I have just purchased a HP Media Center PC with XP2 and have an older HP PC with XP2. I also have a router hooked to both PSc to use the DSL internet connection. Is there someone that can help me with setting up a home network to move files from the old PC to the new PC
I'm having issues setting up a home network with printers and hard drives all shared on a wireless local area network.Let's get the specifics out of the way first. Three computers, two desktops and a laptop are running XP home and pro, respectively. My computer dual-boots Ubuntu and Windows XP (but for now mainly XP). Also, (if it matters) I have a WRT54G Linksys router. Now, I have every computer on the same workgroup (NATENET). Every computer has their hard drive and printer set to "shared," and these drives and printers should be accessible. However, when any of the computers goes to "My Network Places," no hard drives are viewable. Also, when you hit "view workgroup computers," you can look at all the computers connected to the network; however, when you double click any computer to open it, it claims that it is unaccessible and the computer doesn't have the permissions necessary to open up the computer's directories.
I am running a Windows XP SP2 with 768 Ram and a 2.66 GHz Pentium 4 CPU. I recently purchased a 20GB Maxtor OneTouch II USB hard drive and it came with Retrospect HD to back up my comptuer. The program will not do anyhting if i click setup so I can set it up to back up my computer. It also says ''updating status'' the whole time. Ihave left it at this screen for a long time and still nothing happened. I downloaded and installed the updrade for this from Maxtor's website, and it is still doign the same thing. Any suggestions on how to get this prgram working so I can back-up my computer?
If I use this to back-up my computer, and I use its restore feature, will I get problems on my computer that I currently have? (the main problem is with Windows Firewall, becuase i cannot enable it. My ocmptuer got infected a couple months ago and ever since is says it is controlled by Group Policy. For more detals on my problem click here I am using ZoneAlarm, but it will not work with my home network for sharing files and printers even though I have the IP address unblocked).
I have two computers wireless connected. What I now want to do it set up a password so hacking into the system by outsiders is as difficult as possible. I think we are talking "network key" or "Wired equivalency Privacy Key". I know nothing about setting up a wireless connection so don't want to risk disturbing the existing set up which works fine; I just want to add password access. One computer has Windows XP Home and the other Vista Home Premium. Can anyone give me some not too technical advice that will help me do this please?
Thinking of buying 2 Acer Aspire 3002LMi Sempron 2800 laptops but am unsure what would be the best router for setting up my home network in the Uk. Which is the most reliable-Belkin, Link Sys,BT or Cable & Wireless.

I'm building a replacement PC and would like to boot off my original XP Home edition HDD. Its an E-Machines OEM version of XP home, is this possible as I only have the CD that came from E-Machines with the PC? Do I need a repar CD? If so where can I get one? I really don't want to loose all my settings.
Seems I have been trying for months. getting my network setup, put in my ISP disk which sometimes has worked and some times not. I get links and places I am sent the next thig I know I can't even boot up.
I am trying to set up a home network to connect my laptop (with xp pro) to my desktop (with xp home) i am using a 3com office conect router as a hub. With the fire walls on each machine switched off I can see each of the machines from each other.I can share files on the laptop with the desktop, but when I try to access the desktop from the laptop I get the following message : xxxxxxx is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Login Failure : the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.
For getting XP Pro security settings on XP Home.Easier way to set sharing permissions on folders. You can use the GUI instaed of the more complicated command line without having to go into safe mode.1. Click on the start button2. Then run3. Type shrpubw4. Chose the folder whose permissions you want to change and give the share a name5. Click next, now you can chose custom if you want to have full options.Quick Tip: In order to set file permission in windows XP Home, the file system must already be converted to NTFS.
I am having a problem whereby my IE keeps setting the default home page to www.searchdom.com, i can see this in the log, can someone give me some guidance on what to do / delete.
How would I set the home page for all users on XP when using roaming profiles? I would like to just set the home page locally for all users on that computer.

When I open my home page (Yahoo), the font size always reverts to "larger".If I set it to " smaller" , it will revert to "larger" when I revisit my home page. I change it at ;VIEW >TEXT SIZE > SMALLER. How do I get it to stay the size I set it at ?
Why do I keep getting this message everytime I try to cut and paste a file, mp3, etc. Cannot move " " it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using that file and try again. I am the only one on this computer. I have a Linksys router with my XP firewall on. This is making me nuts!
I downloaded a pdf file that had a dot at the end e.g. page.pdf. It is zero length, shows in explorer as a system, hidden file. Can not delete or move. I can move a directory with one of these files in it but I can't do that with My Documents.Error message: Cannot move file: Cannot read from the source file or disk. Did a run cmd and tried move and del and attrib.
There used to be a way to move unmoveable files to the end when defragging in older windows programs but I have been told that you cannot do it in XP. I just had my computer worked on and now I have a sign that says alaska that comes up on booting and a mess of hotrod programs running in the background and two sections of unmoveable files. I dont know what the Alaska and Hotrod files are or what they do or if I can remove them but I have been told that they are the first unmoveable files.Should I just forget it and leave them alone or is there a simple fix?
