Changing Default View In Save Picture Dialog Box
Jan 18, 2007
I can change the view format with the drop down menu each time, but I would like to change it so it defaults to thumbnail view. I'm OK with a registry edit if I have to. Screenshot of the dialog box Note: the folders open as thumbnails in My Documents>My Pictures.

Whenever I save a picture from IE 6.0, the "Save Piccture" window always opens in a thumbnail view of "My Pictures". Is there any way I can make it open in the list view instead?

When I click on the Windows Explorer icon, it opens up with the left side being the blue bar with File and Folder Tasks, Other Places and Details showing. I have to manually click on the Folders button at the top to get the view I want. Is there a way to make this Folders view be the default view when I open Windows Explorer?

Running Windows XP SP2 and I have just noticed in the couple days, that whenever I use an open/save as dialog box (to open/save a song in from firefox, to send a file in messenger etc), all the files are getting listed and arranged by name in reverse order (z-a).They were always getting displayed by name in the right order, which I assume is the default, until recently.Any idea on how I could get it back that way? I know it is a minor issue, but it has really decreased the speed with which I look through my system.I've tried arranging the icons by name, but it never seems to save.

In any applications, when I click save as, that box hangs for at least 35-40 seconds before I can tell it where to save the file. Exemple: In IE, if I download a file, I'll click save as, and wait 35-40 seconds before I get a response from the computer. I have tried just about anything I know to fix this without having to reformat. I have the same dehavior in messenger or any of the other programs I use. The problem seems to be with the open/save as dialog box. I run WinXp Pro, SP2. Does anybody have any clues on how to fix this bizzare problem of mine?

Desktop - Windows XP SP3 - AMD Athlon 1800+1.53GHz - 640MB RAM (Built 2002)(Wife's Computer) - HP 3740 Printer.I have only just fixed this PC after a 6 month viral infection and now have full security (if there is such a thing) and all seems to be working fine except that whenever I try to print, I get the Save Dialog Box (prompting a '*.xls') instead of the Print Dialog Box. Naturally with all the Malware scans and fixes that have been done, the Registry has taken alot of messing about but should be clean now. However there is an entry which I cannot find any info for;
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentversionRunlphc17aj0er6r.exe Supposedly residing in C:/Windows/System32 but I have been unable to find it there. As a temporary precaution I have renamed it's file extension. Does anyone know anything about this file and whether there may be a connection with the Save/Print problem.

Without going through regedit, is there a way to add a network drive or some other shortcut on the left pane of the open/save dialog box? See the red circled area in the image below. I'm using WinXP SP4 with Windowblinds installed. What about rearranging the order the icons already appear?

Normally when you double click an image file, the default Windows Picture And Fax Viewer (I'll use WPF for short) program let's you view it. Recently, it's not working. I double click various images that showed up fine bef, but now nothing. It's like I'm Double clicking some empty space. Well, not quit empty space, as i do see the hourglass animation briefly when I do that, but previews in thumbnail and filmstrip mode are no longer there either. My pics are BMP, GIF, and JPG format. Pics i had before, as well as new ones I save using "save picture as" or via a screenshot utility canNOT be opend using WPF. The pics haven't gone corrupt

I had no idea where to put this thread, but since I am running XP Home SP2 I put it here. EVERY picture I save in "My Pictures" ends up in the list of available wallpapers in the display properties. My other computer did not do this, I had to manual choose a particular pic from my folders and then I could use it as a wallpaper. The pictures were not just routed there by default like it seems to be doing now. My big issue is the list is now ridiculously long & I don't know how to stop them from going there & undo the ones that are already on the list.

I want to open .jpg files using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, and I have changed the file association to do that. The problem is, when I click on the "open image for editing" button, it opens Paint. I want it to open Photoshop. There appear to be no options (or any other) menus available.

Is there anyway I can change the file extension of JPG to open up with Microsoft Picture Manager? If so, can you please map out the steps I need to take to change the file extension?

Is there a setting in XP home and pro where you can set the number of pixels in the name from 180, which appears to be standard, to about 300 and have it reset all the files in folders set to open in "details" but do it all at once (registry or somewhere else), so I won't have to change this setting for each folder set to open the files with "details". I've got all this space out in the right 1/3 of the window and I would just like to set all the folder options which are to open with the "details view" to open with the file name at about 300 pixels instead of 180 pixels, so I won't have to reset each one manually.

I love the Windows Explorer Document Tree View and I am so lazy that it bothers me to switch to the view each time I open a new window. Is there a way to set the default view to open folders with the document tree showing?I have tried switching it to the classic view, but that doesn't have the versatility of the full document tree. And, as another article has suggested, I added /e to my My Documents shortcut target, but that didn't help either.

Does anyone know how to changing that default choice? I want an administrator account and a public account. In the public account I don't want any right-clicking, changing desktop icons, things like this. I also want all of the things left on the desktop (downloads, shortcuts, etc.) to be gone when they log out. I did look at group policy editor but I don't like it. So I put System Policy Editor on it from a Windows Server 2000 CD.I have a .POL file made already and can't get it to work. Any websites on this would also be great.

I've had XP 64 installed for a about 10 days now and everything is working fine. I didn't have any issues with drivers or applications. The default install and updates seem to use two versions of IE (64 and 32). I've swapped all my icons to choose the 32 bit version since there is no flash support for 64 bit browsers at this time. My problem is that I get a lot of links inside emails and when I click on those it always uses the 64 bit version. I've tried to change the default browser option through control panel but it only offers the option of IE and won't let me select which IE. I also have IE 32 set to check to make sure it's the default browser. I've done some Google searches but I must not be asking the right question because I can's find much on IE 64.

And of course you can go in and change it to sort by "Type" or view as "Icons" or "Thumbnails" but as so as you close it it reverts, and the next time you open it it will be back to "List" view, arranged by "Name."Having it sorted by name is acceptable, so as i said it never really bothered me, but now one of my computers is sorting by "Modified" which is just not working for me.So basically I'm trying to find out if there is a way to change the default folder/file view in these basic Open, Save, Save As, etc dialog box's.

I use Firefox as my main web browser. I've set it as the default browser in Internet Properties and most of the time it appears when I want it to. However, some third-party software will insist, when it needs to access the internet (e.g. when I'm trying to register it), on trying to open Internet Explorer. Is this some quirk of the third-party software, or is there anything I can do in Windows XP (home) to fix this minor annoyance?

I was having this problem on my old install of XP, which desperately needed a new install. In any case, I'm now using a freshly installed version of XP, and everything has been running perfectly for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, this one problem reappears: The File Open / Save As dialog box (aka Windows Common Control / comctl32.dll) takes forever to open (20 seconds to 60 seconds). I just did a chkdsk and defrag, and that did not solve the problem. Also, there are no network drives connected which could be slowing things down. This happens in both MS programs (such as Notepad) and 3rd party programs (such as Firefox).

It's a mole hill of a problem, but it is a bit annoying to have to click on my principal drive ("C") every time I'm doing a "save". I have enclosed an excerpt of a screen shot of my "save as" window to display how the default drive being automatically selected is the "D" drive rather than the "C" drive that I use primarily. To be honest, I don't know whether this can be corrected by a software change, or whether it's the way the two hard drives are connected in my computer.
