File Opens With Wrong Program - Bad File Icon In Explorer View

Aug 3, 2007

I recently had to do a system restore and now my .jpg and jpeg files have a bad file icon. They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.

windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago

Saved Wrong File, Closed Program Without Saving Right File ?

Apr 22, 2005

I was doing some detailed drawings in photoshop, and I also had a generic photo up in photoshop as well. I went to save my drawings, but apparently accidentally saved the photo under the drawins name and then closed the program. This morning I discovered the bad news. Is there a way to get that drawing back? I do not know if it was ever saved before.

File Types Icon Are Wrong

Mar 3, 2005

For some reason my file types for MP3 which are associated with Winamp, have the icon for Nero Show Time. Doesn't matter what I do, I can't seem to get the icon to switch to a Winamp icon in my music folder. I can switch the icon in Options and File Types to the winamp icon, but when I go to my music folder the icon is still for Nero Show Time. Even after I reboot it's still the same.

Wrong Icon Displaying For Certain File Types

I've got XP Pro SP2. My JPE, JPEG, JPG files are displaying the Netscape icon next to them even though I have gone to Windows Explorer Tools Folder Options and set it up so that Photoshop opens each of these file types. The Photoshop icon is displayed in the Folder Options as it should be, and the files do open in Photoshop, but if I go to File > Open in Photoshop, all of these files have the Netscape icon. How do I make it so the Photoshop icon is displayed for these?

Explorer - Change The Icon For The File Folder

Nov 6, 2007

I have a laptop running Windows XP Home Edition. I just got into a little trouble with my explorer. Whenever I double-click on a folder, it opens in a new window, not in the same one. I even changed "folder option>>general>>open each folder in same window" but with no result. I was actually trying to change the icon for the 'file folder' and I dont really know what I did (went to 'folder options>>file types>>file folder>>advanced>>change icon....but I changed the icon back to the original icon again) , but from that time, I am unable to change it back to open folders in the same window. In the 'actions' (folder options>>file types>>file folder>>advanced) section (after i changed the icon) all I could see was a 'find' option. It was opening 'search' window every time I double clicked on a folder, so I created a new action called open and selected 'explorer' as the application to use and then set this 'open' as default. Although it solved the initial problem of opening the 'search' window, it still opens every folder in a new window.

NTFS - File System Pointing To The Wrong Files

Apr 21, 2008

A few days ago I noticed that when I tried to play a video file that I downloaded with VLC, it actually opened another video file on that hard drive (500GB Seagate, partition G: used for video files) instead of the one I selected. It had played fine earlier, so something must have happened to cause the file system to point to the wrong file.

I didn't pay too much attention to it at first, but then this morning I noticed that this wasn't the only occurrence of this weird error. When I tried to play a podcast episode with iTunes which is located on another partition and another hard drive (320GB Seagate, partition H: used for music files) it *also* was pointing to another music file on that same hard drive. Because this struck me as very odd I tried opening other files on these partitions. Some opened the right file, some opened wrong ones. I've done a chkdsk on both partitions. On the H: partition it did fix some errors, but G: seemed to be fine. Nevertheless, the problem remained. I've tried to google for this problem, but I'm having trouble finding a good search term. I've never had a problem like this before, so I'm unfamiliar with the terminology that might be used to document this problem.

New Creating File Doesn't Appear - Filmstrip View

Sep 2, 2009

I gotta be missing something basic, but this is just a real nuisance for me. Would appreciate any thoughts. Software is XP SP3.I have been using XP to view/edit several subfolders of jpegs stored in a Kodaks Folder. I prefer to usthe "filmstrip view". I am able to rename file name from something like 101_2900 to kidname whatever, but the new name never appears onscreen unless I either force a F5 screen refresh or back out and re-enter the file folder. I can probably edit photo names in Corel Paint Shop Pro or another program, but this is just driving me nuts.Sometimes when I turn on the computer and decide to rename files, the new names appear immediately without refreshes, ect. Just wonder if I am missing a file property setting or something basic that I haven't noticed.

Change The Default Folder / File View

Nov 16, 2007

And of course you can go in and change it to sort by "Type" or view as "Icons" or "Thumbnails" but as so as you close it it reverts, and the next time you open it it will be back to "List" view, arranged by "Name."Having it sorted by name is acceptable, so as i said it never really bothered me, but now one of my computers is sorting by "Modified" which is just not working for me.So basically I'm trying to find out if there is a way to change the default folder/file view in these basic Open, Save, Save As, etc dialog box's.

