WinXP uses Documents & Settings as the default folder to store downloads, Word files, etc. How can I make another folder the default, so that when I start to download a file, it automatically opens MyDocs New. I know I can change the defaults on Word, Excel. but I want to change WinXP.

I have 2 Drives now from re-installing, C:/ Drive and F:/ Drive, When i for example download and want to install it, it installs in on the F:/ Drive when i want to be installed on C:/ Drive. can get installs next to be on C:/ Drive and making C:/ Drive my default drive?

Ive downloaded mozilla firefox easily enough but I cant see how to make it default in place of IE. View 4 Replies View RelatedI was not able to install a new version of an engineering software package because something was left behind in the registry from the older version that I had removed. So I stupidly deleted a couple of registry keys that looked related to the software without documenting them (not just the tags, but the folders with the long alphanumeric strings). Now when I try to install the software it gives me an error. I ran system restore but the problem is still there (I don't think it restored the registry keys I deleted). Is there a way to install all of the default Windows SP2 registry keys or to download and reinstall SP2 in general?

I have found how to change the target folder when I go to Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer (change the Target in Properties), but that change did not affect the window that opens up when I right click on the Start menu and choose Explore.
View 6 Replies View RelatedAnd of course you can go in and change it to sort by "Type" or view as "Icons" or "Thumbnails" but as so as you close it it reverts, and the next time you open it it will be back to "List" view, arranged by "Name."Having it sorted by name is acceptable, so as i said it never really bothered me, but now one of my computers is sorting by "Modified" which is just not working for me.So basically I'm trying to find out if there is a way to change the default folder/file view in these basic Open, Save, Save As, etc dialog box's.
View 3 Replies View RelatedFirst things first: WinXP Pro, SP2 fully up to date but system restore is turned off.Trying to get Windows Explorer to export a directory tree to a text file the other day instead of doing it via command line, I messed something up and can't get it back. In Explorer, this is where I was: Tools >> Folder Options >> File Types >> File Folder >>I managed to insert the script that I wanted, but somewhere along the way I made a mistake and set it to Default. Now, whenever I click on an folder in Explorer it runs whatever is set as default. I can "Default" a lot of things (enqueue in Winamp, play in VLC Media Player, Find, etc) but none of them is the simple "Open" command. I looked around at a couple other things (namely "Folder" and Firefox) in the File Types box, and while they both have Open commands included, I can't "Edit" them to see what kind of command they are running.

That's fine, except that it pops up instantly whenever the mouse touches the edge (which is often for me). Is there a delay setting that will change it to delay so that I must hover a second before it activates? I tried the common add MenuShowDelay to HKCUControl PanelDesktop tweak and it doesn't affect it, just the start menu.

It asks me if I want to unhide just the folder or all files and subfolders, I do all files and sub folders. No problem.Then, when I reboot, I go to check it, and it's hidden again.Is there any way to stop Windows from automatically hiding it on restart?

What i want to do is to make my Hard Disk Drive as my My Music folder: Whenever you click or go into My Music, it will act as a shortcut and head straight to the Hard Disk Drive. The reason for this is so I have a Hard Disk Drive full of music while my original HDD has all the other stuff. Also My Music is a special windows folder so I would like to keep that if possible when doing this.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to reformat my daughters computer using the Windows XP Home Edition CD. But after installing a new CD Rom drive, the computer doesn't recognize the cd rom. I tired add new hardware wizard but when it gets to the part where I can pick the hardware I am trying to install it doesn't list any CD rom drives. I have even tried to change the boot sequence in the Bios settings. Still no luck. So I am hoping that there is a way for me to make a start up disk using the Original Windows XP Home Edition CD.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe New one is Drive 0 and OS is on partition 2 (Dell installation disk put in a FAT32 diag partition)Apart from my boot drive being F:.. I can live with it. However I got two options on booting up.. first one is Unidentified Operating System on C drive and underneath XP Windows HOME edition. after some experimentation.. I reversed the order and cut the timer down to 10 secs delay.
Problem is that sometimes I do not get the OS options dispalyed at all.. If that happens, I then get a black screen and a flashing white dash. On pressing the power button it soft re-boots and I get the options dispalyed with the default XP Home at the top and timer counting down to load it .. it then runs fine.. till the next crossed fingers start-up.
Anyway all my icons on my desktop are zoomed in, when i zoom them out the space between them is huge and on all applications everything is zoomed in. My start bar has text that is really zoomed in. Even the minimise, restore down and red cross in the top right corner of my browser are zoomed in. Any ideas on how I can make this smaller. ( I have already tried changing my resolution).

View 12 Replies View RelatedSay you have a favorite file that you like to listen to with your media player. With Winamp for example, when you start the program, the last media you were listening is scrolled along the bottom, but you must hit the play button to get it to play. If you listen constantly to one thing, you can make it load automatically. You can either make a copy of the shortcut and edit it, or you can edit the current shortcut. (If you ever change your mind, just delete the part you added.) Right click on the shortcut. Select properties. In the target box, after the shortcut, add the name of the file to play. For example, the default target to Winamp is "C:Program FilesWinampwinamp.exe". Add the name of your file after that. Example: "C:Program FilesWinampwinamp.exe" http://live.cobbscanner.com:8000 /Prefetch: 1
Note three things: A) you just need one space between start program and file. (It just shows up as a hyperlink here, it will not on your shortcut. B) The "/Prefetch: 1" at the end is not necessary, it just causes the program to load faster (another great tweak I found here.) C)The name scrolling along the bottom of your media player may not be the actual file name. To find it for sure (at least in Winamp), when the media player screen is up, right click the title's scrolling banner. View file info. It is the name at the top of the screen.
Small irritating issue here, I have a pc running WindowsXP Pro and every time the system is rebooted I get the System Configuration Utility box come up, the one saying, "You have used the System Config Utility to make changes to the way windows starts.etc." I have seen this before and am use to it as I use the utility to stop alot of apps. The difference this time is that I cannot get the box from appearing after each startup. I have checked the box that says "Don't show this message or launch the system configuration utility when windows starts", but it shows up every time. I have also tried to remove this from the registry.

Now when I try and download something through a link, windows downloader starts and then an error message comes up saying "Documents and Settingsxx xxLocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent. IE55FV3XLWE [file name] is missing. There is no such folder in my temporary internet files folder yet I can't create or create in local settings and drag and drop. I can download if I save target as but would rather repair the problem.
