One of the most common functions I perform in Windows XP is to create a new folder in Explorer. As best I can tell, there is no way to create a shortcut to do this nor is there a toolbar icon for this. I admit right-clicking on an empty space and waiting for the "New" menu is not an arduous task, but it seems it should be quicker and easier. Is there a one-touch way to create a new folder in XP Explorer?

Program icons do not appear in the shortcut|properties|change icon list. Is there a way to make the icon replacement?

Where I can set the environment variable in the system properties and at the command line, what I really want to do is create multiple Windows shortcut Icons on the desktop, one for each possible environment variable setting. I can then select the desired runtime configuration by selecting the corresponding icon.I have tried the following on the Windows command line and it works, however when I put the same in the Icon properties->Target it complains"set ENVIRO_SETTING=1 && program_name.exe"

I would prefer it be where "My Computer", "My Documents", etc is, but I would settle for where "Internet" and "E-Mail" currently are. I can successfully add apps to that area, but not folders. View 14 Replies View RelatedAny time I right click on a SHORTCUT to a folder or disc and try to open it via the Explore option, I get the error message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.We are sorry for the inconvenience" and then the Active Desktop Recovery screen.If I open, for instance, the folder "X" via the right click/Explore option, it opens the folder for me to view. But if I do the exact same thing with a SHORTCUT to folder "X", I get the error message above and then the Active Desktop Recovery screen.Note, however, that if I just double-click on a shortcut to a folder,it opens fine, as normal. It is ONLY when I right click and attempt to "Explore" the folder or disc that I get the error message! This is clearly a "exporer" problem. So basically any time I Explore a Folder via a shortcut, I get the above error message and then if I agree to report that problem to Microsoft, I then lose my desktop photo and get the Active Desktop Recovery screen. But if I click Dont Send on the MS Error Message, then it just closes the Window and leaves me with my (normal) desktop.

The reason is because I had to recreate the My Pictures and My Music folders a while back when I had to create a new account and delete a previous one due to having lost my password. Right now they simply look like plain folders on the Start Menu. (Using Windows XP Start Menu) If the folder you want to change is not located in My Documents or its subfolders, use Search to find it. To open Search, click Start, and then click Search. Right-click the folder you want to change, and then click Properties. On the Customize tab, under Folder pictures, click Choose Picture. Click the picture you want to use to identify the folder in Thumbnails view. To open My Documents, click Start, and then click My Documents. You must be in Thumbnails view to see the folder picture. To switch to Thumbnails view, on the View menu, click Thumbnails. In Thumbnails view, Windows displays up to four images from your folder on the folder icon by default. The images Windows displays are the last four images you modified. So I did what it said and went to the properties for the folder. But for some reason, there was no cutomize tab.

It's never been moved out of the original spot which is C:/Documents and Settings/user/Favorites. This does not make the folder unusable as IE still saves and gets shortcuts from it. I'm wondering if any of you out there have ever ran into this or any ideas of getting getting the original star icon back. This is on a WINXP Pro system with all the latest Microsoft updates.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI hope someone knows the solution to this.On the favorites bar in IE6, when you click on the default folder icon it changes to an open folder as the list of links expands. I changed the yellow folders to different colors but would like to be able to have them change to an open folder of the same color when clicked on rather then staying as the same icon. Does anybody know of a way to do that? I know there must be a different path to the 2 icons (open and closed). I have made the icons in the colors I want in both open and closed but can't figure out how to get it to work.

I can copy the same folder to the desktop and customize the icon.My old machine running Windows XP Pro allowed customization of Favorites Folders and this machine seems to allow me to do it, but when I am done the manilla folder icon still remains stubbornly there. View 11 Replies View RelatedWhen I downloaded the updated drivers for my hp scanner software, an icon appeared on my desktop and if I right click it to delete it my computer freezes. If I drag it to the recycle bin or any other folder it just duplicates it and it is still on the desktop. I can't find anywhere else where I could delete it from the registry for example or add/delete programs list. I can't rename it , to try to delete it, because of the freezing issue. I will never use it so It bothers me that its there.

For Example: For the C: Icon, it would be under the divider named Hard Drive, for the D: E: and A: Icons, they would be under the divider named Removable Media. So that's what's missing. Whenever I double-click on a folder, it opens in a new window, not in the same one. I even changed "folder option>>general>>open each folder in same window" but with no result. I was actually trying to change the icon for the 'file folder' and I dont really know what I did (went to 'folder options>>file types>>file folder>>advanced>>change icon....but I changed the icon back to the original icon again) , but from that time, I am unable to change it back to open folders in the same window. In the 'actions' (folder options>>file types>>file folder>>advanced) section (after i changed the icon) all I could see was a 'find' option. It was opening 'search' window every time I double clicked on a folder, so I created a new action called open and selected 'explorer' as the application to use and then set this 'open' as default. Although it solved the initial problem of opening the 'search' window, it still opens every folder in a new window.