Boot.ini Can't Working - Opens File In Notepad

Aug 5, 2008

Having a problem with booting into safe mode on my SONY WinXP Pro computer, I searched on the internet for a solution....This opens the boot.ini file in Notepad.

- One line should end with "/fastdetect" (NOT "/fastdetect /sos"). Copy that line.
- Paste the line you just copied below the original line. Change "WINDOWS=Microsoft XP Professional" to "WINDOWS="Safe Mode" and add the following text to the end of the line: /safeboot:minimal /sos /bootlog
- Save the file and click OK to exit the dialog boxes. Note: If you named the Windows XP installation folder something other than WINDOWS when you installed XP, that name will appear instead of WINDOWS in step 6.

Before following the instructions, I created a backup copy of my boot.ini file. I then proceeded to do as instructed. Unfortunately, I needed access to the internet which this didn't allow for. I then copied the origional boot.ini information back to my boot.ini file in Notepad and saved it. However, when I boot, it still goes into the basic Safe Mode.

INDD File Opens Read-only / ZIP Files Suddenly Open In BG

Dec 9, 2007

One of my co-workers has been having this odd problem and I'm not sure what to make of it. On occasion, she goes to open an INDD (Adobe InDesign) file which is stored on our Windows 2003 server, and it opens as "read-only." She opens the file to make changes and can't because InDesign won't let her save any changes to the file. There's no apparent reason for this - she has full access to the file, the file's read-only bit has not been set, and there's plenty of space on the server. What she usually does to get around it is to "Save As." over the file she's just opened. That normally works. On occasion this doesn't work and she has to "Save As." to her desktop, then "Save As." back over the original. It's a pain for her at the very least.

What's odd is that I've checked the "open files" list on that Windows 2003 server when she gets the error. Her workstation suddenly opens a whole handful of zip files located on the same Windows 2003 server (some of our digital artwork comes in zip packages). They are opened in read mode only (READ, not READ-WRITE).When she does her "save as." and gets past the error, the read locks/handles on the zip files are closed also. The ZIP thing sounded suspicious to me and I scanned her computer (as well as the ZIPs) for viruses. Nothing came up. I have since even re-installed the entire operating system (Windows XP Professional, SP2) and still the same behavior. Now what's funny is it's only InDesign (CS). All of her other apps (even other Adobe apps) seem to behave correctly.

I've even inspected her network wiring and replaced her aged CAT5 with brand-new CAT5e, which needed to be done anyway. (we run gigabit). Net connections are solid (she's only 20-30 feet away from my office where all the office switches are located, which makes things easier). No one else in the office has the problem, and her computer (and software installed) is comparable to everyone else's, at least in her department.
Our software is too old to get support from Adobe (upgrading to CS3 isn't financially feasible at the moment but not sure an upgrade would help if I don't know what the problem is), and I've tried the official Adobe forums with no luck. I didn't get very far - most of the people on that forum aren't PC/NET tech experts, just Adobe users (for the most part). It seems that way, anyway.I guess I'm running out of ideas. What should I do to figure out what's going on here?

Persistent Transparent Icon Like File

Dec 25, 2006

A few weeks ago, I clicked on an attachment, and nothing happened in the foreground. However, now I have an icon (zero bytes) on the Desktop that defies removal. When I try to delete it I get Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk. Ive booted up from several PE bootables and tried using various explorers but even they give the same windows message. Ive dropped to console several times and drilled to the Desktop, but it is invisible. So it is a figment of XP. The icon is named What NOT to do with a housecat. It cannot be renamed or pushed into another folder. Very weird. This is a nice learning experience. I do a bit of computer repair so I run into weird things all the time. The computer behaves normally in every way. XP Home, 3.3 gHz., 1 gig. ram, etc. Im sorry to have deleted the offend-ing email, as it may have yielded good evidence. Ive used Resplendent Registar, to find evidence of it in the registry. Even went to the icon nameplace, and there was nothing of importance. Rootkit Revealer reports: zone identifier hidden from Windows API. (26 bytes).Blacklight rootkit prog. found no hidden items. Ive tried to use several linux bootables, but they do not work with my SATA drives. So the computer is fine, just one little annoyance. But I would like to learn from this in case I see it again in the future. Also, other people at the hospital opened it up and whatever it was, didnt cause an issue.
