Unable To Setup Network Wizard

Feb 17, 2009

1. When I try to run the Network Setup Wizard, I get an error at the very end that Windows was unable to complete the setup
2. When I select Windows Firewall from the Control Panel, I says that it cannot start the service
3. When I select Network Connections>Local Area Connection>Properties>Advanced (tab) it says that it cannot display some of the properties of the connection because WMI information may be corrupted
4. When I try to configure my Intel network adapter, it says that it "failed to load a network component"
5. Also, this is not related to networking but the Windows Updater has failed to install every update for quite a while now.

File Share Through Network Setup Wizard

Aug 17, 2007

Two computers running windows xp professional and each computer has 3 different NIC cards. 1 wireless, 1 wired through switch and 1 wired directly. I used the network setup wizard to configure file sharing however neither computer can see the other's shared folders. The only firewall running is the default windows firewall. I suspect it has something to do with the different NIC cards and it is trying to find shared folders using the wireless as opposed to through the LAN.

Network Adapter Working But Does Not Appear In Device Manager?

Oct 9, 2005

Since upgrading to Windows XP Service Pack 2, my network adapter (a 3Com 3C905-TX-M)does not appear in Device Manager and I therefore can't get this computer to appear on my home network. The network adapter is still working because that's how I connect to the Internet, via LAN to a router then cable broadband, and IPCONFIG gives valid results including the correct IP address from the router via DHCP.I installed a clean copy of XP Home on a spare hard disk. The network adapter appeared in Device Manager and the computer appeared on the network. I then upgraded to SP2 and the network adapter disappeared from Device Manager and the computer no longer appears on the network.

Cannot Find My Documents - Network Adapter

Dec 29, 2007

I have had my Gateway laptop with Windows XP for about 3 years now. For the past year or so, for some reason my Broadcom 802.11g network adapter has been showing up as having a problem, which has meant that have not been able to use the wireless feature of the laptop. I have lived with it until tonight. I tried to fix it by trying to download a new driver, update the driver, restore settings to a previous date, ect. After nothing working, I decided to do a system recovery. When I did this, it gave me 2 options, one with backup and one without. I chose the backup option and it said everything would be saved to a "my backup" folder. I went through the process which took quite some time. It installed windows and I set the computer up. After everything, when I went to the my backup folder, it only has applications, NO DOCUMENTS. I have TONS of pictures and important documents on my computer that I now can not find. I am panicing as I truley hope I do not lose EVERYTHING. Is there any way to get this stuff back? I have done several searches and nothing comes up. Ironically, my wireless adapter is now working, but I would gladly go back to it not working to have all of my pictures back.

Mapped Network Drives Without Connecting The Network Cable?

Oct 13, 2009

I need to have network drive on my Windows XP computer. In order for a software to work, there needs to exist a network drive, named N, existing on my PC. Since there's not a second PC to link to, what I did was to created a directory named est on the same PC , share it out, and then, map a network drive, named N, to it. When my PC has an Ethernet cable connected to a switch, Windows XP will see that N drive (existing on the same PC). The moment I disconnect that Ethernet cable from the switch, the N drive is gone. Is there a way to have a mapped network drive on XP (as mentioned above), without the need to have a network cable connecting that PC to a switch?

Bizarre Network Adapter / No Icons In The Network Communications

Sep 16, 2005

My network adapter does not appear in Device Manager, until I "Show hidden devices". And then it appears as a "Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC", whereas I actually have a D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 adapter. Furthermore, I get no icons (at all) in the Network Communications window. So if I want to change any settings of my LAN, for example, I can't, because I can't select the LAN icon or right-click on it. The LAN is working though. The current driver for the Realtek adapter which is listed is a MS driver.

Unable To Find Complete List Of Network Adapters?

