View 1 Replies View RelatedSome of our systems got their default mail client reset to Outlook Express. Most of our users use Outlook, with a few using Thunderbird. It seems that only an Administrator can reset their default mail client through Internet Options.I came across article from Microsoft that says that only an Admin can change this after an admin sets it.I find if very hard to believe that our users cannot set their own default mail client after an admin sets it once. Does anyone know how to reset this so users can select their default clients

Even when the home page is up, the other is lurking behind it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using a computer with Win98se on it, but have been given one with XP Home loaded on it,which is a new "learning curve" for me. I like Excite as my home page, but am having trouble loading it on the XP machine. I have checked these forums and Googled it, but can't seem to find an answer to my particular problem. When I attempt to load Excite, all I get is a blank page with a left and right arrow and pause button in the middle left of the page. The address is correct on the address line.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWindows XP Home is another story. As a consumer product, it suffers from two policy deficiencies. First, consumer products do not qualify for Extended Support, but instead move directly into the online support phase after Mainstream Support ends. Second, whereas business products are guaranteed Mainstream Support for two years beyond the release of the next subsequent version of a product (in this case, Windows Vista), consumer products do not get this built-in transitional period. The end result is that Windows XP Home will leave Mainstream Support and enter online support on January 1, 2007in less than a year. When that day comes, XP Home users may feel left out in the cold, because they will no longer qualify for security updates, and will not be able to purchase support from Microsoft. Finding this situation somewhat alarming, I contacted Microsoft's representation to clarify the matter. A Microsoft spokesman relayed the following to me. Originally Posted by Microsoft spokesman "For consumer products, security updates will be available through the end of the mainstream phase. For Windows XP Home Edition, there will be no security updates after 12/31/06." Regarding paid support for problems unrelated to security patches, I was told that "Users who want to continue to receive support after the Microsoft assisted and paid support offerings have ended may visit the Retired Product Support Options Web site." I urge Microsoft to reconsider this stance. There should be considerably more overlap in support for their consumer OS. While five years of support for XP Home may have seemed reasonable when it was expected that there would be little more than three years between major OS updates, the time it has taken to bake Windows Vista has thrown this out entirely. If Vista launches in October, it would give users a mere two months to move to the OS, or risk being unsupported. Yikes makes me glad that I only use for my family and me XP Pro (and actually I don't really like Microsoft due to the fact that they have a monopoly and are quite greedy so the vast majority of my computing tasks are done on a mac running MacOS X 10.4.6) which should receive a much longer period of support due to it being used for businesses (however it still has great gaming support)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having issues setting up a home network with printers and hard drives all shared on a wireless local area network.Let's get the specifics out of the way first. Three computers, two desktops and a laptop are running XP home and pro, respectively. My computer dual-boots Ubuntu and Windows XP (but for now mainly XP). Also, (if it matters) I have a WRT54G Linksys router. Now, I have every computer on the same workgroup (NATENET). Every computer has their hard drive and printer set to "shared," and these drives and printers should be accessible. However, when any of the computers goes to "My Network Places," no hard drives are viewable. Also, when you hit "view workgroup computers," you can look at all the computers connected to the network; however, when you double click any computer to open it, it claims that it is unaccessible and the computer doesn't have the permissions necessary to open up the computer's directories.

View 4 Replies View RelatedFirst off I wish to let anyone who helps know that I do this for a living and this is for a customer. If you sucessfully answer this though I promise to donate to the forums really.I have a customer running Windows XP Home hooked up to a DSL line. Only 1 user can get access the internet. In that account its fine. In all other accounts I can't do anything get online. Ping a a URL address etc.I checked and all acounts are set up as administrators. I ran scans with Ad-Aware and SpyBot SD. While I did clean out a lot of junk (including Virtual Bouncer and Spyware Stormer) I still can't get online with any other accounts. Also I can't get online if I boot into safe mood with networking as admin. I know this is either a REALLY simple setting some where or a horribly complex problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a family PC running XP Home with six user accounts. All are administrator accounts and I prefer to keep them that way. The PC is firewalled and has AV and anti-spyware SW and I try to educate my family in safe computing practices.
My problem is that the 8, 11, and 15 y-o boys keep screwing up each others accounts (on purpose) by changing each other's passwords, or changing them to limited accounts. My 11 y-o for example, thinks his 8 y-o brother should not be allowed to install "Sponge Bob Whatever"; so he changes his account to limited. (Somehow he thinks it is ok though to install Limewire or Bearshare even after I tell him not to).Is there a way in XP Home to give users "Power User" privileges which will allow them to do most everything administrators can do, but not be able to access other user accounts?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have had weatherbug for years and thought it was a good program.Today weather bug wanted to me to click on an 'update'. Zone alarm asked and I accepted. When I did all Weather bug added them selves to my address bar (at the top along with back, stop, refresh, home, etc.putting 2 icons that were not there before, their icon along with another showing what the weather was. Also weatherbug put in a 'search bar'like yahoo has.I certainly did not ask for this.My links bar disappeared. The links that were showing on the bar below the address were now listed on the right side as links, which I had to click on to get the list of what was originally showing.I am using XP.I could not get the link bar back, I didn't know how, so I used the restore point from yesterday. Now my home page looks like it should.Actually my question is, I am really irritated with Weatherbug, I don;t like that they just took over my home page and changed it.I am thinking
of deleting the program and using another weather program. What weather program would you suggest in place of Weather bug?
Last week, my home page was hijacked by spyware (I think), it was actually 2 pages in length, the bottom of first page was a note "Removal instructions". I have windows XP SP2.I was able to go into the registry, with the help of another forum, and delete the offending file. Now my home page is white with my general icons, (I used to have the pretty beach picture of windows XP). I can't seem to restore the picture.I have also discovered the same file in "my computer" in system 32. When I press delete the icon disappears for about 3 seconds and then returns. The files name is "Twain Tech" and in system 32 as "Twunk 16" and "Twunk 32"
