I have a problem with setting OE6 as my default email program in IE after I installed Office 97. Since I really wanted to use OE6, I uninstalled Outlook. Now my OE6 works okay with my dial-up internet access. No problems with sending and receiving emails, but I cannot set it to be the default email handler using the Tool->Options popup window. And I also found that in IE, Tools-> Internet Options popup -> Programs tab, there is no choices for the Email field. This problem has caused me to be unable to click on email addresses of people on the webpages and other problems with 3rd party softwares.
I want to set up another email account for my mother in law on my wife's computer. I have 8 addresses so that is not an issue. I am just wondering if I should set up an additional profile on her Windows XP Home computer or if there is someway to use the same outlook express? I want it to be a clean and easy as possible.
When I send an email I can't change the font size. I have tried going to tools and changing the size and I have tried to change it in the format box of the send screen. The number in the font size box will change to what I have set it to, but when I start to type in a message, when I hit the first letter the font size goes back to 12.
I use Outlook Express for e mail. Every now & then when I check e mail I get a message telling me that Outlook Express is not my e mail default, and do I want to make it my default. I check the box to do that, and its ok for awhile, maybe 2 weeks, then it does it again. Apparently something in the system keeps switching it. This has been happening intermittently since I bought my present computer about a year ago.
As an fyi ... I'm on Windows XP and email through MS Office Outlook. My computer was working fine until we suffered 2 power surges within minutes of each other today. The tv, stereo, phone & fax are fine. My computer powers on and the first error message appears: winlogon.exe - unable to locate component. This application has failed to start because sfc_os.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. Next, I try to go into 1 of 3 email accounts. First error message here: Unable to open your default email folders.
I am having a problem whereby my IE keeps setting the default home page to www.searchdom.com, i can see this in the log, can someone give me some guidance on what to do / delete.
Does anybody knows how or where to setup a default user environment variable ?We want to create this variable for each user that logon in to the same pc?

Anyone know how to set a default for viewing files and folders . . . , i.e., I'd like to set as a default, the only useful file/folder view XP offers, which is "details", such that everytime I open any file/folder from any storage,I see the file/folder details without having to take the extra 10 minutes to adjust it by hand.
Since I installed XP I've only had my profile and it's always taken me straight into my desktop without logging in. However now it's asking for a password and it doesn't seem to be the one I'd use for it. Is there a default password because I don't recall actually setting one up for it :s Or do I have to reinstall XP?
Some of our systems got their default mail client reset to Outlook Express. Most of our users use Outlook, with a few using Thunderbird. It seems that only an Administrator can reset their default mail client through Internet Options.I came across article from Microsoft that says that only an Admin can change this after an admin sets it.I find if very hard to believe that our users cannot set their own default mail client after an admin sets it once. Does anyone know how to reset this so users can select their default clients
I was wondering if anyone knew where the default light blue color background (approx rgb 80 110 200) that appears just before the welcome screen (not classic logon) when you boot XP or switch users is set. I'd like to change it so that it matches my customized desktop/welcome screen.
I've changed the following registry keys but no luck: HKEY_USERS.DEFAULTControl PanelColorsBackground HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrentVersionWinlogonBac kground HKEY_USERS.DefaultControl PanelDesktopWallpaper
It might be the same color as the one that appears when you run chkdsk and stuff like that at boot time, so I was thinking the color is set in ntoskrnl.exe?
I posted the following awhile ago, and got some good results for the problem I was having drilling down through directories.I have an Emachine with a 330 Celeron D, 1gb ddr sdram (installed thinking it would help), 80gb hard drive, NAV, Spysweeper, XP Home edition. I am using Outlook 2003.I still have the problem of my email program being really slow. Not server access, but the program, and I think really the computer itself. It seems like it is always thinking, catching up. When in my inbox (or any folder) and I am moving from one email to the next, initially I might be able to move, but then it freezes for about 10 - 25 seconds until I can move again. It might allow me to move for awhile, but it will happen again. I waste so much time in a day waiting while moving through emails.I don't really see this behavior in other areas of the computer. Any ideas?