Sep 5, 2008

I recently installed Windows XP professional on a new hard drive on Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. The OS installed fine but now I cannot get onto internet. I have ATT/Yahoo DSL. My laptop has integrated wireless adapter.
When I look under device manager -> network adapters, I only see the following listed:
1) 1394 Net Adapter
2) Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)
3) Bluetooth Device (RFCOMM Protocol TDI)
I don't believe any of the above are for internet.
On my other laptop (Dell Latitude D610), under network adapters, I do see:
1) Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller
2) Cisco Systems SSL VPN Adapter
3) Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
Using Latitude D610 laptop, I am able to connect to the internet wireless. What do I need to do to my Inspiron 6000 to enable it to connect to the internet wireless? Under control panel -> network connections, I only see 1394 connection and Bluetooth Network Connection. No LAN 2, LAN 3, Wireless connection, etc.

Slow Network Browsing: "My Network Places" Takes Long To Click?

Jun 9, 2006

when I browse "My Network Places", the browsing is so incredibly slow. It takes a long while when you click one icon in the “My Network Places” for that to open up and go to the next directory or when just first displaying the computers in “My Network Places”, it goes so slow.
I use Windows Workgroup on the LAN to share out internet. Everything else, other than browsing the network, works great. The internet browses nice and fast.

This morning I opened My Network Places while my pc was still loading all the programs at start-up and "My Network Places" was fast. After a few minutes it was back to normal low pace. Now I guess it is something running on my pc slowing it down. Is it maybe to do with XP Service Pack 2? Before installing SP2 the network browsing on my pc is fast, after installing SP2, it is slow. Other computers on the network without SP2 browse the network quite fast.
All the pc's on the network has XP Pro.

Mapped Network Drives: Programs Unable To Find Drives?

Apr 20, 2006

I have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers. It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".

New Hardware Wizard Can't Find Driver Files?

My problem seems to be in this catagory. I'm trying to install a new AG board. When I get to Hardware Wizard Search and Install options, I type in C:Program (This is where I've downloaded drivers) an error msg. states that there is no device info in this location. I get the same response when I enter the file name. I've battled this driver problem for two days, from installation disk drivers not compatable, to not finding downloaded drivers. Any solutions would be greatly recieved.

No Network Access

Jun 6, 2005

My Winxp machine cannot access my home network or the internet. If I boot up in Safe mode I have network and internet access, but in regular mode my Nic card shows a limited connection error. The last thing I installed before the nic card stopped working was Symantec Antivirus corporate edtion over the network.

I have tried to remove it, but it needs the network to access the uninstall file. I also tried copying the uninstall file onto the computer and this did not work. And system restore will not work for whatever reason.

Anyone seen this before or have any ideas?

Can USB Key Be Viewed Over Network?

Jun 10, 2010

I teach at a university. It's final test time. I keep some private files (tests, scores, etc.) on a USB key at work, and some old tests on my HDD. My computer is hard-wired into a static IP address. I also have a D-Link DIR-300 router in between (not sure if it even has a firewall). I was using my USB key today, and something odd happened. My most important files (tests) I keep locked-up with encryption software called Truecrypt, which requires me to enter a password to unlock a secret USB key partition. I had that folder open today, after working with it, and was sitting at my desk interviewing a student for about 10 minutes. Then I went to close out the encrypted drive (which appears as a HDD on My Computer after I enter a password to access it). That's when something odd happened. The message that popped-up basically said that some of the files on that drive were "in use" by 2 other processes, and if I closed it, then those other processes would lose out. That bugged me a bit, because I wondered just what processes were running in there? I have updated anti-virus software on that machine, and it wasn't doing a scan at the time. Usually the drive just closes-out with no warnings like this.

Then, later this afternoon, I left my computer on and went to class. It's set to sleep on its own after 30 minutes. It didn't. The screen was frozen at my wallpaper with no icons. I then tried to CTRL-ALT-DELETE, and another message popped-up that said (again, paraphrasing), "Two other users are accessing this machine. If you shut down now, the connection will be broken." So now I'm wondering. who the heck are these other users, and what's going on? I don't seem to be sharing anything on purpose. Is it possible that someone is sneaking around inside of my machine? I'm assuming network administrators at work can do this if they want. Do you think that's what was happening? The thing that bothers me about that is that they sometimes employ PT students to help with IT. Could a student have gotten access to my entire machine somehow? Again, my antivirus software is up-to-date (Microsoft Essentials), and I switched to a trial of Kaspersky 2011 after today just out of curiousity after this happened.
