How To Setting Default Email Program

May 10, 2005

I have a problem with setting OE6 as my default email program in IE after I installed Office 97. Since I really wanted to use OE6, I uninstalled Outlook. Now my OE6 works okay with my dial-up internet access. No problems with sending and receiving emails, but I cannot set it to be the default email handler using the Tool->Options popup window. And I also found that in IE, Tools-> Internet Options popup -> Programs tab, there is no choices for the Email field. This problem has caused me to be unable to click on email addresses of people on the webpages and other problems with 3rd party softwares.

Added Directory List Print - Change Default Left Click In Explorer?

Aug 20, 2006

I just added a "Directory List Print" to my right click options and somehow the default choice (highlighted at the top of the list) changed from "open" to "search".

Apparently the default selection governs what happens when you left click. I want to restore "open" as the default choice, but can't figure out how. Does it require a reg edit or a utility program or what? TIA

Some of our systems got their default mail client reset to Outlook Express. Most of our users use Outlook, with a few using Thunderbird. It seems that only an Administrator can reset their default mail client through Internet Options.I came across article from Microsoft that says that only an Admin can change this after an admin sets it.I find if very hard to believe that our users cannot set their own default mail client after an admin sets it once. Does anyone know how to reset this so users can select their default clients

Setting The Default Blue Background Color In Ntoskrnl.exe, Winlogon.exe?

Jan 22, 2008

I was wondering if anyone knew where the default light blue color background (approx rgb 80 110 200) that appears just before the welcome screen (not classic logon) when you boot XP or switch users is set. I'd like to change it so that it matches my customized desktop/welcome screen.

I've changed the following registry keys but no luck:
HKEY_USERS.DEFAULTControl PanelColorsBackground
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrentVersionWinlogonBac kground
HKEY_USERS.DefaultControl PanelDesktopWallpaper

It might be the same color as the one that appears when you run chkdsk and stuff like that at boot time, so I was thinking the color is set in ntoskrnl.exe?

Blue Screen: Registry File Failure; Can't Copy Corrupted File To Tmp Directory

May 29, 2006

I'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in:

http://attachments.techguy.org/attac...chmentid=62075, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed,

I'm starting up Outlook 2003 for the first time on my son's computer we put a new hard drive into, the old HD is hooked up through USB to an external HD case. When Outlook starts it asks for a location of the .pst file and I direct it to the external HD (F drive) thinking it will automatically import the old 85 meg pst file so we can save all the old emails, contacts etc. Unfortunately what it did was create a new where I directed it deleting the old .pst file completely, AARRGGHH, My question is, is there any way to recover all the lost files? I checked the recycle bin, no luck and am currently doing a search of the (external) F drive looking for the file.

Setting File Association In Context Menu / File Types

Jun 27, 2005

Running xp home sp2. I cannot get it to recognize the program Quick Par for par2 files. When I right click a par2 & select "open with", it defaults to the wrong program, and the correct one (Quick Par) is not listed. When I try using the browse option from this point, it ignores my selection of Quick Par's .exe. When I go to WE/tools/folder options file types, I get the same dialogues with the same result. When I try to delete the par2 association from here, hoping to reset it the file to the right priogram, the delete button is dimmed. If I open Quick par & select the file in question, it performs normally, but I want the much more convenient right click context menu option. How can I associate these files with Quick Par, which the pc seems determined to ignore?

File Or Directory Is Corrupted And Unreadable?!?

May 1, 2008

I recently reinstalled Windows XP Home w/SP2 on a system and everything worked well. I also installed a Seagate 500 GB HDD as a slave drive. I had no problems assigning a drive letter (D:) and mapping it as a network drive. Then yesterday, a Windows error message popped up saying there was "Delayed Write Failure" or something similar. It was at that point the the slave drive became inaccessible. I can still see the drive in My Computer but that is all. I went into disk management and click on properties, it says the file system is "RAW". I have no idea what that means.

The drive is still assigning a drive letter (d:) and it says is it is healthy (active). However, when I try exploring the drive it says "D: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable"." I then tried using CHKDSK to check the drive for errors in the DOS prompt. But again, nothing happened. I used Seagate Diagnostic tools to scan the drive for errors. There is nothing physically wrong with the drive as it passed all the tests except for the file structure test.

Batch File Doesn't Run In Particular Directory

Sep 1, 2008

I use a batch files for various maintenance stuff.Get this: When the batch file (.bat or .cmd), is in ONE PARTICULAR DIRECTORY, the defrag command in it echos endlessly, but doesn't execute. Even if the batch file contains only just the one line.If the batch file is in any other directory, it works fine. Of course, I keep all my batch files in the same directory ("C:Program FilesBruce"), and I can find nothing anywhere in Windows that should cause this directory to be any different than any other. Addition a few minutes later: Now the simple one-line batch file will sometimes work, sometimes not work, when in other directories. This is weird.