Using Dell Inspiron media edition 16400 60GB HD 2GB ram. Issue, this drive is partitioned and running out of space on C:, there is about 12 GB on D:. Is there a way go move some apps, etc to D: and/or have a choice of writing to that drive?
this is a problem that I've been having for months now, I can't figure out what's really causing it so far.Symptoms1 - When deleting video files (.avi, .mpg) they will do one of three things.a. The file will delete fine. b. The file will delete fine, then a few seconds, will re-appear in it's original location, and will be untouchable. Cannot be deleted, opened, moved, renamed, etc.. You will get an access denied error from windows stating that the file is in use.c. The file just won't delete in the first place. See above 'untouchable 2 - Moving files gives very similar results. I won't ever get the initial error that the file is in use. The file will move, but will then be in both locations. The folder I move the file to will be normal - deletable, openable, etc.. but the one in the original location will be untouchable. Sometimes, the file will appear to move fine, but in a few seconds, will re-appear, untouchable, in the original location, same as above
By default Internet Explorer stores a user’s temporary internet files within a user profile typically located under C:Users or C:Documents and Settings. This setting can be easily be changed within Internet Explorer. Configuring Temporary Internet Files in Internet Explorer: When Internet Explorer is open, click on Tools and then select Internet Options. On the General tab, under Browsing history, click the Settings button. Click Move folder. Then select the new drive and folder you want to use and click OK to exit the property pages.
I have installed win XP pro a couple of days ago, and I thought that it would be a good idea to put windows in a separate partition. Since then I have installed a few applications on a different partition, but it is not uncommon for applications to put something in the program files folder anyway Is there a safe and easy way of having "my documents" and or "program files" on a bigger partition? Or would that defeat the whole point of a system partition?
I was moving about 450gb of music from my old external (which was almost completely out of space, 465gb) to an internal 1tb drive. I was installing/setting up a program, thinking 'no way this will affect the file transfer', when suddenly that program gave an error (can give specifics on this if needed). Immediately after, my files stopped moving. It said 'delayed write failed, data has been lost' or something like that. I looked on my external, and it was empty. At this point i was rather upset because i thought i had lost years worth of music. Since I thought i had lost all my data, i tried one of those recovery programs("diskdigger") And it couldn't even access the drive. Gave an error, then showed it as 0gb. But the drive properties still showed 300+ gb even though the only folder in it was shown as empty.
So, i did the classic windows fix-all, restarted. My computer would not even go past the motherboard boot screen for 5 minutes. At this point i was about to jump out the window, but i restarted again and it worked. I went to my external, all my folders were there, i could open all the subfolders, play the music with vlc, etc. BUT now when i try to move the folder with all my music, it says "Cannot move file: Cannot read from source file or disk".
can I stop xp from trying to install an old programme? which doesn't work and I can't delete? I have a copy of roxio media creator which doesn't work since I reset windows to an earlier point, the prog can't find a certificate and questions the system date so won't install. it won't delete either for the same reasons and every time I try to copy files it tries to install the damn thing, unsuccessfully
I was running CyberScrub the other day, which is a program that cleans out internet cache and deletes files beyond recovery. After it was done with the procedure, the computer restarted and chdisk began to run before my Windows XP booted up. After Windows was done doing chdisk, it started doing some wierd stuff I've never seen before. It was scrolling down with the same line but with the number increasing into the thousands. I thought maybe it was just doing a routine check but when I when my desktop came up I started to notice all kinds of wierd errors now. Here are just some examples: My taskbar disappeared and there's no way to conventionally fix it (Start doesn't come up when I press the windows key on my keyboard). My soundcard is undetectable. I can't copy and paste from and to my browsers. Can't find my RPC server. I can't move my desktop icons, etc.
Is it really true that Microsoft XP Home cant run on a Microsoft XP Pro network? My boss has just bought an expensive new Sony Vaio PC with XP Home on it and is livid that despite what the salesman told him, it now appears that his shiny new laptop wont run on the network here at work.It would need to log in to a domain not to a work group. So far we can get it to surf the web but it cant see any local files.
Does anyone happen to know how to successfully create a network in Windows XP Pro for a wireless laptop and for an Ethernet-hooked-up (non-wireless) computer. I'm trying to printer and file share the two together BUT I've exhausted myself in trying to make it happen. Has anyone successfully done this? Am I missing something? Perhaps hardware?I would truly appreciate any help or advice.
I cannot move any of the desktop icons.I cannot drag and drop any files, but copy and paste works.I cannot mouse click in between different programs many times and often have to use Alt-Tab to get around windows.Since this has shown up, I reformatted and installed Windows at least 10 times. I've run numerous virus and spyware programs and found the system to be clean.
I have three machines with different versions Windows (95, 98SE, and XP HE) all behind a hub, a switch, and a firewall. A few programs on my 98SE won't run on my XP. That means a trip down three floor levels (short levels of 6 -8 steps but I'm gettin' old).I ran across a piece of software that looks like it may be the answer I am concerned about downloading something from the net and later finding that it has tentacles that stretch beyond my little home network and now feed data outside my system. Q1) Will this particular product allow my XP to use programs on my 98SE as though I were sitting at the 98SE? Q2) Is there an increased security risk if this software were installed and used?
My company had our IT guy set up my laptop on the company network. He webex'd into my pc remotely and worked on it for over an hour. He created new user accounts, etc. I have since left the company and now when I attmept to log on at home (cable modem) the error says i cannot access certain files (outlook, etc.) because i do not have admin rights. Can anyone tell me how to over ride what he did to my laptop. I have windows XP prof. on my dell 8600 inspirion.
I have a home network set up through Windows XP in my house. I have 2 linksys routers. The modem plugs into the 'wired' router which is in my room beside me and then connects upstairs to a wireless router (better broadcast signal for my sister who uses her laptop upstairs).Anyways, for some unexplained reason, a couple months ago, I noticed that when we wanted to transfer files our shared folders weren't working, and if we tried to transfer through MSN Messenger or any similar program, the speed would be extremely slow, it would take forever to even transfer a simple mp3 file. Recently, I have noticed that the speeds of files I recieve from friends also take extremely long (a 1.5MB photo takes about 5 - 10 minutes) but when I download things off of websites I don't have that problem.
