When I right click on Start and choose Explore, the default folder is C:..bla blaStart Menu.I want to change that so the default folder that opens is my network drive. I have found how to change the target folder when I go to Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer (change the Target in Properties), but that change did not affect the window that opens up when I right click on the Start menu and choose Explore.
First things first: WinXP Pro, SP2 fully up to date but system restore is turned off.Trying to get Windows Explorer to export a directory tree to a text file the other day instead of doing it via command line, I messed something up and can't get it back. In Explorer, this is where I was: Tools >> Folder Options >> File Types >> File Folder >>I managed to insert the script that I wanted, but somewhere along the way I made a mistake and set it to Default. Now, whenever I click on an folder in Explorer it runs whatever is set as default. I can "Default" a lot of things (enqueue in Winamp, play in VLC Media Player, Find, etc) but none of them is the simple "Open" command. I looked around at a couple other things (namely "Folder" and Firefox) in the File Types box, and while they both have Open commands included, I can't "Edit" them to see what kind of command they are running.
Does anyone know how to changing that default choice? I want an administrator account and a public account. In the public account I don't want any right-clicking, changing desktop icons, things like this. I also want all of the things left on the desktop (downloads, shortcuts, etc.) to be gone when they log out. I did look at group policy editor but I don't like it. So I put System Policy Editor on it from a Windows Server 2000 CD.I have a .POL file made already and can't get it to work. Any websites on this would also be great.
I've had XP 64 installed for a about 10 days now and everything is working fine. I didn't have any issues with drivers or applications. The default install and updates seem to use two versions of IE (64 and 32). I've swapped all my icons to choose the 32 bit version since there is no flash support for 64 bit browsers at this time. My problem is that I get a lot of links inside emails and when I click on those it always uses the 64 bit version. I've tried to change the default browser option through control panel but it only offers the option of IE and won't let me select which IE. I also have IE 32 set to check to make sure it's the default browser. I've done some Google searches but I must not be asking the right question because I can's find much on IE 64.
I use Firefox as my main web browser. I've set it as the default browser in Internet Properties and most of the time it appears when I want it to. However, some third-party software will insist, when it needs to access the internet (e.g. when I'm trying to register it), on trying to open Internet Explorer. Is this some quirk of the third-party software, or is there anything I can do in Windows XP (home) to fix this minor annoyance?
the default program for all of my pictures used to be Irfanview, I installed a new scanner and Adobe Photoshop was installed into my computer. now when I click on a picture it goes through the Adobe routine, can I get the Irfanview program back as my default, when I click on a picture. IM using winxp.
I recently got a new computer with XP Pro operating system. The first clip-art CD I ran brought up a box with choices of where and how I wanted to run CD's. I chose "Take no action" and now wish to change that. How do I go about changing that default choice?
I would like to change the DEFAULT langage of Windows XP that is to say I would like my WHOLE windows XP to be in English, not in French.Does anyone know how to do that ?
I can change the view format with the drop down menu each time, but I would like to change it so it defaults to thumbnail view. I'm OK with a registry edit if I have to. Screenshot of the dialog box Note: the folders open as thumbnails in My Documents>My Pictures.
I was just changing some folder icons in Folder Options>File Types and now when I click on a folder it opens in OneNote! I went to File Types>File Folder>Advanced and under the Actions it reads: Add to VLC find Lock folder with Folder Lock Open as Notebook in OneNote Play with VLC
The first two of the 3 check boxes underneath are ticked. I have no idea what the default action was before, but I don't see anything resembling simply open a folder. Can anyone help me reset the default action or create a new one to open the folder?
With the help of CNET my computer is back up and running, but I need more advice now. I formatted the hard drive to get rid of a trojan, and reinstalled stuff. Previously I had changed MY Documents from C Drive to D and made it the default, and I can't remember how I did it, I should have written it down!! My netbook is a Wind, 120GB HD 1GBRam, intel processor, XP SP3
I run windows xp and use the silver color scheme instead of the default (blue) color scheme. i started up my pc and windows had returned to the default color scheme so i restarted my pc and it was back to the silver scheme. All was well for a few weeks when it did the same thing agin. After restarting this time and i was back to the silver color scheme, all was well until this morning when i started my pc and it was back to the default blue so i restarted and it was still at the default blue.
I went to my display properties and manually set it back to the silver scheme, clicked on apply then ok and restarted my pc.Now it was back to the silver scheme. What could be the reason for this.I run spybot,ad-aware,spyblaster and microsoft anti-spyware and i also run ez-armor antivirus.I scan my pc everyday for spyware before i shutdown and i do regular virus scans and nothing is very often found as far as spyware except a tracking cookie once in awhile and never any viruses
The other day, I moved some files+folders outside of a folder just to organize things. I tried to put them back inside and I kept getting the "Cannot move file, it's being used.." error. I was pretty sure I wasn't using any of the files so I checked the permissions to find that under the security tab, inside the "Group or user name" was completely empty without any user names. I fixed it by adding my user name. This has happened before. A few months ago, I couldn't access any folders and files in this one particular folder without getting the "Acess denied" message. I found out that all my files and folders within that folder had no user names under the security tab which was a pain because I have over 100s of files in there and the only sure way to change the permission is to do them almost one by one.
