Changing Favorites Folder Icon
Apr 26, 2007
I hope someone knows the solution to this.On the favorites bar in IE6, when you click on the default folder icon it changes to an open folder as the list of links expands. I changed the yellow folders to different colors but would like to be able to have them change to an open folder of the same color when clicked on rather then staying as the same icon. Does anybody know of a way to do that? I know there must be a different path to the 2 icons (open and closed). I have made the icons in the colors I want in both open and closed but can't figure out how to get it to work.

I don't know when or what could have caused the bright yellow star folder icon for the Favorites that links to IE but now I see I have a plain old regular folder icon. It's never been moved out of the original spot which is C:/Documents and Settings/user/Favorites. This does not make the folder unusable as IE still saves and gets shortcuts from it. I'm wondering if any of you out there have ever ran into this or any ideas of getting getting the original star icon back. This is on a WINXP Pro system with all the latest Microsoft updates.

On a Windows Media Center Edition 2004 Notebook Computer I can't seem to assign a custom icon to a folder in Favorites. I can copy the same folder to the desktop and customize the icon.My old machine running Windows XP Pro allowed customization of Favorites Folders and this machine seems to allow me to do it, but when I am done the manilla folder icon still remains stubbornly there. Folder seems to be read only. Windows Firewall is turned off. Web root Spy Sweeper is off, though I think new version runs a process no matter what.

I have problems with folder views continually changing from Icon to list or whatever. I read once that this has happened because I have used up the number of folder memories set in the Registry and you can edit this function in the Registry by increasing a value.

I formatted my drive and reinstalled XP last week. I saved all the pictures in the My Pictures folder to CD and I also saved the Favorites to CD. I have learned (from Mr. Brody) how to put the pictures back in the My Pictures folder. I now need to know how to put the favorites back in the Favorites menu. Do I simply go down the page of links and add each link or is there some other way?

Now when you go to C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersFavorites you see two more Favorites Folders inside the original. When trying to delete the extra two Favorites Folders we get an error message Favorites is a Windows system folder and is required for Windows to run properly. It cannot be deleted. Is there a way to delete these two unnecessary Favorites Folders within the original?

Used to be that when I was searching through folders in favorites that it would return to that folder when reviewing the different web pages within that folder. Now I have to search for the folder each time I view a page within the folder. I have XP SP3 with IE8. Is there any way to change the way favorites works (options)? I hate that favorites closes every time instead of staying open while you're trying to find a particular page. Seems its gotten less friendly through the years.

I'm wondering, is it possible to create a folder right beside the favorites in IE7? (Just to the left of the tabs.) I know folders can be created inside of the Favorites folder, but I was wondering if there could be a folder created right beside it, or in some place else that it would show up there or also where the Favorites is on the right side of the start menu.

For some unknown reason, my Favorites Folder's Icon, (i.e. C:D& SUser's Name Favorites), has reverted from its' accustomed "Yellow Star" to a "Default" Windows' Folder. The same applies to to the Favorites Icon Shortcut on my Start Menu. The "Yellow Star" is present in C:D&SAdministratorFavorites; however, if I copy the Desktop.ini file from the Administrator folder to my user name, or simply attempt to customize it manually via the "Change Icon" method in "Properties", I still get nowhere.

i was organizing and updating my favorites folder in order to make a backup. i got to this one link that kept slowing down my computer and forcing me to use ctrl-alt-del to "end task". it was a familiar link and nothing that I didn't intentionally put there. after the third time trying to open it and using "end task" to close it all of a sudden the entire contents of the folder disappeared. everytime I try to open the favorites folder nothing is there. i have spent years building that folder up and now it's all gone. I have tried to use a delete recovery program and nothing is there. this just happened this second and need some help so that I can possibly fix it before having the computer re-write on top of the files eliminating any chance of recovery.

