For reason(s) unknown to me, when I now select "thumbnails" or "tiles" from the View menu of my video files listing page, I am no longer getting thumbnail pictures embedded on the individual video files, just icons depicting what format file it is such as WMV, MPEG, etc.

I have my My Documents on my physical second D: drive while all my programs and the OS are on the C: drive. In the My Documents folder is the My Music, My Video, My Pictures folders that XP automatically assigns icons for and doesn't allow you to change the look of them.
I had been backing up this internal 60GB D:My Documents to an external 120GB USB drive. I decided to put the external one into the computer because I bought another external 160GB drive for backup.
OK, everything is fine, but the icons for My Music, My Video, My Pictures folders that XP automatically assigns are no more, they are just plain looking folders, but I can't customize them because these are the special folders that XP assigns for their specific use.
Does any one know what might have happened? Is it possible that the different serial number of the drive, or something else may have messed things up?
problem started about 2 weeks ago, seems to only crash when loading video files specifically

I've been using XP SP2 and have never had a problem with thumbnail view in windows explorer - I turn it on, it shows me pretty thumbnails of any images, movies, etc in the folder. A few days ago, I noticed that it had suddenly stopped working for image files - video and html files still get a preview, but not images. It stopped working about the time when I installed an old version of Photoshop (7.0.1, the only one I had laying about for a quick job I needed it for...), and my efforts on Google seem to imply that it may be the culprit

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have strange lines appearing over and around my desktop icons.Doesn't have those in safe mode.Moving the cursor to a different section of the page I am on right now will change what is next to the cursor. What is around the cursor changes when the cursor itself changes from a pointer to a finger to whatever. Sometimes dots, sometimes a bold "i".Changing the hardware acceleration down one notch eliminates the problem with the cursor, but my cpu goes into overtime. Windows startup screen just has lines of small squares all over.The problems were worse until I d/l the latest drivers from ATI.And video update is slow, relatively speaking. Going from one busy window to another gives white windows. Can still watch deleted multiple emails disappear one by one.

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy internet connection is working fine. I have the checkbox for don't display whether connection is connected or having problems. But something weird is going on. After I come back to the computer after a while, there are multiple local area connection icons in the systray indicating that there is a cable unplugged. But my internet is working and I can't find any other local connections in network places. The other weird thing happening with those little icons in the systray is that when I try to hover over them with the mouse to right click on them to see where they are coming from, they vanish as soon as I hover over them. There will be a row from 2 - 6 of them, they al vanish as I hover across the lot of them.

