Unknown File On Desktop - No File Type
Mar 28, 2008
I noticed a strange file on my desktop today. It has no filetype, it just says 8Ia03412 and is 70.3 MB. Is there anything I can do to find out what this is? All the programs I've tried won't open it.

i am a beginner and have tried to sort this out by searching the net for a cure - but every 'solution' seems to be a ropy sales gambit! When I try to download, instead of a dialog box choosing between 'Run' and 'Save', it's one offering me only 'Find' and 'Save'.Clicking 'Find' brings up the Windows File Association page stating:-"MIME Type: application/x-msdownload Description: UnKnownWindows does not recognize this MIME type." What do I need to do to get XP to recognise the file?

I recently bought a piece of audio hardware and after installing the software on my computer it now has duplicate files of all my .WAVs and .MP3s So for example, if I've got Section 78 - Dronodome.wav right below that is Section 78 - Dronodome.tqd
So if I open a folder with 50 files, there's 50 of these .tqd files right beside them.
I'm wondering if there's a way to set it in XP so that ALL .tqd files on my computer are 'hidden'.
For now I've just been holding down 'ctrl' and highlighting all the .tqd files in a folder, then right clicking and going to properties and setting them as hidden. Works great but there's no way I want to do this for every folder

I started using VLC Media Player a week or so ago because I was having (have always had) problems with the bloated Windows Media Player. But VLC has an odd problem. When I click on (e.g.) an .avi or .wmv file that came attached to an e-mail, I get an error message saying that "the file does not have a program associated with it to perform the action". But it DOES. I open Folder Options, and there it is. Now, the only action in the file type box is "Play". I notice that the one thing I open with WMP also has an "Open" as an action. I tried entering an Open action, and browsed to the VLC.exe file to put in the path, but it doesn't work.
The odd thing about the situation is that if I SAVE the attachment, then double-click it, it plays perfectly using VLC? Why will it play after I save it, but not when I click it as an e-mail attachment? I suspect it has something to do with having an "Open" action in the file type, but don't know how to enter same and have it work.

I have the following problem: Explorer doesn`t show any details for any media file type like artist or album, when choosing Details view. Additionally, clicking on file properties doesn`t show any info either, nor simple, nor in advanced view. The files are fine, and other software reads the media file info correctly, including WMP 11 and Winamp.

I just cleared off several spywares from my laptop (used SuperAntiSpyware and Smitfraudfix). Both worked without a hitch, but now I found 2 programs running in the background that are eating up my cpu speed. The first was utorrent which I uninstalled thru Add Remove Prog. The other is in the startup folder and will not let me turn it off or uninstal(documents&settings/user/applicationdata/microsoft/dtsc/22751). After reading several other posts on things to do before posting, I cleared the temp folders and ran hijackthis. The log is attached. What is this file and should I remove it, and if so how?

I have three (3) questions:1. When I'm closing down Windows XP (Home Edition), I continually receive an error showing "XtkU.exe" cannot. I have checked everywhere and cannot find out what this file is associated with. In addition I have gone through my system and purged all files associated with this executable from the registry. They pop right back in there with a system restart. I'm lost and confused now because I don't know what application uses this file.2. When closing down I receive the same Norton error message another user gets."ccaps.exe" at signoff. I will try and remove Norton to see if that works. 3. The user "quick switch" does not work any longer. I am not sure what is causing that either. Do you think it may be associated with the WtkU file?

I have a computer with an 80GB Hard Drive on it. This HDD had XP on a 50GB Partition, and Linux on a 30GB Partition, installed so I can choose between either operating system with Grub when I boot up. Well, I didn't want Linux anymore, so I used Norton Partition Magic to delete the Linux partition. Now, when I boot, GRUB loads and it just says 'unknown filesystem' and then 'GRUB rescue'.Obviously I didn't realize the GRUB started with Linux first, so now I'm screwed and can't boot.

I have a file on my Desktop which I can't delete. It was a file downloaded from a popular video site using a download program. This program delivers the files that initially have no extensions. You then choose what format (ie. wmv, avi, etc) that you want your video file in. The program then creates a converted file with the extension you have selected. So you finally end up with two files. The orignal file with no extension, and the file that you have converted. Lastly you delete the original downloaded file that has no extension. This has worked fine countless times. But some sort of glitch occured with one of these files a while back. I was able to create the converted file without a problem, but I can't delete the original extensionless file. Whenever I try to delete it, I get a message that the file can't be read. So I seem to have a permanent unwanted file on my Desktop. Can somebody please tell my how I can get rid of it.

I have this file (CAIR8RCN.) on my desktop which I can not get rid of. I don't know where it came from but it says "Error deleting file or folder - Cannot delete file: cannot read from source file or folder". I went in folder options and unchecked 'unhidden file extension' to see what kind of file it is but there is NO extension to this file. I also tried to delete the registered file type (it shows as blank extension) in Folder Options it wont let me do that either. Is there a way to get rid of this file? its just annoying sitting on my desktop. I've scanned with antivirus and spywares programs nothing helped.

I had a folder with all the Battlefield 2 (video game) installation files in it (Files on the installation CD(s.) I copied the files over from the cd to my computer to install the game because my cd-rom drive gets a little funky when i try to install things from it. So I put all the files in a folder on my desktop titled "BF2" The game was freezing up when i tried to loap a map so i decided to delete it. I uninstalled the game, deleted all the existing registry entries for the game and deleted the files in the BF2 folder (BF2 CD) but one file did not delete. The file is called "setup.ibt" I don't know why it won't delete it says "This file is being used by another person or program."

One of the best features of Win XP is to use any image from any image folder as your desktop background, wallpaper. For some reason this feature has stopped working and of course I have no idea why. I haven't changed any folder options or made any changes for that matter.
