Default Program Wont Unzip .exe Files / Files Blocked To Protect System?
Jul 25, 2005
I'm using Win XP and, using the built in Zip feature, have zipped up 14 files that include one .exe file and one .bas file. When I try to Extract All files it extracts all except these two files. It says that the files have been blocked to protect the computer, then I can click on a link to find out how to unblock the files but the instructions to do so don't make sense. The instructions tell you to save the file, then right click/properties/unblock, but I can't see how you can save a file if it hasn't been unzipped. How can I stop the .exe and .bas files from being blocked
I stored family pictures on Windows 95 Zip disks and now use HP Pavilion dv 8380 Notebook PC with XP. I have installed an Iomega Zip 250 external USB port drive to open the old Zip discs and get a message that I need a Windows 95 program to do this. I don't want to mess up my current operating system, but want to move these files to my XP system.
If a file type is opened by a program by default, how do I make it so the file type isn't opened by anything on default and I have to pick which program opens the file every time? Is this possible?
Issue with having no icons and toolbar on my desktop. While I'm sorting that one out, how I can use the task manager to unzip a zip file I've downloaded?
I run Firefox 3.0.3 under Windows XP SP2 Home. I have downloaded, a new batch of .jpg files from a trustworthy site that I have been using without any problem for a couple of years. With the latest batch of files I find that whenever I try to open any one with PaintShop Pro, I get an Open File - Security Warning asking me if I really want to open it from an unknown publisher.
If I check the file's properties, I find it is blocked. I can unblock each file individually, either by changing the property or by checking an option on the Security Warning.
I can see no reason for this happening suddenly. I have found various possible solutions proposed (but for slightly different environments or file-types), but they do not work for me. Is there any really proven solution for either preventing the blocking in the first place or removing the block en block?
I am not sure if MS or IE or McAfee is doing this. I have been downloading a lot of files for my PSP program. I have notices in properties it is saying the file is blocked and I can unblock by clicking etc.
I don't know where this block is coming from or what limitations it is posing. I want to unblock all of them at one time.
Is there a way I can password-protect my files in My Documents so that each time I open the folder, it prompts me with a password? If not, are there any suggestions?
ok, after I unzip the program I click on the setup.exe and get this message: "C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for runnung MS-DOS and Mircosoft Windows application. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." I had this program before so I know it can be run on xp.
I recently started using DVD Decrypter to rip some of my DVD's and then convert them to play on my Sony Playstation Portable (using PSP video 9) And it's working great. Now that I know how to do this, (rip tracks off of DVD'S) I was just wondering if anyone can tell me what the BEST program is, or what people use, to use those .vob files and turn them into .AVI files or .MPEG files, so that I can carry them with me on my laptop.
I have a problem that is more irritating than serious. Every time Windows XP starts a window opens displaying the contents of the folder Program Files. It doesn't take more than a second or two to close the window but I find it frustrating that I am unable to prevent it from happening. I suspect that the answer lies somewhere in the Register but I have no idea where.
Anyone know how to set a default for viewing files and folders . . . , i.e., I'd like to set as a default, the only useful file/folder view XP offers, which is "details", such that everytime I open any file/folder from any storage,I see the file/folder details without having to take the extra 10 minutes to adjust it by hand.
I'm having trouble with the 'Show hidden files and folders' setting in the folder options. No matter how many times I try to set the computer to display hidden files and folders, the computer completely ignores it and resets it to 'Do not show hidden files and folders'. The account I am using while trying to change the setting is a admin account though not the default admin account. I have tried to change the setting in the default admin account and the same thing happens. I'm running XP Pro with SP2. As far as I can tell this problem started after I uninstalled a browser hijack program that got installed without my consent though I am not positive that this problem did not start before the browser hijacker problem occurred. I'm assuming the registry is corrupted and short of reinstalling windows I don't know how to fix the problem.
I now have W XP. When I click on folders I get icons or thumbnails. I want to establish "LIST" as the default way to view files. When I click on List, it works the one time but then future clicks brings me back to the thumbnails.