I was wondering if there were any particular reason why it's doing this. I'm pretty sure that this computer is virus free and I almost never turn off the "Use simple file sharing" under the folder tool section. I've only played around with the permissions once over 5 months ago and I haven't touched it since. Also, is there a way to change every permission within one folder so that I won't have to do them manually one by one?
I hope someone knows the solution to this.On the favorites bar in IE6, when you click on the default folder icon it changes to an open folder as the list of links expands. I changed the yellow folders to different colors but would like to be able to have them change to an open folder of the same color when clicked on rather then staying as the same icon. Does anybody know of a way to do that? I know there must be a different path to the 2 icons (open and closed). I have made the icons in the colors I want in both open and closed but can't figure out how to get it to work.
how to do something in Folder Options, View settings. I have most of my folders in Windows Explorer set to appear as a list. But I would like folders in 'My Pictures' to appear as thumbnails. But when I change them to thumbnails they always revert back to list view when I go back into that folder.
Is there a setting in XP home and pro where you can set the number of pixels in the name from 180, which appears to be standard, to about 300 and have it reset all the files in folders set to open in "details" but do it all at once (registry or somewhere else), so I won't have to change this setting for each folder set to open the files with "details". I've got all this space out in the right 1/3 of the window and I would just like to set all the folder options which are to open with the "details view" to open with the file name at about 300 pixels instead of 180 pixels, so I won't have to reset each one manually.
am having problems changing the colour of my windows xp taskbar, and the colours of the bars inside a folder.the problem is when i try to change the colours to the original, using the appearance tab in the display properties, all it shows is windows classic styles, it doesnt show the original xp styles. (see attached print screen), what i want is the original colours of the folders and the task bar that are available when u first install xp.i had a trojan, spyware and malware problem, when i removed it the colours changed into classic.so, how do i change it into original,
On XP sp2 when opening or uploading jpegs in a folder such as when you do to upload onto a myspace account i.e., to keep it in thumbnail view each time you browse the folder to select the photo, changing it to thumbnail view to select photo each is what I have to do over and over.
And of course you can go in and change it to sort by "Type" or view as "Icons" or "Thumbnails" but as so as you close it it reverts, and the next time you open it it will be back to "List" view, arranged by "Name."Having it sorted by name is acceptable, so as i said it never really bothered me, but now one of my computers is sorting by "Modified" which is just not working for me.So basically I'm trying to find out if there is a way to change the default folder/file view in these basic Open, Save, Save As, etc dialog box's.
WinXP uses Documents & Settings as the default folder to store downloads, Word files, etc. How can I make another folder the default, so that when I start to download a file, it automatically opens MyDocs New. I know I can change the defaults on Word, Excel. but I want to change WinXP.
I have Windows XP Pro, SP2 and version 8.0 of Works.
Now when I start up the Works word processor and I use the "Open" function, it always opens in "My Documents". When I use "WordPad" it opens in the last folder used. Is there a way to make the Works word processor act like this? If not, is there a way to change the default opening folder? (Also is there a way to change the default location where a file is saved?)
Also, since this is closely related, I'll ask this: When you use the Open function in the Works wp, you get the "Open" dialog box. At the bottom there is a drop down box called, "Files of type". It always opens with "Works Document (*.wps). If you click the drop down box, one of the options is "All Files (*.*). Is there a way to change it to this?
I have problems with folder views continually changing from Icon to list or whatever. I read once that this has happened because I have used up the number of folder memories set in the Registry and you can edit this function in the Registry by increasing a value.
i am wanting to know when i am in a website and i want to open the file it downloads to the temporary file location and then nothing. It doesnt open or anything how do i get it to either change the file location where it goes to or just to open...
Windows Explorer used to open with the C: drive expanded and the display positioned roughly halfway down the list. Now it's opening with My Documents expanded. Is it possible to change the default display? I prefer the C drive display.(WinXP Home SP2)
In documents and settings a folder has been named after the old manager of this shop. How can I change the name to something else? In this folder are .java, cookies, and desktop folders.
If I double-click a file (or folder) in Windows Explorer, by default the computer opens the file or folder in another program (Virus Scan) and begins to scan it. Obviously, I don't want this. Normally, I should be able to hit ENTER, double-click, or right-click and select the first option, which should be open the folder or file in Explorer. However, this is not so, and I can't figure out what Default setting I changed in order to change the Default operation for any files or folders I select. I've poked around in the File Types tab of Folder Options (for Explorer) but this doesn't work
When you try to save an image in Microsoft Internet Explorer, the image will only save by the default bmp only. For example, when you right-click an image on a Web page, and then click Save Picture As, the file name that appears is Untitled, and the file type that appears is .bmp, instead of the right file name and type. This behavior occurs when a Damaged or Unknown program file (active or java) is downloaded to the downloaded program files folder. To troubleshoot and resolve this, empty the contents of the Temporary Internet Files folder, and then delete any files in the Downloaded Program Files folder that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged.
