Can't Change Default Monitor In Display Properties
Aug 18, 2005
On my Dell 8250, I added a 1800 Flat Panel display and when I went to load the drivers, I found the Properties button greyed out. I went to device manager and no monitor was listed not even the Default Monitor. I've looked all over and can't find a clue on how to ungrey the Properties button.

My XP is currently defaulted on it's display settings 640v by 480 pixels and will not allow me to change it. In fact, there is nothing to change it to. I dont know what file I must of deleted, but is there anyway I can download the driver or something to make it so that it can be set on opitions that are higher?
I use a Dell LCD Monitor and every time I have tried to format and reinstall XP on my hard drive I go to my Monitor section and the Monitor Properties are shaded out thus making me stuck with the default crap that XP put on for my comp. I have the drivers I need for my monitor but the frackin thing wont let me use them.
I reinstalled XP Pro with SP1 on my computer today. Everything is working well except when my desktop loads the actual display is about an inch to the right on the screen. If I go into properties and change/apply the screen resolution from 800 x 600 then back to 1024 x 768 it realigns and all is well. I would just prefer to not have to do that each time I restart windows.
Is there NO ONE who knows how to fix this: I'd like to be able to just click on a scheduled task and have it run. However the default is set to show the properties of the task. (If I just click on the task in Control Panel, the Properties of the task show) How can I change the default from Properties to Run?
My VPR Matrix (XP Home) Notebook's screen can ONLY be seen in the sunlight--but even then it is nearly impossible to see! What I want to do is view the computer on my external monitor, so I can transfer some files to another computer--but I can't see to change the settings. Can this be done just using 'keystrokes' or is there some other way?FYI: I bought this computer from BestBuy. It was quite expensive in 2003. recently, I brought it back to have it repaired. The Geek Squad wrote up a work order and charged me a $238.00 non-refundable deposit (as the warranty was no longer in effect). They told me they'd have to send it to California to be repaired.
compaq presario 5000, 5BW130, new seagate hardrive, new install of windows xp sp2.My problem is I want to change the screen resolution, in display properties it won't let me move the slider it's set for 800 by 600 pixels, can't move it any further, color quality is: High 24 (bit) or medium (16 bit)that's it I want to make thing smaller what do I have to do, and what do I need??
I now have W XP. When I click on folders I get icons or thumbnails. I want to establish "LIST" as the default way to view files. When I click on List, it works the one time but then future clicks brings me back to the thumbnails.
my mom installed a virus the other day on accident. (Some program called Dr. Spy Shreddar, or something like that.) I deleted it, but some stuff was weird with the computer. I tried restarting the system to get the old configuration back, but the virus just installed itself again. For one of the problems they made me go into the registry and set something to the value of 0 in order to get the desktop tab back in the Display Properties box. (You know when you right click on the desktop and select properties.) That's all fine and dandy, but here's the other 1/2 of my problem: I can't access some of the features in the tab.
I have a old Dell computer which I brought a 24" Dell HD monitor. I upgraded it with a new graphics card which has both VGA and HD capability hook-ups. Now we have a new tower to go with exisiting 24" monitor. My problem is I can not get a old standard VGA monitor to work with the old system listed above. When I plug in the the VGA monitor plug in the VGA outlet in the old computer I get no signal to the monitor. What do I need to do with drivers or other wise to get the old computer back to being able to be used with the old VGA monitor?
I have tried to follow instructions on loading my drivers for the Dell E153FP flat panal monitor.I did it once before and it worked. When I did a clean install od WinXP,when I get to the properties tab in the Monitor section, the tab is disabled and the monitor is not listed in the system devices. In the display section of monitor it is labeled as (Default Monitor),and will not let me in properties section.
In device manager I have a Creative Audigy Audio Processor (WDM) which is showing as working ok and the device is enable. However under Sounds & Audio Device Properties this is missing from both the Sound Playback and Sound Recording - when the drop down tab is selected nothing is shown.Any ideas how I get this back so I can select as the Default Device,
When i right-click my desktop and choose properties, the panel that opens doesnt have any tabs. The weird thing, is when i click on the places of the tabs, the tab switches, but they r invisible, and much much more smaller... like, every tab is about 3-5 mm in length, aqnd i have to be accurate, click on something i cant c, with a small size.Another thing, when i change any setting, then press "Apply", the tabs r back normally, but when i reopen the panel, they r gone.
I cannot change desktop wallpaper. The Desktop tab under Display Properties has all of the available options for wallpaper in gray. I also cannot click "Browse."Also I cannot choose a picture to "set as Desktop Background."