in my "program files" dir... i have a folder name "putty" in this folder is :putty.exe pscp.exe psftp.exe plink.exe i would like to run these programs from the command line... as thats the only way a few of them will run since they have no gui. anyways.. i know where to set the variable My Compuer > Properties > advanced > environment variables. i named it putty and thought it should be set to something like:c:Program Filesputty i think Im missin something... its not workin out so far.
changing some icons last night and managed to mess up somewhere. When i went to folder options to try and change the icon for drives it somehow reset the setting for opening drives to find. I changed it to open with windows explorer for now so that i can open things but this doesnt help as they all open in new windows. Does anyone know how to reset this action to default? I checked on my other comp and there doesnt appear to normally be a default option it just opens.
I use several different programs simultaneously, some of which web-based and open within Internet Explorer. So that I can work more efficiently, I want some programs to open in the first screen and some in the second. Is there a utility that exists that looks at the title of the window being opened, and opens it in the user-defined screen? So, if I want outlook to open in the second screen, the program would see "Microsoft Office Outlook" in the window title, and then send it to the second screen when I open Outlook?
Where is Set Program access and defults located?I did a system restore 3 times, on one occasion I named the computor ***HP. I noticed this name appearing in the virus scan in "documënts and settings" and deleted it.
I just replaced a power supply on a Windows XP computer and when it boots up, the os loads just fine, the startup programs begin to load and during this the display settings automatically change from 800x600 32-bit color to 640x480 8-bit color. It has a GeForce 440 MX card and all the drivers and such are working fine. I've tried everything fix it, but am having a less than fun time. Any suggestions would be great.
I recently installed Nero software for burning DVD's and aparently I gave the software permission to open all icons under Nero instead of where they opened from before. When I go to my icon folder to choose an icon, instead of seeing all of the icons I have placed, there, all I see is about 100 Nero icons.Could uninstall Nero and I suppose that would correct the problem.
If a file type is opened by a program by default, how do I make it so the file type isn't opened by anything on default and I have to pick which program opens the file every time? Is this possible?
I have accidentally changed the program a file opens with. It was a macro program and I went to delete it and it changed all of my files related to it, and now i can't open them. I downloaded it again but it still opened with the same program. How can i get it to open again?
I try to set a default prog to open a file, so i set it in properties... but when i click ok, the setting i picked does not save! what could be causing this?
I have gone through the above thread. I have a specific requirement to count the files in a folder and set it's count value to a variable in the batch script. I will then use this value later in the program. e.g. for /f "delims=" %a in ('dir /a-D /B /s "C:codedepotinstallData File DistribProductName" |find /c /v ""') do Set tempVar=%a I am having trouble with the space in the path. I tried using escape with slash '' but didn't help. Can anyone correct my above command and get the count in the tempVar?
I am running Windows XP Home.I recently installed MS Outlook and now it has become my default mail program. When I click on a link in a website to send mail Outlook opens instead of my web based email server. I was told that the adjustment has to be made in the registry and I have no clue as to how to to that.
I just got a new computer with WinXPHome. All works OK except I can not receive my email into OE 6, all email stays with AT&T's Webmail, which I do not want to use. My old Win98 computer has no problems with getting my email. The settings on both computers are the same. I have disabled NAV email scanning. I have no idea what to do. I like OE, and want to continue using it.
I'm using Win XP and, using the built in Zip feature, have zipped up 14 files that include one .exe file and one .bas file. When I try to Extract All files it extracts all except these two files. It says that the files have been blocked to protect the computer, then I can click on a link to find out how to unblock the files but the instructions to do so don't make sense. The instructions tell you to save the file, then right click/properties/unblock, but I can't see how you can save a file if it hasn't been unzipped. How can I stop the .exe and .bas files from being blocked
In an XP-Home, one user system, what shoul be the defautl values found in the following registry entry: HKU.DEFAULTSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Folders ??To make a long story short, there are entries pointing to a non existing user's folder (eg: C:Documents and SettingsTEMP....) and I want to get rid of this TEMP user and folder. This is the only section of the registry where this folder is referenced.
