannot access certain files (outlook, etc.) because i do not have admin rights. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a home network set up through Windows XP in my house. I have 2 linksys routers. The modem plugs into the 'wired' router which is in my room beside me and then connects upstairs to a wireless router (better broadcast signal for my sister who uses her laptop upstairs).Anyways, for some unexplained reason, a couple months ago, I noticed that when we wanted to transfer files our shared folders weren't working, and if we tried to transfer through MSN Messenger or any similar program, the speed would be extremely slow, it would take forever to even transfer a simple mp3 file. Recently, I have noticed that the speeds of files I recieve from friends also take extremely long (a 1.5MB photo takes about 5 - 10 minutes) but when I download things off of websites I don't have that problem.

The program will not do anyhting if i click setup so I can set it up to back up my computer. It also says ''updating status'' the whole time. Ihave left it at this screen for a long time and still nothing happened. I downloaded and installed the updrade for this from Maxtor's website, and it is still doign the same thing. View 14 Replies View RelatedI need to have network drive on my Windows XP computer. In order for a software to work, there needs to exist a network drive, named N, existing on my PC. Since there's not a second PC to link to, what I did was to created a directory named est on the same PC , share it out, and then, map a network drive, named N, to it. When my PC has an Ethernet cable connected to a switch, Windows XP will see that N drive (existing on the same PC). The moment I disconnect that Ethernet cable from the switch, the N drive is gone. Is there a way to have a mapped network drive on XP (as mentioned above), without the need to have a network cable connecting that PC to a switch?

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy network adapter does not appear in Device Manager, until I "Show hidden devices". And then it appears as a "Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC", whereas I actually have a D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 adapter. Furthermore, I get no icons (at all) in the Network Communications window. So if I want to change any settings of my LAN, for example, I can't, because I can't select the LAN icon or right-click on it. The LAN is working though. The current driver for the Realtek adapter which is listed is a MS driver.

View 7 Replies View Relatedwhen I browse "My Network Places", the browsing is so incredibly slow. It takes a long while when you click one icon in the “My Network Places” for that to open up and go to the next directory or when just first displaying the computers in “My Network Places”, it goes so slow.
I use Windows Workgroup on the LAN to share out internet. Everything else, other than browsing the network, works great. The internet browses nice and fast.
This morning I opened My Network Places while my pc was still loading all the programs at start-up and "My Network Places" was fast. After a few minutes it was back to normal low pace. Now I guess it is something running on my pc slowing it down. Is it maybe to do with XP Service Pack 2? Before installing SP2 the network browsing on my pc is fast, after installing SP2, it is slow. Other computers on the network without SP2 browse the network quite fast.
All the pc's on the network has XP Pro.
I'm trying to share folders between two laptops set up on a home wifi workgroup. Currently, both laptops are "seeing" each other's share folders (as mapped network drives), and both laptops have full internet access I have allowed simple file sharing on the XP Pro system. I have also set the firewalls to allow access, and I'm using AVG firewall instead of Windows firewall. However, only one of the computers is allowing access to the other. The XP Pro computer can access the share folders on the XP Home computer, but not vice versa. When using the XP Home computer, I can map the shared folders on the XP Pro computer, but when I try to access them, I get denied access.

But I would think there could be something simpler/makes more sense to do.
