I now have W XP. When I click on folders I get icons or thumbnails. I want to establish "LIST" as the default way to view files. When I click on List, it works the one time but then future clicks brings me back to the thumbnails.
View 14 RepliesAnd of course you can go in and change it to sort by "Type" or view as "Icons" or "Thumbnails" but as so as you close it it reverts, and the next time you open it it will be back to "List" view, arranged by "Name."Having it sorted by name is acceptable, so as i said it never really bothered me, but now one of my computers is sorting by "Modified" which is just not working for me.So basically I'm trying to find out if there is a way to change the default folder/file view in these basic Open, Save, Save As, etc dialog box's.

Apparently the default selection governs what happens when you left click. I want to restore "open" as the default choice, but can't figure out how. Does it require a reg edit or a utility program or what? TIA
On my Dell 8250, I added a 1800 Flat Panel display and when I went to load the drivers, I found the Properties button greyed out. I went to device manager and no monitor was listed not even the Default Monitor. I've looked all over and can't find a clue on how to ungrey the Properties button.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble with the 'Show hidden files and folders' setting in the folder options. No matter how many times I try to set the computer to display hidden files and folders, the computer completely ignores it and resets it to 'Do not show hidden files and folders'. The account I am using while trying to change the setting is a admin account though not the default admin account. I have tried to change the setting in the default admin account and the same thing happens. I'm running XP Pro with SP2. As far as I can tell this problem started after I uninstalled a browser hijack program that got installed without my consent though I am not positive that this problem did not start before the browser hijacker problem occurred. I'm assuming the registry is corrupted and short of reinstalling windows I don't know how to fix the problem.

View 3 Replies View Relatedseems like with every new update done to Windows XP Home (SP2 + all current updates), I develop a new little annoyance.A few updates back, I noticed that when I change file associations to a specific program opening up my .jpgs, .tifs, and .gifs, from the default (Windows Picture & Fax Viewer), the newly-associated file does open the file, but the icons for those files remains as the default Windows Picture & Fax Viewer.(I suspect at the bottom of many of problems MAY be the installation of my Lexmark printer -- but then, it's a convenient scapegoat for everything!

When I was able to get back online, there are all sorts of problems with my McAfee (i.e. I all of a sudden have no virus protection and I can't reinstall it). Also, when I go to add/remove programs, there is nothing there. View 18 Replies View RelatedA folder full of PSD files. I have the folder on thumbnail view so I can easily find a look I wan't and choose it instead of opening up each one. The problem is that the folder is not generating a preview of the file anymore but instead shows the PSD icon. I just got a new computer and it is since then that this has stared, as on my old computer the previews showed up fine. Is this a setting I need to change somewhere?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled XP Pro with SP1 on my computer today. Everything is working well except when my desktop loads the actual display is about an inch to the right on the screen. If I go into properties and change/apply the screen resolution from 800 x 600 then back to 1024 x 768 it realigns and all is well. I would just prefer to not have to do that each time I restart windows.

Everything is working fine ACCEPT, every time I do a cold restart of my computer the Display setting return to 'Windows XP Style'. I keep setting it to 'Windows Classic Style' with a green background and green title bar is individual windows. In addition, I have the sound set to 'No Sound' so all the beep and bells are shut off, that also reset itself to the default of endless annoying beep and whistles. I tried creating my own display Theme called 'Green-1'. When the computer does a power-up Start, the Themes display still says 'Green-1' but the display has been reset to 'Win XP Style'. However, the Start Menu and the background color remain as I set them (classic and green respectively).A warm power-on Restart some will maintain the setting and sometimes will not.

They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.
windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago
In Windows XP, is there any way to remove the list of "My Pictures" from the wallpaper (background) list in Display Properties? Every picture I've saved from the Internet and every picture I've saved from my digital camera appears in the list of background pictures that can be chosen from the "Desktop" tab in Display Properties. MOST of these pictures would be inappropriate as desktop wallpaper so I'd rather not have them as choices in the list (menu). In addition, there are hundreds of them! I don't want to delete them from "My Pictures" however.
