can anyone tell me how to overcome a boot problem.When starting a computer that has not been used for some time it fails to boot from any disk i.e. floppy, hard drive or cd.It gets so far then this message appears,corrupted file dac2w2k.sys even with Windows XP setup floppies.It gets to the GeForce splash screen then just keeps repeating to this point.

it had multiple files showing bad, so rather than chase them one at a time for an unknowable number of days, I decided to create a new directory and install fresh copy of WinXP Pro
That looked like it was going to work but after being up on the initial boot, wobbly, for about 45 minutes, something caused a freeze, and I was toasted after that. Same routine again: bootup, get error "Windows failed to start because the following file is missing or corrupt"
Computer is suddenly running chk disk at bootup - anyone know why that would suddenly start to happen. I don't know how to even enable it - and really want to disable it. How do I do that? No errors are reported when it finishes. Also if I go to error checking when windows finally boots, it won't run because certain system files cannot be accessed.

So im attempting to reformat but even with my xp disk in i still get the same error followed by a choice to restore previous settings, and two other choices which all end in a blue screen.Does the hard drive need to be or Is there anyway i can boot up in dos to reformat?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy computer is a Dell Inspiron 6000 running Microsoft XP Home. My machine did not ship with a XP Home setup CD so I cannot follow the windows prompt. I have heard about dell system restore CDs, however I'm not sure if one came with my machine, and if so where it is. If this is what I need can an ISO be downloaded anywhere online? I do know that there is some type of partition on my HD, however I'm not sure exactly what it consists of or how to find out.In case anyone asks, I cannot boot windows in safe mode. If possible I would like to try to repair this problem without a complete reformat and reinstall as my data is only partially backed up. Additionally I have considered the possibility that this issue is the result of a HD crash, however I am not sure how I would go about testing this. Lastly if a reformat and re-install is necessary is there anyway to backup "My Documents" without starting windows?

But it was corrupted in the middle because of error "The file 'asms' on the Windows Professional XP CD-Rom is needed". I couldn't go on. The installation is halted. And I couldn't login to Windows any more. I have a very big problem that I'd like to ask you all here. the HD now is readonly, it's NTFS so very few File manager app is used to see it (only Volka in Hiren's Boot CD could do that.
View 14 Replies View RelatedThings worked well until I connected a USB 2.0 Sony DVD burner [ owned by an associate ]. With PC & Sony burner turned off, I connected the Sony burner. Booted to Windows. Turned on Sony. Windows identified mass storage device & Sony burner. I re-started, and can't get beyond the Win XP Startup menu. Suggestions other than FFR [ fdisk, format, re-install ] and booting with the CD [ yes, I have an official Microsoft Win XP SP1 disk ] to run the repair will be appreciated. Also, I'm not interested in Linux, MAC or any other OS at this time. Soon, perhaps, but not tonight.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded SP3 and I didn't have SP1a so I had to get installed that first in order to installed SP3 over it. Since then I am experiencing this problem with the above thread i386/kdcom.dll file is corrupted when I try to set up with booting with Windows XP professional CD and I do not have floppy drive to boot it with set up or repair floppies of NT operating system. Actually this problem happened due to ADOBE updates every now and then pops up to install when I do it says failed to install with reason "either your computer is running in Safe mode or windows setup is corrupted and tells me to reset it but it won't let me set it up or boot the disc.
I already have checked the CMOS bios and the prime master is the hard disc and secondary master is the CD ROM. Otherwise my PC is running fine with proper speed Also it won't let me uninstall my older version of ADOBE 9.2 program from AD REMOVE list. Please tell me what to do. The error code it gives me while trying to boot is 4096 also says INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupted.
The system can be restored by using the Startup CD and pressing R for recover, but I do not have any cd. The only one I have it the recover cd, but it is my understanding that if I use the recovery cd that I will erase everything from my computer and I can not do this.I tried to read the other threads about the same problem, but to be honest I do not understand them and I just do not have the startup cd - maybe it is the same as the recovery cd?

View 12 Replies View RelatedMy CD ROM/DVD player recently stopped working on my Omitech computer. From My Computer - I can't see the drive anymore. In the device manager - it has a yellow exclamation mark on it. I tried updating the driver but the message was that the software was already the best match. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it says a file is missing or corrupt. I bought a new external CD ROM - but have the exact same problem with it. I went to Run and put in sfc /scannow and there were problems that maybe could be fixed - if only it could read the XP CD - then it could fix the CD ROM. But it can't read the CD because of the problem with the CD ROM. (a whole in my bucket story.) So - how can I fix the problem if it wants a CD to fix the problem but the CD ROM is not working to read the CD?

But now it boots soooooooooooooo slow about 1-2 mins but once up it is fine. It shuts down fina as well. Done all scans virus adaware etc so the machine is now clean. So how do I speed up the boot.

View 2 Replies View Relatedfirst i get the HP blue screen. I tried F1, but i dont see my hard drive in the boot menu. I followed some steps in Hp's web site- took the cpu apart and unplugged both hard drives from the motherboard, plugged them back in. when i restarted ,i got the HP screen and then windows started to load up. After a few seconds the HP screen came back up and then the black screen: sk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. I also noticed that pressing F10 for system recovery does nothing.

I have 2 internal IDE HDD's and an external IcyBox USB2 self powered enclosure with a Maxtor 160GB 7200RPM HDD in it. The external HDD is divided into 4x40GB partitions.
Running CHECKDSK on the internal drives is no problem but when I try it on a partition on the external one it goes through Phase1, Phase 2, sometimes reaches Phase 3 then hangs and if left PC switches off. Second time it hung looked at Performance tab in Task Manager and CPU was at 100% and I could hear CPU fan revving up, obviously CPU was overheating and shutting down.Looking in Event Viewer there are a large number of disk errors. Properties says: "The device,DeviceHarddisk2D, has a bad block".Clicking on the MS link tells me:the disk itself failing or the electronics on the IcyBox
enclosure, the data on the disk is accessible and readable? Are there any known problems with this type of external HDD? The problem only came to light when I tried to merge partitions on external HDD using Partition Magic and it couldn't be done because of errors.
I'm running windows XP a dell desktop that's a few years old. I was away from home for six months, and before i left i powered my computer down--and now that i'm home, it fails to boot. When i power it on, a few seconds after it will begin to continually beep. they're long, but spaced apart.. after a while, it will just hold the beep as a solid tone. It will normally get loading screen of windows XP (the black one that has the bar and shows the windows logo), and that's when the screen will just go blank and it holds the beep.
I don't get any errors or messages during the startup, and if i enter the bios settings as it's beginning to boot, it will not begin to beep or turn off.
I am a new user to this site and I am moderately computer literate and have a basic knowledge of my system.
It's a Gateway PC running on Windows XP with a Pentium 4 Processor, as for the base specs I'm not quite sure, but I know they are lower than my laptops specs are.Just today when I got home from work my parents had started to worry about the PC, they would start it up and then wait for it to boot as usual, but this time it started to turn on and wouldn't do anything from there, it would just sit at the loading screen and not even get to the loading bar or welcome screen it's self.So I tried a couple of reboots to see if that would help and it did not, so I picked up my OS install disc to force a reboot or to repair the system, I can restart it but it does the same thing even with the OS disc inside the tower, it doesn't even read it at all.I'm not too sure what else to do at this point, if there are any other suggestions please provide them, if you have further questions to ask me, I'll try and answer them to the best of my ability.
