View 14 RepliesHaving a problem with booting into safe mode on my SONY WinXP Pro computer, I searched on the internet for a solution....This opens the boot.ini file in Notepad.
- One line should end with "/fastdetect" (NOT "/fastdetect /sos"). Copy that line.
- Paste the line you just copied below the original line. Change "WINDOWS=Microsoft XP Professional" to "WINDOWS="Safe Mode" and add the following text to the end of the line: /safeboot:minimal /sos /bootlog
- Save the file and click OK to exit the dialog boxes. Note: If you named the Windows XP installation folder something other than WINDOWS when you installed XP, that name will appear instead of WINDOWS in step 6.
Before following the instructions, I created a backup copy of my boot.ini file. I then proceeded to do as instructed. Unfortunately, I needed access to the internet which this didn't allow for. I then copied the origional boot.ini information back to my boot.ini file in Notepad and saved it. However, when I boot, it still goes into the basic Safe Mode.
This started happening a few months ago, & I have just been living with it, but now I'm very tired of it. When ever I boot, or restart my computer, the startup folder automatically opens on the desktop. Can someone tell me how to stop this from happening? Also recently, whenever I open a Microsoft program, Word, Excell Office Project tries to load. I have to cluck Cancel several times to stop it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAlright, so I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop that runs Windows XP. It's a rather old computer, a few years old, but when I got it the specs were on the high end. Not top notch, par se, but certainly good. Now, however, I have a problem with it: It is agonizingly slow (I should, perhaps, also point out that it wasn't nearly this slow when I first got it...).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently had to do a system restore and now my .jpg and jpeg files have a bad file icon. They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.
windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago

Trying to go into msconfig and it is acting strange. I click start, run, msconfig, ok. The msconfig screen opens but as soon as I move my mouse the entire box just leaves the screen. Regedit is doing the same thing. Cannot find any information on this in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is new and just started a few weeks ago. Once in a while I'll doubleclick the "My Computer" icon and all 5 of my desktop icons will open their windows. I also noticed my type-ahead launcher won't respond to its hotkey when this happens. It doesn't feel like that's the problem though. The bad behavior won't stop until I reboot. The first time this happened I tried a logoff to see if that would be enough to fix it but, my machine wouldn't recognize my password. The password is recognized on restart.Restart has been my only fix so far. Does this sound like anything to anyone?

View 4 Replies View RelatedComputer is suddenly running chk disk at bootup - anyone know why that would suddenly start to happen. I don't know how to even enable it - and really want to disable it. How do I do that? No errors are reported when it finishes. Also if I go to error checking when windows finally boots, it won't run because certain system files cannot be accessed.
