Not A Valid Win32 Application / Doesn't Have The Word Icon
Aug 30, 2005I recently puchased a new computer with an amd athlon 64 processor running windows xp. I installed office 97 from my original cd. when I try to open word documents in MY DOCUMENTS i get an error message:C:Documents and SettingsOwnerMy DocumentsTest file.doc is not a valid Win32 application. I can open the file if I open Word first and open the file from there.I have selected word as the program to open doc files in folder options.
However when I look at a word created file in my documents it doesn't have the word icon it has an icon which I think might be for word pad.
Icons Always On Desktop - Only Showed The Word
Jan 11, 2007I have a Media Center PC, and the icons always on my desktop only showed the words. This is kind of hard to explain, but now there is a blue box in which the words are in. For Example, My Computer. Before that is all you would see under the little icon; now you see a blue box with white words inside of it saying My Computer. I messed around with all the view properties with no luck

Jul 8, 2007I have Windows XP Pro, SP2 and version 8.0 of Works.
Now when I start up the Works word processor and I use the "Open" function, it always opens in "My Documents". When I use "WordPad" it opens in the last folder used. Is there a way to make the Works word processor act like this? If not, is there a way to change the default opening folder? (Also is there a way to change the default location where a file is saved?)
Also, since this is closely related, I'll ask this: When you use the Open function in the Works wp, you get the "Open" dialog box. At the bottom there is a drop down box called, "Files of type". It always opens with "Works Document (*.wps). If you click the drop down box, one of the options is "All Files (*.*). Is there a way to change it to this?
Changing Folder Icons - Lock Folder Not Open
Jul 22, 2008I was just changing some folder icons in Folder Options>File Types and now when I click on a folder it opens in OneNote! I went to File Types>File Folder>Advanced and under the Actions it reads: Add to VLC find Lock folder with Folder Lock Open as Notebook in OneNote
Play with VLC
The first two of the 3 check boxes underneath are ticked. I have no idea what the default action was before, but I don't see anything resembling simply open a folder. Can anyone help me reset the default action or create a new one to open the folder?

Oct 5, 2009When I try to open Microsoft Office Word 2003 a window pops up that says window installer then it says installing microsoft office word feature. It stops half way and another window pops up that says Installation error file not found. A required installation file SKU112.CAB could not be found. Original installation source required. If you installed Microsoft Office Standard edition 2003 from cd please insert your cd.
If you installed Microsoft office standard edition 2003 over your computer network please browse to the installation source on your computer. Also a window popped up that says Microsoft word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install application. I don't have the cd its lost. This just started doing this about a month ago. I can't open any files through microsoft office word or power point.
Opening A Word Document- Slow When Clicking On A Word File?
Aug 10, 2005When I click on a Word document (on my Desktop, for example), it seems to take a long time for the document to open. Yet if I have Word open and click on the document it opens instantaneously. Similarly, when I right click on a document, photo, spreadsheet file, it takes what seems a long time for the menu (Open, Run as, Send to, Delete, etc..) to open.

Aug 27, 2005This is a bit weird and I have a feeling it's something that will have to be adjusted in the registry...
I have my My Documents on my physical second D: drive while all my programs and the OS are on the C: drive. In the My Documents folder is the My Music, My Video, My Pictures folders that XP automatically assigns icons for and doesn't allow you to change the look of them.
I had been backing up this internal 60GB D:My Documents to an external 120GB USB drive. I decided to put the external one into the computer because I bought another external 160GB drive for backup.
OK, everything is fine, but the icons for My Music, My Video, My Pictures folders that XP automatically assigns are no more, they are just plain looking folders, but I can't customize them because these are the special folders that XP assigns for their specific use.
Does any one know what might have happened? Is it possible that the different serial number of the drive, or something else may have messed things up?
Browser Video/desktop Icons Shaded?
Jul 12, 2008When I came home from work the other day, the display on my computer was screwwed up. The first thing I noticed was that the text for the icons on my desktop was off-color. Instead of being the usual icons and black text, everything looked strangely shaded with blue and pink... They all still function properly, but look strange. Also the start menu at the bottom and all the selections under the start menu are the same way. Second; when I open Firefox and try to view videos, the video is covered in red lines and boxes, and is unviewable. The video is still playing, but so distorted that I can't make it out. i ran windows troubleshooting, and have been searching the internet for hours now to find a solution, but have had no luck. The only changes I have made to the computer that I can think of, was to delete some of the unnecessary folders in the My Documents folder. I didn't see anything that would have caused these issues.

Jul 17, 2005Whenever I open my video folder, it closes the explorer and says error. It happens with several .avi file. For Example, I have .avi file called A B C; the explorer closes whenever file A is in the folder. When it's out of the folder, the explorer works just fine without closing. I use Matroska pack codec, is this the problem? I remember on the error message says something about the codec is not compatible?

Jan 5, 2007Recently, two weeks or so ago, every time I access My Video folder in My Documents (I am the administrator) I get the message that Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and has to shut down. Then the message to send details to Microsoft. After a few trials I have found that programs such as Photoshop or Picasa for two examples close as soon as I access said folder with them.

The reason is because I had to recreate the My Pictures and My Music folders a while back when I had to create a new account and delete a previous one due to having lost my password. Right now they simply look like plain folders on the Start Menu. (Using Windows XP Start Menu) If the folder you want to change is not located in My Documents or its subfolders, use Search to find it. To open Search, click Start, and then click Search. Right-click the folder you want to change, and then click Properties. On the Customize tab, under Folder pictures, click Choose Picture. Click the picture you want to use to identify the folder in Thumbnails view. To open My Documents, click Start, and then click My Documents. You must be in Thumbnails view to see the folder picture. To switch to Thumbnails view, on the View menu, click Thumbnails. In Thumbnails view, Windows displays up to four images from your folder on the folder icon by default. The images Windows displays are the last four images you modified. So I did what it said and went to the properties for the folder. But for some reason, there was no cutomize tab.

Sep 1, 2006I don't know when or what could have caused the bright yellow star folder icon for the Favorites that links to IE but now I see I have a plain old regular folder icon. It's never been moved out of the original spot which is C:/Documents and Settings/user/Favorites. This does not make the folder unusable as IE still saves and gets shortcuts from it. I'm wondering if any of you out there have ever ran into this or any ideas of getting getting the original star icon back. This is on a WINXP Pro system with all the latest Microsoft updates.

Apr 26, 2007I hope someone knows the solution to this.On the favorites bar in IE6, when you click on the default folder icon it changes to an open folder as the list of links expands. I changed the yellow folders to different colors but would like to be able to have them change to an open folder of the same color when clicked on rather then staying as the same icon. Does anybody know of a way to do that? I know there must be a different path to the 2 icons (open and closed). I have made the icons in the colors I want in both open and closed but can't figure out how to get it to work.
