Dvd Burner Turned Off System - Boot To Fails
Jul 10, 2005
Things worked well until I connected a USB 2.0 Sony DVD burner [ owned by an associate ]. With PC & Sony burner turned off, I connected the Sony burner. Booted to Windows. Turned on Sony. Windows identified mass storage device & Sony burner. I re-started, and can't get beyond the Win XP Startup menu. Suggestions other than FFR [ fdisk, format, re-install ] and booting with the CD [ yes, I have an official Microsoft Win XP SP1 disk ] to run the repair will be appreciated. Also, I'm not interested in Linux, MAC or any other OS at this time. Soon, perhaps, but not tonight.

After installing Service Pack 2, Explorer no longer sees my DVD burner nor my CD burner. I have tried going to an earlier system restore point but that has not worked. You can see the drives in Device Manager but there are yellow exclamation points beside each. I have tried un-installing and letting windows re-enstall and it does, but still have the same problem after it gets through. When I try un-installing service pack 2 I get messages saying if I un-install, a lot of my programs may not run correctly. I am running a Gateway 700 series 1.8 mhz pentium 4 processor, 512 mgs ram, with 80 gig harddrive, windows XP home. I have owned a computer since windows 3.1 and have tried all I know. Can someone please help me? I am just before formatting my hard drive and starting all over!Just for assurance I opened the computer case and checked to make sure the wires were properly seated to both drives and the mother board.

I'm running windows XP a dell desktop that's a few years old. I was away from home for six months, and before i left i powered my computer down--and now that i'm home, it fails to boot. When i power it on, a few seconds after it will begin to continually beep. they're long, but spaced apart.. after a while, it will just hold the beep as a solid tone. It will normally get loading screen of windows XP (the black one that has the bar and shows the windows logo), and that's when the screen will just go blank and it holds the beep.
I don't get any errors or messages during the startup, and if i enter the bios settings as it's beginning to boot, it will not begin to beep or turn off.

I am a new user to this site and I am moderately computer literate and have a basic knowledge of my system.
It's a Gateway PC running on Windows XP with a Pentium 4 Processor, as for the base specs I'm not quite sure, but I know they are lower than my laptops specs are.Just today when I got home from work my parents had started to worry about the PC, they would start it up and then wait for it to boot as usual, but this time it started to turn on and wouldn't do anything from there, it would just sit at the loading screen and not even get to the loading bar or welcome screen it's self.So I tried a couple of reboots to see if that would help and it did not, so I picked up my OS install disc to force a reboot or to repair the system, I can restart it but it does the same thing even with the OS disc inside the tower, it doesn't even read it at all.I'm not too sure what else to do at this point, if there are any other suggestions please provide them, if you have further questions to ask me, I'll try and answer them to the best of my ability.

one day I turned on my pc and had no video, thought my on board went bad. Got a video card, didnt work. Decided to try the on board again, worked. Now it said there was a boot error at drive B. I didnt think I had a drive mapped to B.I ran a DOS boot disk and did a fdisk and it said there were no fixed drives, so I figured that it was a bad HD, got a new HD, changed it, still a problem. I have to start out with the DOS disk then I can pop in a Win2K boot disk and tryed to install. Cant find the setup or install file on Boot Disk 1. Wont boot from CD to install 2K.

When the comp is first turned on, everything powers up as normal then it stops at the first boot screen prior to the memory test and powers off the monitor. The computer stays on but does nothing.
The system specs are as follows:
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1
Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106 (IE 6.0 SP1)
DirectX 4.09.00.0902 (DirectX 9.0b)
CPU Type AMD Athlon XP, 2000 MHz (15 x 133) 2400+
Motherboard Gigabyte GA-7VT600(-L)
Motherboard Chipset VIA VT8377 Apollo KT600
System Memory 512 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)
BIOS Type Award Modular (07/03/03)
Video Adapter NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X (64 MB)
Monitor Benq FP547 [15" LCD] (1336662)
The problem is intermittent and sometimes the computer will randomly shut down.
I initially thought this was video card problem so I have swapped out the video card for a known good one with no success.
Next thing I thought was overheating, I checked the system temps in the bios after a good boot and noticed the CPU temp was on 90 degrees Celsius, I thought this was extremely hot so I cleaned the heat sink and fan and the temp has dropped to the figures below:
Motherboard 38 C (100 F)
CPU 73 C (163 F)
Aux 45 C (113 F)
Seagate ST380011A 43 C (109 F)
The CPU temp still seems hot, however the system will run for days without a problem then out of the blue fail to start.
I then suspected a power supply problem and still suspect that this may be the culprit.
Once the computer has failed to boot, it will not boot fully again until the PSU power lead has been removed briefly.
If I unplug the power cable momentarily the system boots fine on the next boot, which seems to indicate something is being reset when the power is shut off totally.
Voltage Values:
350w PSU
CPU Core 1.68 V
+3.3 V 3.25 V
+5 V 4.73 V
+12 V 12.80 V
+5 V Standby 4.89 V
DIMM VTT 1.33 V
I have also run sea-tools which has detected errors on the hard drive, but I believe the problem is occurring before the system checks the hard drive.
I am receiving no bios beep error codes.
I am leaning toward PSU replacement,

