Mapped Network Drives Without Connecting The Network Cable?
Oct 13, 2009
I need to have network drive on my Windows XP computer. In order for a software to work, there needs to exist a network drive, named N, existing on my PC. Since there's not a second PC to link to, what I did was to created a directory named est on the same PC , share it out, and then, map a network drive, named N, to it. When my PC has an Ethernet cable connected to a switch, Windows XP will see that N drive (existing on the same PC). The moment I disconnect that Ethernet cable from the switch, the N drive is gone. Is there a way to have a mapped network drive on XP (as mentioned above), without the need to have a network cable connecting that PC to a switch?

I connect to my network drive through a VPN. The problem comes when I restart my computer - the mapped drive is missing and I have to start all over again.
This same problem exists if I use another user account too. How can this be fixed.

I have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers. It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".

For some reason on my XP machine, it recently started opening minesweeper when I try to click on a network or mapped drive (and won't open the mapped drive). I've tried dropping and reconnecting - and it's still doing it.

My office has a number of mapped network drives for each user which, unfortunately, start at drive letter F.Each time a USB device is used on the computer it is also automatically assigned the drive letter F (presuming that C is hard disk and D and E are CD/DVD drives). This has to be manually changed from within Disk Management.Apparently this is as a result of physical drives taking precedent over the mapped network drives. Is there any workaround for this other than moving the mapped drive letters further along in the alphabet? - this is not really a feasible solution at this time.

I work at a school district here in FL and we have come across a strange issue. When someone logs into windows, sometimes our kix script will not run and the network drives will not map no matter how many times we log off and log back in. The only solution we can find is disabling the IEEE 802.1x setting on the authentication tab of the local area connection. It doesn't seem to be happening with all of our systems and seems to be sporadic. As soon as we disable this setting and log back in the drives will map. Any idea why this is happening and anyone have a solution? Our PC's are running Windows XP Pro w/SP2 and our servers are Win 2k3.

I have 3 computers on wired network and have to move one computer to another room. It would much more convenient to use the existing cable which would have to be coupled in two places, however I have been told that although this can be done it is not recommended, and have also been informed that it would be ok to use couplings.I would like to know if they are ok to use and what type to use.

I recently installed verizon VZ Access Manager to use my blackberry as a tethered modem. Since then, I have noticed that neither my wireless nor my wired LAN connections appear in Network Connections. My connections work fine. I am using a wired LAN connection to send this. However, the connection does not appear in Windows Network Connections. According to what I've read, the connection should be automatically entered there.

have a new installation of WinXP SP1. When i try to browse any folder, the explorer either hangs for a long time or crashes occasionally. This happens when my machine is connected to network. If my machine is off the network, it shows the folder contents immediately. I removed all the network shares connected to my machine and still the problem persists.

First of all, I would like to say that I am an IT tech, so there's no need to explain everything in details. I'm posting here, because I'm having trouble with some hardware compatibility that happens only with Windows XP Service Pack 2c , and not SP2.I might as well post this in the Hardware sub forum.According to Microsoft, there's nothing that was added to the OS, other than a new range of license keys. But for what I can see, there's definately something different other than that in the OS.Here are some specs of the systems I am using.

I have several network drives. I am on a laptop and whenever I disconnect from my dock (wired connection)it automatically closes any open folders connected to a network drive. My wireless kicks in a few seconds later, and I have to go through the trouble reopening them all!Is there a registry setting I can set to prevent this?If I turn the PC on outside of work, it doesn't connect these drives, and thus will prevent them from showing even when I go in and connect to the network. I have to connect them MANUALLY every time.

I have a gateway 6520 gz laptop with IE6 and XPHE, I 'm on a network with two computers and use NETWORK MAGIC for the network, when I turn the laptop on it wants to display {the page cannot be displayed} instead of going online! Then NETWORK MAGIC pops-up and says {YOU ARE NOW CONNECTED} then I have to manually turn on IE6 button to go online, almost like the page {the page cannot be displayed} wants to come up first instead of the connection?

My network adapter does not appear in Device Manager, until I "Show hidden devices". And then it appears as a "Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC", whereas I actually have a D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 adapter. Furthermore, I get no icons (at all) in the Network Communications window. So if I want to change any settings of my LAN, for example, I can't, because I can't select the LAN icon or right-click on it. The LAN is working though. The current driver for the Realtek adapter which is listed is a MS driver.

when I browse "My Network Places", the browsing is so incredibly slow. It takes a long while when you click one icon in the “My Network Places” for that to open up and go to the next directory or when just first displaying the computers in “My Network Places”, it goes so slow.
I use Windows Workgroup on the LAN to share out internet. Everything else, other than browsing the network, works great. The internet browses nice and fast.
This morning I opened My Network Places while my pc was still loading all the programs at start-up and "My Network Places" was fast. After a few minutes it was back to normal low pace. Now I guess it is something running on my pc slowing it down. Is it maybe to do with XP Service Pack 2? Before installing SP2 the network browsing on my pc is fast, after installing SP2, it is slow. Other computers on the network without SP2 browse the network quite fast.
All the pc's on the network has XP Pro.

We have a Windows 2003 server that contains files that need to be accessed by a collection of XP Pro clients. We initially set up mapped drives that connected these client computers to the server using a set of security credentials that matched user accounts on the server. These mapped drives "map" when the client logs into XP. Since the local login credentials on the client PCs don't match those on the server, we use "Connect using a different username" to use credentials residing in the Server userbase.

They do show up in Computer Management. I can even assign drive letter there. But they will not show up in Eplorer even after I assign the drive letters.CD ROM and Hard disks all show up. Sandisk media player shows up too. But not USB drives. I have seen several threads with similar issues.

I have a Win2000 network and now have around 20 new XP Pro machines on it.Every user has at least one drive mapped to one of our servers to store files Every so often, for no reason that I have figured out, when trying to access a mapped drive it hangs up and you are asked for a username and password. This happens to me with my perminatly mapped drives and new ones I make on the fly. No username or password seems to work, and the easiest way to get it to work correctly is to reboot. This only happens with the XP machines.
