This came with my Dimension 2400 desktop 3 years ago which of course I updated to SP2.I was wondering if it could be used as the operating system for another laptop without one (maybe Dell or Toshiba) for my second computer and still be recognized for all the Microsoft updates. View 10 Repliesa while back i got tired of vista.but never uninstalled it because i never had the disk well now i have a disc that i think will work.its the xp home edition reinstallation disc, but its from a desktop computer.this leads to my first question. will it work with the laptop im wanting to put xp on? if i can get past that. i don't have the blue dell disc that contains driver, utilities, and applications from the xp computer. i have the ones from my dell laptop which is vista. will i be able to use those disc, or download the drivers and what not from the dell site once xp is on here.?

I used an XP home sp2 disc to format and reinstall the operating system no probs, but now the screen resolution won't go above 640x480 pixels, and everything is massive, I'm guessing this is a driver issue

View 15 Replies View RelatedIt's got to the time where I need to do this and I have done it numerous times in the past but this time I am having problems.
Last week bought two new 500gb harddrives and replaced my existing 300gb slave. Formatted and partitioned this and all was okay.
Today I have removed the 300gb master and installed, formatted and partitioned the new 500gb hd with PM8.
I have set the primary partition as active and all the others are logical which is asthe old hd was partitioned.
I have been geting a disk boot failure error on trying to boot from the CDROM with the XP installation disk. Having originaly had the bios set incorrectly I have now rechecked it and ensured the boot order is set to CDROM, HD-0 and the floppy.
I have ensured that the primary hd has been detected, detection is set to to Auto and Access Mode to LBA following the Seagate instructions. I have now also disconnected the secondary drive to exclude that from the picture until I get into the primary drive.
I have also reset the jumper on the new primary to Master having disconnected the secondary drive.
Someone gave me a laptop that didn't work. It's a HP Pavillion ze 4900.It originally had xp home on it, so I ordered a new disk to install on it. It was saying that some files were not found. It would do nothing. It also has a password on it. I did find out the password from them. I tried doing the repair installation and it didn't work, so I formatted the partition and tried to re-install to it. The problem is that when it finished formatting and then loading the windows files, when it restarts from there I have to put in the password again and it starts all over. I have done this 2x now and still it keeps doing the same thing. I just turned it off and thought

The problem is that it seems at some point that some kind of update was interrupted during the process and the system will not load unless a windows xp professional edition disk is inserted to complete the update. View 43 Replies View RelatedAnyway, when upgrading from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Pro earliler this week, everything seemed to work fine and all the program icons I had from Windows XP Home appeared on the XP Pro desktop. However, my Internet Broadband/Dial-Up connection dissapeared from 'Network Connections' and I therefore could not connect to the internet, even though the ISP ('BT Broadband' - I'm based in the UK in case you wonder who BT are) icon remained on my desktop and their software appeared in Programs.
When I contacted my ISP they claimed this is a problem with Windows XP upgrade to Pro and I should contact Microsoft Support. Is this true?
Anyway, I've had to resort to doing a clean install of Windows XP Home again now in order to get back on the internet with my Broadband internet and installing my ISP's USM Modem software all over again. It worked, but still want to upgrade to XP Pro.
Any ideas on how this 'problem' can be resovled. Don't want to have to do a clean install again and again. Also, is It this a common problem with upgrading to Windows XP Pro from Windows XP Home as my ISP claim ?
Should I install SP2 on my XP home edition on my laptop? is this fine or are there problems related and or is it even neccesary.

When I try to start in normal mode, it goes to the windows xp loading screen with the green loading bar and then goes blank, with my moniter blinking on and off. a checkdisk in safe mode returns no errors. the only things plugged into the motherboard are my cd drive and a video card.