So I rebooted my pc after it crashed the other day and it keeps rebooting. gets to mup.dll(I think!) and reboots.Took the HDD out and put it into an enclosure to copy files but am having trouble with some, mainly my email folder in local settings. As its a sony with recovery disks, i cant just run an over the top installation of xp as it will delete everything. With the enclosure i keep getting errors such as file path is too deep. I hope this is just a power issue with the enclosure and not that my hdd has died. Its only 11 months old. I need to recover these files.

i have a HP Pavilion laptop [dv5117ci] with factory load XP Pro SP2and factory restore discs. the system became corrupted by a failed Win update.
it had multiple files showing bad, so rather than chase them one at a time for an unknowable number of days, I decided to create a new directory and install fresh copy of WinXP Pro
That looked like it was going to work but after being up on the initial boot, wobbly, for about 45 minutes, something caused a freeze, and I was toasted after that. Same routine again: bootup, get error "Windows failed to start because the following file is missing or corrupt"

MacAfee automatically updated and said it needed to restart. So I hit restart as nothing was running at the time. When the computer tried to restart it took FOREVER, at least 5 minutes. When it finally did come up, none of the links work. I treid to get into System Restore, it said System Restore had been turned off. News to me I never turn System Restore off. No access to the internet. Go to printers it shows no printers installed. Most programs, if you try to run them they either don't open, or open and close abruptly, or with McAfee it opens with nothing inside the box. Or if you try to do something like turn the System Restore on, the program stops responding. I actually did a registry edit to turn it on, but it still won't let me set a new restore point, and it says there are no old restore points. Basically the computer is totally unusable. So now I boot in SAFE MODE. Doesn't do much for me but allows me to look around. So I reboot in SAFE MODE Directory Services which says the drive is clean and the computer now works great in this Directory Services mode.

I recently somehow ended up with virusheat on my computer, but the real problem came when i got rid out it. I first tried using spybot and adaware to delete the virus, but that didn't seem to work and i eventually just tried to uninstall it. When I clicked uninstall, it seemed to also delete many of my other programs and scambled the locations of many links. now many programs, like mozilla, doesn't work. Everytime i tried to do something, i got the BSOD. I eventually got rid of Virusheat and the BSODs with malwarebytes', but I still do not have all of the stuff Virusheat deleted. So that when i tried to system restore my comp. That doesn't work, even in safe mode; I just get the "no changes have been made to my system" thing after the system restore reboots my comp. I don't have Norton on my comp, as far as i know (I can't really cheack because search stopped working). My system restore is definetly on and i have many different restore points prior to the virus. I need to know if there is a way to return my comp to the state it was in, before the infection

I am running Windows XP, and a number of system upgrades were downloaded and being installed during shutdown. Unfortunately, the power got turned off partway through this, and now the computer won't boot up. I tried putting the Windows CD in to run a repair installation, but it still gets stuck.I get the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, but when I press a key there are two lines of text that appear and disappear too quickly for me to read them, and then it goes to a blank screen with flashing cursor, and doesn't do anything else.

It has an MSI board, Celeron D cedermill at 2.2ghz. Western Digital 160gb sata drive. I don't think any of that really matters, but heres the problem. When trying to install windows XP, after loading all the drivers it needs and it gets to 'starting windows' a blue screen comes up saying something like 'your system was turned off to prevent further damage. The hard drive works fine in another system, and so doesn't installing xp. I put the hard drive with xp installed. It tries to load, same screen. But it installs windows 2000 without glitch.

It started yesterday when I got the DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has failed window hundreds of times. I managed to stop that by deleting it from regedit which I did back-up. All the other problems I've been having are still here though. When I start windows, before the login screen, I get an error message from spoolsv.exe. After I login, I get my desktop backround and mouse pointer but nothing else. I run task manager and am able to run explorer from there. Everything starts up but many progams fail, most of which I have no idea what they are. After visiting many sites regarding the DrWatson problem, I downloaded many anti-virus programs such as Spy Sweeper and Spybot but they fail when I go to run them. I've tried free online scans but they stop in the middle of scanning. No problems with my browser, the scans just stop. I would love to simply re-install windows but my CD drive won't open, not even when I use the pinhole. System Restore fails when I run it

We are running into a problem where multiple services on a Windows XP SP2 system fail to run. This is happening on different brands of systems at different customer locations, and so far has eluded our ability to detect a pattern. The symptom is a user complaining that an application fails to start or to work correctly. When we examine the system, a number of services have stopped or failed to start, with no reason given. We haven't systematically documented what services failed to start (the list changes when the screen is refreshed), but the list published at seems to be typical. The workaround I have used is to go through the services that are not running, set each of them to automatically restart on first and second failure (a tedious task), then restart the system. This has usually fixed the problem for that user, but doesn't explain what is causing the failure to begin with.

I've got this old mobo Abit VT7. I want to install XP on it. However, the XP disc doesn't recognize SATA hard drives. So I downloaded official SATA driver from the Abit website http://tinyurl.com/kua5qz and tries to slipstream my XP disc following the instructions set forth here http://tinyurl.com/37anvn . I am not too clear how to incorporate the drivers from the official drivers, but Nlite seems to be able to find the drivers once I pointed it to the top unzipped driver directory, and I selected the XP folder for it. However, the newly created XP disc still fails to recognize the SATA hard drives. Alternatively, I believe I could have a boot floppy which would load the drivers in, then I launch the setup in the XP installation CD via command line. But I don't know how to create a boot disc which has those SATA drivers in.
