I'm working on a Dell Dimension Desktop 4550. The background loads, but then nothing else. The ONLY functionality there is is the Tsk Manager. In the Processes tab, explorer.exe is not running.

I have strange lines appearing over and around my desktop icons.Doesn't have those in safe mode.Moving the cursor to a different section of the page I am on right now will change what is next to the cursor. What is around the cursor changes when the cursor itself changes from a pointer to a finger to whatever. Sometimes dots, sometimes a bold "i".Changing the hardware acceleration down one notch eliminates the problem with the cursor, but my cpu goes into overtime. Windows startup screen just has lines of small squares all over.The problems were worse until I d/l the latest drivers from ATI.And video update is slow, relatively speaking. Going from one busy window to another gives white windows. Can still watch deleted multiple emails disappear one by one.

After running a program called System Mechanic from Iolo technologies I discovered my computer had stopped working properly and kept telling me that files essential to the smooth running of windows had been changed. I did a system restore operation and almost everything went back to normal. The only exception is my desktop icons, and icons on the quick lanch bar. They're appearing inside white squares and not against the desktop wallpaper like they should almost as if the wallpaper has not loaded properly under the
icons
For reason(s) unknown to me, when I now select "thumbnails" or "tiles" from the View menu of my video files listing page, I am no longer getting thumbnail pictures embedded on the individual video files, just icons depicting what format file it is such as WMV, MPEG, etc.
View 11 Replies View RelatedMy internet connection is working fine. I have the checkbox for don't display whether connection is connected or having problems. But something weird is going on. After I come back to the computer after a while, there are multiple local area connection icons in the systray indicating that there is a cable unplugged. But my internet is working and I can't find any other local connections in network places. The other weird thing happening with those little icons in the systray is that when I try to hover over them with the mouse to right click on them to see where they are coming from, they vanish as soon as I hover over them. There will be a row from 2 - 6 of them, they al vanish as I hover across the lot of them.

The problem I have is actually driving me nuts.I freshly installed Vista after formatting the drive and when I point to the only desktop icon which is the recycle bin I get this dialog asking if I want to send it to the recycle bin.No matter how many times I click on NO it won't go away and in my frustration I reboot the Laptop. have formatted the laptop several times and installed WIndows 7 and had the same problem. I also formatted and partitioned the drive and still had the same problem.I added a few more icons to the desktop and the same thing would happen if I pointed the mouse at them.
i have searched everywhere to do this , no site seemed to know how to get rid of it so i am helping the troubled with this problem, well not really a problem but an adjustment..it is a piece of cake. first right click on the desktop, go to arrange icons by ,uncheck lock web items to desktop(bang it's done).

Several unwanted desktop icons appeared recently (I think they come via Search2000 when IE is used). They won't right-click for deletion, nor will they allow themselves to be drop-dragged to the recycle bin. They don't appear in the desktop icon list when using the desktop cleanup feature.

Last Night I noticed when I was editing that some of my avi exports were all distorted and fragmented... So i figured "I havent EVER ran defrag (stupid me) on this hard drive maybe I should defrag it" So I looked into a defrag program called "diskeeper" I defragged C: (windows drive) and attempted to defrag D:.... I came to my comp and discovered an error that just said failure with the drive or something... After that I could not access (D I restarted, diskcheck did not work, and I dont want to do system restore... I posted on another websites forum and someone said I probably went over the 137GB limit... I think when I went over the 137GB limit, it possibly overflowed over some kind of boot files or something that lets windows read the disk i dont know (not that techincal with computers)So i looked into that, and I have an ATA card... and Windows NO service pack XP pro... Ive heard things about having a 48 bit bios or something... And after installing WINDOWS XP SP1... I try to get on my computer and i load windows
On my HP laptop, I can not move any of the desktop icons. They snap back to original position when released.
"Auto Arrange" is not checked. I have tried with "Align to Grid" both on and off. "Lock Web Items on Desktop" is not checked.
When i was on the net i clicked save web page as to see what would happen. Now all my icons on my desktop look like they are highlighted when they are not.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI wanted to change icons on my desktop. so i was looking for the function, went into folder options, then to file types tab, I clicked on file folders, then on advanced. Didn't select anything, clicked ok. After that every time I click on a folder it would open in acdsee. So I went back there, couldn't find a setting to readjust it, then added a new command to open folders in explorer. Now each folder I click on opens in a new window.

I read in a forum to just let it run it's course and eventually it would stop, or to do a bunch of stuff that I didn't understand. So, I ran all of my anti-virus' and ad aware and ccleaner and regcure and still I'm getting tons of popups but I was just going to be patient and let it run it's course. But now I keep getting this new message and when I close the message it ends up causing my taskbar and icons to go away. I was continually restarting my computer to get them back and thinking I would just not close the message in hopes that I could at least copy my documents over to another computer. I have not been able to do that so far and I'm freaking out. I use this computer for work. I am very new at this and this is my first post so please bear with me. I have tried multiple ways and the only way to access programs is by task manager.I currently haven't got a HijackThis Log which I will upload a.s.a.p. There are also no viruses and no hardrive errors so I'm pretty stumped on what I should do.