I have windows xp and Im having trouble with my background. When I go into display properties, under background I cant select any backgrounds. It stays one solid color and behind that is a background.
Every image I place an image in 'My Pictures' folder it is by default being placed in my Background list.I would prefer to use the browse function in Display Properties> Background to select which images to add to the list.As it set up right now I will eventually end up with an unwieldy number of images in the list. What can I do to change this.
Awhile back when my computer was going cuckoo ( i think because my daughter went on that stupid kazaa infectious website!!!) Somehow pictures from a folder that had nothing to do with screensavers or wallpaper suddenly appeared as choices. Well i couldnt figure out how they got into that d.p. tab much less delete them but somehow i stumbled across a way to disable so no one could change it. well needless to say can't figure out how to enable it and was wondering how to fix it.
I built my comp four months ago and everything has been running surprisingly well. Now, I have two back up hdds and I they never format for some reason, so I was going to do it with the XP installer disc.. but I couldn't really figure out how to completely format/whipe any of my backup drives so I just cancelled out. Now, I loaded up my main disk and my DISPLAY was all sorts of messed up. So I reinstalled my NvIdia drivers.. they work. BUT EVERY TIME I RESTART it goes back to being all kinds of messed up. And when I say messed up I mean the resolution is terrible and everything is all big and slow.
Another problem, I've had it for a while, and it's not huge, but it would be interesting to see if anyone knows a fix for it.My desktop tab in display properties has gone missing. I've tried various regentries (downloaded off the net mostly) to try and work this back in, but none of them work.i've also looked at the current user registry settings, and all are in shape. i'm running XP Home and so there's no group settings from the run menu, :s i can't imagine what it cuold be :S
I am using windows XP on my laptop. I am unable to change the background on my Desktop and staays on NONE whatever I click and cannot add pics to it either. Also I cannot download DirectX 9.0 either from a games disc or the internet any suggestions please would be very welcome.
I have xp and a 17" monitor. My display is set at 800 x 600 and the pages are too big for my screen and the writing is massive I have tried Display Properties settings 1024 x 768 but can hardly see the text then.
I just ran into a problem with my display properties. It occurred after a virus attacked my computer and reset the desktop to a false "blue screen of death". I was able to remove it Ad-Aware SE, but once i was working with the computer again, I found that the tabs under "display properties" were missing. They included "Themes", "Desktop" and "Appearances". I already tried reinstalling XP and carefully reinstalling the ATI drivers, but i still only see the "screen saver" and "settings" tabs.
Using Windows Professional XP: How do you control what is displayed when you "hover" over the file entry in Windows Explorer? My home system shows all kinds of information; File type, Date modified, Size, etc. While a system I use at work only shows File type.
When I go to Display Properties//Desktop (tab)// and select a wallpaper there are several copies of the same thing. Is there a way to limit it to only those pics in the Windows//Web//Wallpaper folder?
I had a version of the Fraud.c virus, and have removed it, but in the process deleted some contaminated files that I probably needed. I don't know which ones, but now I have lost three of the five tabs in my Display Properties menu box. Can I fix this wthout a repair reinstall? I still have my screensavers and wallpapers, even my themes, its just that I can't access them through the Display Properties menu box.
I reformatted my hard drive and after words of reinstalling OS I wanted to change my bachground so as usual i right click desktop and go to properties but there is nothing there but the themes tab! Does anyone know what to do to fis this problem so that I can set screensavers and change backgrounds?
I am seem to be missing some of the tabs in display properties in control panel. I am running windows XP home edition. I picked up a virus and I had some other issues for a little while. I noticed when it started to infect and I pulled my internet cord in case it was going to try to get at any of my personal data. I ran my Norton 360 right away and after about an hour of running the scans and deleting some stuff, my comp started to work a lot better, but now I seem to be missing the tabs where you would change wallpaper and screen saver settings. There might be more, but I'm a casual computer user and I don't remember what the others might be Well looking at my norton history there were a few viruses:
Trojan.Fakeavalert Trojan.Zlob times 3 Bloodhound.sonar.1 and one named simply downloader
Right now the comp seems to be working OK and all scans come back clear, so it's just the tabs as far as I know.
Windows XP Home SP1. The only tab that shows on Display Properties is Themes. Desktop, Screen Saver, Appearance, and Settings are missing. Both with the onboard Intel vide chipset and with an ATI PCI card plugged in for troubleshooting. I remember something like this several years ago, but can not find anything in newsgroup or Microsoft searches.
