Setting Permissions For File Sharing

Jul 28, 2005

I want to share a folder on the network, giving just certain users the ability to read and write its files, but not other users. That's easy in Windows 2000, I right-click on the folder and choose Properties. On the Sharing tab I click the "Permissions" button and then choose the users who will be allowed to access its files. But in Windows XP the Sharing tab has no "Permissions" button.

Changing File Permissions In Home

Sep 10, 2005

I recently had a Windows XP HE crash that caused me to reinstall the application. Not thinking, I created a new domain name and user name for myself during the setup.

When I tried restoring my Microsoft Outlook 2003 files to my machine from a Novastor 7 backup, the files
restored, but I only get "Access Denied" messages when I try to access them in any way. I'm assuming, because of the the old permissions. How I can regain access to them?

Home Advanced File Permissions

Aug 12, 2002

How to access *Advance file Permissions* on NTFS file systems for XP Home simply by booting into *Safe Mode*, rt-clicking any file or folder, and navigating to the *Security tab*. This gives the user the ability to allow or deny read, write, execute, read & write, display contents, full-control, iheritance, and take ownership permissions, with many more options available to apply to different users and groups stored on the computer.Well, you don't have to do this in *Safe Mode* (XP Home).
Go to your command prompt - Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt. Now type "cacls" in the window (without the quotes). This gives you the ability to add, remove or modify file permissions on files and folders through the command prompt. Type "cacls /?" for help on different options and variables. You do not need to be in safe mode to use this so it makes it a little quicker than using the safe mode security tab GUI.Remember - this only applies to NTFS.WHY the system crashed ?(ie. faulty hardware/software/conflicts, etc)

Permissions And Access Denied-Home

Sep 8, 2008

There are 4 accounts on the computer, all administrators. Of the 4, only one account has access to everything. The other 3 accounts all have Access Denied pop-ups when trying to open any file on the C: drive.

I tried rebooting in safe mode and logging in as administrator to see what the security settings where. After looking there I found out that all 4 accounts have full rights to all folders, sub folders, and files on the C: drive.

How To Reset All File Sharing Permissions

Dec 2, 2006

I am running WINXP Pro after having to do a clean install (Network card failed and corrupted something?) I have a bunch of files that I could not access, figured out I had to take permission of them as individual files (I could see in the folders, just not the open the files) I've had to keep doing this every time I move a hard drive to another PC. My question is how do I reset all the file sharing permissions so that anybody on any network/pc can access the files?

NTFS File Permissions - Access

Mar 8, 2005

I was reallocating them earlier... and something went terribly terribly wrong. (gremlins I say) I try to log into my user account, but it says it does not have access to any of the files (like the desktop, c:/docs and settings/username/desktop)So is there a way to fix this, preferrably an app that will be able to rewrite the file permissions tables on a large scale?

Changing File Sharing Permissions - Not Folders - Access Denied

Sep 19, 2009

I am trying to move files from my old XP computer (to be called OLD from now on) to my new Vista computer (to be called NEW) over my network. In some folders, there are some files that don't have the correct permissions for me to move them. I get this message on NEW when I try to copy them over: Destination Folder Access Denied You need permission to perform this action

The folder that these files are in on OLD has the correct permissions set, but for some reason some, not all, of the files within it have not inherited the correct permissions level. I can't figure out how to change the permissions level of these individual files. When I right-click on the problematic files in OLD, I do not see a Security tab.

Setting File Association In Context Menu / File Types

Jun 27, 2005

Running xp home sp2. I cannot get it to recognize the program Quick Par for par2 files. When I right click a par2 & select "open with", it defaults to the wrong program, and the correct one (Quick Par) is not listed. When I try using the browse option from this point, it ignores my selection of Quick Par's .exe. When I go to WE/tools/folder options file types, I get the same dialogues with the same result. When I try to delete the par2 association from here, hoping to reset it the file to the right priogram, the delete button is dimmed. If I open Quick par & select the file in question, it performs normally, but I want the much more convenient right click context menu option. How can I associate these files with Quick Par, which the pc seems determined to ignore?

Setting Up A Home Network On XP

May 14, 2008

I'm having issues setting up a home network with printers and hard drives all shared on a wireless local area network.Let's get the specifics out of the way first. Three computers, two desktops and a laptop are running XP home and pro, respectively. My computer dual-boots Ubuntu and Windows XP (but for now mainly XP). Also, (if it matters) I have a WRT54G Linksys router. Now, I have every computer on the same workgroup (NATENET). Every computer has their hard drive and printer set to "shared," and these drives and printers should be accessible. However, when any of the computers goes to "My Network Places," no hard drives are viewable. Also, when you hit "view workgroup computers," you can look at all the computers connected to the network; however, when you double click any computer to open it, it claims that it is unaccessible and the computer doesn't have the permissions necessary to open up the computer's directories.

Where To Find Setting For Documents And Setting

Oct 5, 2008

I just finished a complete reinstall of Windows XP. Before the re-installation, I partitioned the hard drive. I want the basic Windows XP system files and drivers on my "C" drive and then I want to accumulate data files (word processing, spreadsheets, photos, music files, etc.) on the new partition which in this case has been labeled the "G" drive. The difficulty I am having is getting getting the "Documents and Settings" to move over to the "G" drive. So that when I want to load photographs from my camera to the computer it goes for C:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Instead I would like it to go to G:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Using Windows Explorer I changed the file name of "My Documents" to 'Windows XP old path My Documents" and then I was going to set up a new path to the "G" drive through Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Managment>Disk Management.

However I noticed that when I clicked on Start in the bottom left hand corner and it puts up that little window that "My Documents" which was listed now had the new title 'Windows XP old path My Documents' which I believe means I haven't gotten to the proper place to change the main configuration for Documents and Settings. Long way of saying how do I change the basic configuration for where Document and Settings are stored to a new location.

Cant Delete A File In Home

Also, I tried once to preview it, and I got the "no preview available" sign. I'm not sure how or when this file got there, but I have a feeling its some sort of virus. I ran a virus scan and a spyware scan, but they didn't remove the file. How can I get rid of it?