After running a program called System Mechanic from Iolo technologies I discovered my computer had stopped working properly and kept telling me that files essential to the smooth running of windows had been changed. I did a system restore operation and almost everything went back to normal. The only exception is my desktop icons, and icons on the quick lanch bar. They're appearing inside white squares and not against the desktop wallpaper like they should almost as if the wallpaper has not loaded properly under the
icons
My windows does not show the files extension even i uncheck the "hide extensions for knows file type" in the file option menu.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a piece of audio hardware and after installing the software on my computer it now has duplicate files of all my .WAVs and .MP3s So for example, if I've got Section 78 - Dronodome.wav right below that is Section 78 - Dronodome.tqd
So if I open a folder with 50 files, there's 50 of these .tqd files right beside them.
I'm wondering if there's a way to set it in XP so that ALL .tqd files on my computer are 'hidden'.
For now I've just been holding down 'ctrl' and highlighting all the .tqd files in a folder, then right clicking and going to properties and setting them as hidden. Works great but there's no way I want to do this for every folder
I started using VLC Media Player a week or so ago because I was having (have always had) problems with the bloated Windows Media Player. But VLC has an odd problem. When I click on (e.g.) an .avi or .wmv file that came attached to an e-mail, I get an error message saying that "the file does not have a program associated with it to perform the action". But it DOES. I open Folder Options, and there it is. Now, the only action in the file type box is "Play". I notice that the one thing I open with WMP also has an "Open" as an action. I tried entering an Open action, and browsed to the VLC.exe file to put in the path, but it doesn't work.
The odd thing about the situation is that if I SAVE the attachment, then double-click it, it plays perfectly using VLC? Why will it play after I save it, but not when I click it as an e-mail attachment? I suspect it has something to do with having an "Open" action in the file type, but don't know how to enter same and have it work.
i am a beginner and have tried to sort this out by searching the net for a cure - but every 'solution' seems to be a ropy sales gambit!When I try to download, instead of a dialog box choosing between 'Run' and 'Save', it's one offering me only 'Find' and 'Save'.Clicking 'Find' brings up the Windows File Association page stating:-"MIME Type: application/x-msdownload Description: UnKnownWindows does not recognize this MIME type." so, a few years back i read a magazine that said to change the type of computer in device manager to standard pc because it made the computer run a little better or faster.so now i've got my laptop and i've noticed it getting slower and thought that i would do this... VERY BAD MOVE! i can still boot windows and everything - it meant that i had to let the computer reinstall all of the drivers for my hardware - but i have noticed in the device manager now that there are two instances of 'standard pc', there is also a new section titled 'other devices' with about 15 devices that seem to have no driver for them - some mention 'ISA' so i am guessing that changing to standard pc means that windows thinks my laptop is now a desktop pc with ISA slots? i find that when i put my laptop lid down the thing shuts down, when i press the power button it turns off straight away (doesn't even shut down!). i had had the laptop configured for ages to do nothing when i closed the lid and give me shut down options when i pressed the power button. i look in power options and i can only cinfigure the monitor screen and hard disk power off options - every other option is not available. when i do bring up the shut down options i can no longer choose standby.
i have also realised that i can not turn on my wireless connection - i've tried all sorts to get it to work with no avail! the laptop is an acer ferrari and when i call up the manager app it says that bluetooth and wireless are not present (by the way i can still get the bluetooth button to work - correction - it starts up with the button on but if i turn it off it won't let me turn it on again). the emanager and presentation manager buttons on the laptops casing don't work either (i have to access them via software route).
Just one very quick and propably simple question. somehow i managed to change a setting somewhere that has made all the files on my computer have the file type e.g. .jpg or .bmp at the end of every file name, how can i change this so it goes back to normall.for example i have; picture.jpg istead of just picture as the file name

When I came home from work the other day, the display on my computer was screwwed up. The first thing I noticed was that the text for the icons on my desktop was off-color. Instead of being the usual icons and black text, everything looked strangely shaded with blue and pink... They all still function properly, but look strange. Also the start menu at the bottom and all the selections under the start menu are the same way. Second; when I open Firefox and try to view videos, the video is covered in red lines and boxes, and is unviewable. The video is still playing, but so distorted that I can't make it out. i ran windows troubleshooting, and have been searching the internet for hours now to find a solution, but have had no luck. The only changes I have made to the computer that I can think of, was to delete some of the unnecessary folders in the My Documents folder. I didn't see anything that would have caused these issues.

However if i right click and go to open then the file will open. This problem has occurred in the past month, when previously there was no issue with copying large files. It first emerged when I tried to copy a 65GB folder to my external hard drive as a back-up. I spoke to a technician at Western Digital, who manufactured the external hard drive, and their suggestion was to reformat the drive from FAT32 to NTFS, which we did. However,I can only copy files of approximately 2GB or less to anywhere on the system.
I want to put the pictures that I saved from the My Pictures folder back to the My Pictures folder. I have set one of them as the new desktop background. (It was before the format).I have typed in "Export Pictures from CD to My Pictures folder" without the quotes and I get a list of links pertaining to CD recording errors and other things like that. I did right click on a picture in Drive E (my CD-RW) just to see what would come up and I noticed that on the Send To menu that these pictures can be sent to the desktop.

Im looking for a way to re-create two folders, 1 my pictures, 2 my video. i have tried TweakUI, but that can only move a path. I tried repair (not Repair console) with XP SP2 CD, and ended up with a chose OS screen (which i found out can be avoided with msconfig.) but still regedit has a big whole where my pictues and my video should be. Ive both a SATA and an IDE drive, IDE is used as storage and SATA is partitioned and computer management say Extended partition, with boot on it and system is on the IDE one.
Before it got messed up i had my documents on the ohter partition, which is how i want it.
I had media player 9 than I upgraded to 10 thinking it would solve the problem but it didnt. Everytime I play an mpeg or an avi file(or any video file) I cant control the brightness, hue etc it just snaps back to default settings everytime I move the slider to the left or right.