I was just changing some folder icons in Folder Options>File Types and now when I click on a folder it opens in OneNote! I went to File Types>File Folder>Advanced and under the Actions it reads: Add to VLC find Lock folder with Folder Lock Open as Notebook in OneNote
Play with VLC
The first two of the 3 check boxes underneath are ticked. I have no idea what the default action was before, but I don't see anything resembling simply open a folder. Can anyone help me reset the default action or create a new one to open the folder?

Am having a problem with Display Properties in WinXP-2. During the first 5 minutes after boot-up, screen resolution on my desk top is unstable with icon and window sizes changing from large to small and vice-versa. Resetting the Display Properties during this time has no effect. When the system warms up the problem is gone. Can the Monitor itself be the problem, or is it most likely the Video Card? I don't have another monitor to use as a test unit.

The other day, I moved some files+folders outside of a folder just to organize things. I tried to put them back inside and I kept getting the "Cannot move file, it's being used.." error. I was pretty sure I wasn't using any of the files so I checked the permissions to find that under the security tab, inside the "Group or user name" was completely empty without any user names. I fixed it by adding my user name. This has happened before. A few months ago, I couldn't access any folders and files in this one particular folder without getting the "Acess denied" message. I found out that all my files and folders within that folder had no user names under the security tab which was a pain because I have over 100s of files in there and the only sure way to change the permission is to do them almost one by one.
I was wondering if there were any particular reason why it's doing this. I'm pretty sure that this computer is virus free and I almost never turn off the "Use simple file sharing" under the folder tool section. I've only played around with the permissions once over 5 months ago and I haven't touched it since. Also, is there a way to change every permission within one folder so that I won't have to do them manually one by one?

Is there a setting in XP home and pro where you can set the number of pixels in the name from 180, which appears to be standard, to about 300 and have it reset all the files in folders set to open in "details" but do it all at once (registry or somewhere else), so I won't have to change this setting for each folder set to open the files with "details". I've got all this space out in the right 1/3 of the window and I would just like to set all the folder options which are to open with the "details view" to open with the file name at about 300 pixels instead of 180 pixels, so I won't have to reset each one manually.

I have Windows XP Pro, SP2 and version 8.0 of Works.
Now when I start up the Works word processor and I use the "Open" function, it always opens in "My Documents". When I use "WordPad" it opens in the last folder used. Is there a way to make the Works word processor act like this? If not, is there a way to change the default opening folder? (Also is there a way to change the default location where a file is saved?)
Also, since this is closely related, I'll ask this: When you use the Open function in the Works wp, you get the "Open" dialog box. At the bottom there is a drop down box called, "Files of type". It always opens with "Works Document (*.wps). If you click the drop down box, one of the options is "All Files (*.*). Is there a way to change it to this?

One of the most common functions I perform in Windows XP is to create a new folder in Explorer. As best I can tell, there is no way to create a shortcut to do this nor is there a toolbar icon for this. I admit right-clicking on an empty space and waiting for the "New" menu is not an arduous task, but it seems it should be quicker and easier. Is there a one-touch way to create a new folder in XP Explorer?

I am wanting to change the icons for the folders in My Documents. The reason is because I had to recreate the My Pictures and My Music folders a while back when I had to create a new account and delete a previous one due to having lost my password. Right now they simply look like plain folders on the Start Menu. (Using Windows XP Start Menu) If the folder you want to change is not located in My Documents or its subfolders, use Search to find it. To open Search, click Start, and then click Search. Right-click the folder you want to change, and then click Properties. On the Customize tab, under Folder pictures, click Choose Picture. Click the picture you want to use to identify the folder in Thumbnails view. To open My Documents, click Start, and then click My Documents. You must be in Thumbnails view to see the folder picture. To switch to Thumbnails view, on the View menu, click Thumbnails. In Thumbnails view, Windows displays up to four images from your folder on the folder icon by default. The images Windows displays are the last four images you modified. So I did what it said and went to the properties for the folder. But for some reason, there was no cutomize tab.