Everytimes I open any files, I find that all blue word including system & all dll files are blue in color. I try to restore to previous but is still the same. Secondly my DVD-rw sometimes can read & sometimes just read but nothing come out.
It is frustrating having every program automatically install to program files, including minor things like audio attachment. I know I'll end up with tons and tons of folders in program files. Beyond that, I can't access program files from the other computers on the network. Is there a good way to reorganize/move files to my C drive in a way that would be efficient and wouldn't require reinstalling every single program in a different place?
Um.. I think this could go here. Well i just partitioned my hard drive and i seperated it by music, programs, etc. What im trying to do is get all my programs to use the seperate partition (E) instead of C:. I just wanted to know how to do this.
I have a VirusProtectPro alert flashing next to date/time on my desktop. All efforts to remove this have failed. Is this a valid antivirus program? How do I remove it as it keeps interfering wiwth my other desktop functions.
I am trying to delete the programs on C:Program Files that I dont need such as MSN Gaming Zone, Outlook Express, Netmeeting etc.But it wont let me it comes up with this error:Error Deleting File or FolderCannot delete Windows: It is being used by another person or program.Close any programs that might be using the file and try again. But there are not any programs open to my knowledge that use the programs I am trying to delete.
I picked up some crappy malware called ?Windows Police? last night while I was surfing for player info for my fantasy football league. I immediately ran a scan using AVG, but in my impatience and worry over getting this infection I googled for information and found instructions at this web site. So I mistakenly tried to follow them. Unfortunately I must have made an error in there somewhere because now I?m having problems opening program files. AVG scrubbed the virus but now I cannot open program files. Either the program cannot be found or I get the ?Open With? pop up menu. I?ve tried to run the WMI diagnostic but can?t get that to work either. Is this fixable?
I have set my default browser as FireFox. So the html files show the Firefox symbol. They should automatically open in Firefox. But this does not happen. When I click on the file nothing used to happen.Suddenly now it opens with IE.When I right click and click open with FireFox nothing happens.
I have found 2 damaged files-C:WINDOWSsystem32luctl.dll and C:WINDOWSCPBRKPIE.OCX .I tried to change this screen saver my daughter installed but i keep getting program not responding.I could not find screen saver in add or remove programs and am afraid i messed something up trying to change the screen saver.
I have old backup of favorites (bunch of *.lnk files) from Internet Explorer that i had on cd and forgot about it. Then i formated my pc and had to start over collecting them. Now after year i find out my old favs was on backup cd and i want to merge my old favorites with my current ones, the problem is there is about 100 links in old folder and about 200 links in current folder and many of them lead to same sites, i dont wanna have duplicates and i dont wanna sort them manually.
Is there prog that can copy file from one folder to another, checking if each file from source folder is not present in destination folder (and subfolders) under different name (by checking size or crc or md5 whatever)?
Or prog that can check which of files from source folder (without subfolders) are same as files in destination folder (without subfolders) and mark them to delete or move or smooth
I recently figured out that some kind of virus is attached to my harddrive that is not picked up by any detection program. The files end in .exe and when using task manager, I delete the file and it generates a new file name with the same extention repeatedly. The CPU usage stays at 100% making it impossible for me to navigate the internet and play on line games. I did a file search, deleted the known files and rechecked task manager. They were still there. If I sit and delete them each time I turn on my computer it takes me considerable amount of time and even then I may not get them all. I don't know what else to try to get my computer running better without a total reboot
I run a any virus program on my computer and they tell me there are certain files that cannot be opened, I'm running windows xp profesional some of the files that it can't open
For some reason i cannot delete any file or folder within C:Program Files. I get the error message: access denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected.I have XP home edition with a 3 partitioned hard drive. C:for Operating system, E:for software install and F: for data. The only software installed on C: partition is Kaspersky Anti-virus.I have booted up in safe mode to delete files but i do not want to do this all the time. I have also tried changing folder permissions and apparently i am logged with admin rights.
