Remote Viewing Over Home Network
Jun 26, 2005
I have three machines with different versions Windows (95, 98SE, and XP HE) all behind a hub, a switch, and a firewall. A few programs on my 98SE won't run on my XP. That means a trip down three floor levels (short levels of 6 -8 steps but I'm gettin' old).I ran across a piece of software that looks like it may be the answer I am concerned about downloading something from the net and later finding that it has tentacles that stretch beyond my little home network and now feed data outside my system.
Q1) Will this particular product allow my XP to use programs on my 98SE as though I were sitting at the 98SE?
Q2) Is there an increased security risk if this software were installed and
used?

I am home user with a laptop (XP Home) and a desktop (XP Pro). I currentlydo not have a home network but do have high speed web via cable modem &router for laptop access. I would like the laptop to be able to use fileson the desktop & the printer hooked up to it. The desktop is always on andalways connected to the web and is rarely in use other than myself. I'mconsidering using either a wireless network or XP Pro's remote desktop.Could someone please tell me the pros and cons of each (I know the remotedesktop would let me access it from other places as well as home)?

I am trying to set up remote access to files located on a webserver in my office. The server is Windows 2000 Small Business Server. I ahve created the appropriate shares and have created a "My Network Place" to be able to view the files in that location. Howver, I am also trying to connect my bookkeeping software (QuickBooks) to the data store that resides in that folder. When I connect locally through the network at work, it seems to work fine.

I have installed a printer in a remote location on four machines. They all run Windows XP (SP2 I think). It works perfectly on three of the machines, but will not work on the fourth for some reason. It installs on a TCP/IP port just fine, and we can view properties and everything, but it will not print at all. I have no physical access to these computers, so cannot provide very much more information about them, but I'll try my best.

A long time ago I started looking into this because my mum has a PC with XP Home on and I am running XP Pro (both fully up to date), however I seem to recall reading that you couldn't remote into a XP Home machine, only into a XP Pro machine, is this correct? Ideally I would like to try and sort this out so I can sort out any problems with my mums PC if/when they arise without having to try and talk her through it on the phone which can be quite difficult at times.

I've just installed a netgear DG834B asdl/router. I have a desktop and laptop connected wirelessly. I was wondering how and if I can use the remote desktop, or do they both have to be on a proper network. They are connected to the router but not to each other.

I am needing to work from home and want to use remote desktop to access my work computer. We are thinking about getting a new laptop which probably would come with XP Home. Do I need XP Professional on my home computer since that is what we have at work? What is the difference between Home and Professional? Also, it seems most of these computers come with Microsoft WORKS and I need the office suite. HOw compatible are Works documents? I have Works on my desktop at home now and when I try to open documents at work I am not able to. And finally, can I buy XP upgrade to upgrade from Windows ME on my current home desktop?

I have been using Remote Desktop on XP Home edition for nearly three months. I have been told that Remote Desktop on XP Home edition will expire after 90 days of use. Is this true and how do I tell how many days I have left? I use it to connect to work daily so I can't afford to wait until it expires (if indeed it does).

I want to access my home computer via the internet when I work in my office. My home computer is behind a router. I enable the virtual server function of the router. How can I do next? I had installed the VNC/Netmeeting/Dameware in my computer. I knew the cable connection's static IP address and my home computer's virtual ip address.

Is it really true that Microsoft XP Home cant run on a Microsoft XP Pro network? My boss has just bought an expensive new Sony Vaio PC with XP Home on it and is livid that despite what the salesman told him, it now appears that his shiny new laptop wont run on the network here at work.It would need to log in to a domain not to a work group. So far we can get it to surf the web but it cant see any local files.

I'm having issues setting up a home network with printers and hard drives all shared on a wireless local area network.Let's get the specifics out of the way first. Three computers, two desktops and a laptop are running XP home and pro, respectively. My computer dual-boots Ubuntu and Windows XP (but for now mainly XP). Also, (if it matters) I have a WRT54G Linksys router. Now, I have every computer on the same workgroup (NATENET). Every computer has their hard drive and printer set to "shared," and these drives and printers should be accessible. However, when any of the computers goes to "My Network Places," no hard drives are viewable. Also, when you hit "view workgroup computers," you can look at all the computers connected to the network; however, when you double click any computer to open it, it claims that it is unaccessible and the computer doesn't have the permissions necessary to open up the computer's directories.

I have a home network set up through Windows XP in my house. I have 2 linksys routers. The modem plugs into the 'wired' router which is in my room beside me and then connects upstairs to a wireless router (better broadcast signal for my sister who uses her laptop upstairs).Anyways, for some unexplained reason, a couple months ago, I noticed that when we wanted to transfer files our shared folders weren't working, and if we tried to transfer through MSN Messenger or any similar program, the speed would be extremely slow, it would take forever to even transfer a simple mp3 file. Recently, I have noticed that the speeds of files I recieve from friends also take extremely long (a 1.5MB photo takes about 5 - 10 minutes) but when I download things off of websites I don't have that problem.
