WIN Home Vs WIN 98SE & Ram?

Feb 26, 2005

if XP cleans up RAM better than 98 SE, I listen to online internet music constantly and I even though I restart every couple of hours, it still wants to freeze up and practically stop. I used to have a little ram reclaimer that would automatically restore unused or once used RAM, but it ended up using too much RAM to work and actually caused more problems than having it trying to restore usable RAM. I eventually removed it and that seemed to help for a while.

Upgrading From 98SE To XP

Sep 30, 2008

so I am thinking about upgrading, but with some confusion, and some concern. I have been reading on Wiki about Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA), and it sounds not only am I going to be pestered for the product key eveytime I make a hardware update to my PC, but Microsoft will take it upon themselves to download spyware when I go online.Could somebody explain to me more simply than the author of the Wikpedia article what happens. (I don't understand what he means by "notifications" nor exactly what is being updated/read of my machine on an 'update').Am I right to think that I will only ever be asked of my product key to reactivate? I am only ever stuck with the one product key, right?

If so, why check against hardware? As I understand from what I have read elsewhere, system hardware is read at installation, recorded in a file, and then if checked positively against for changes, causes a re-activation prompt. But what's criminal in upgrading? If the product key remains constant to one supplied with the product (likewise for pirates), then in what way is it catching anybody out? Finally, if each copy of XP is generic and not carrying a unique product key, does this mean each batch comes with numerous codes? If ever I were to lose it, Microsoft would supply me with one of a ker-zillion (an expression of my ignorance) pre-determined codes?

Upgrading From 98SE To 2000?

Aug 11, 2009

The secretary's computer at our church is a 98SE machine; has never been upgraded. I'm trying to do what I can to at least get it networked and on line. My first attempt with a secondhand network card failed; the card didn't pass the driver diagnostic utility ("Lookback fail"). I picked up a new card and plan to work on getting the machine on line first, then trying to upgrade it. I've never upgraded a Windows machine before (I was dragged away from my Amigas kicking and screaming), and I want to find out if there are any potential land mines. This was apparently a decent machine back in the day. I'm away from it right now, but IIRC the specs are 233 MHz CPU, 384MB RAM, and 20 GB hard drive with 9 GB free. I just finished installing my old HP Officejet 5510 on it with no issues. My current plan of attack is to get the network up and running (pastor has XP machine; I just got his DSL service up today), upgrade to Windows 2000 so I can get current antivirus and Firefox/Thunderbird software, then see about using Ghost 10 to copy the hard drive over to an 80 gig or so drive. Hopefully this will keep our secretary going for another two or three years at which time I hope we can afford a new computer. Why not XP? Well, I think I can pick up a NOS 2000 upgrade package cheap, and money is definitely a consideration. True, we might be able to pick up a new low-end desktop tower for not much more than this will cost, but then we would almost certainly be looking at having to buy all new software to use it. Most of our present software, especially WordPerfect 9, should run under Windows 2000. I think.

Dual Boot And 98SE

Sep 20, 2004

I have a PC with Windows XP Pro (inc SP2) installed on a NTFS disk. I want to add a second disk and install Win98SE on it and hence use dual booting. Is this possible? I have heard that you have to install Win98SE first on a Fat32 disk and then XP after. The machine is a Dell with XP pre-installed, I'm not particularly keen to start rebuilding it.

Trying To Upgrade To Window From 98SE

Feb 17, 2007

I'm considering upgrading from Windows 98SE to XP. I figured if XP is being replaced by Vista and I'm way behind as far as OSs go, then it's time to upgrade. I want to upgrade as is, and I read that the Upgrade disc of XP is cheaper than the first-time Windows installation CD. However, I wanted to know before I purchased it, if I would need my original Windows 98SE disc. I already have Windows on my computer, but I no longer have the original disc (98SE was installed so long ago, I don't know where it is). My computer itself is capable and is over the reccommended requirements to run xp.Is it true that I don't need my original disc to install XP over 98SE? If so, that would be fine. I heard that the only benefit of a clean install is the fact that the previous OS is gone and won't interfere with installation.

NTFS From FAT32 To Multiboot With Pro And 98SE?

Nov 23, 2005

I have an 80Gb WD-HDD with 512 Mb RAM for a P4 2.26Gb. I understand that NTFS system is better in a lot of aspects(security, better use of space, etc, etc)but how can I multiboot with XP Pro and 98SE? Can I formate different partitions with different files systems? Do I need to install each OS in different partitions? The other software(applications and so),can I install them in a 3rd partition for possible reinstallations of the OS?

Can I access every file from each one of the OS?Because if I need a FAT32 partition for files in order to be accessed by 98SE,then Id rather leave the HDD FAT 32 as it is. I already know I cant use both OS to go on the internet.I have to use XP for that. I know, they are a lot of questions but Im sure a lot of people is wondering the same.

Home And Pro Not Playing Nice Together Via Home Wifi?

I'm trying to share folders between two laptops set up on a home wifi workgroup. Currently, both laptops are "seeing" each other's share folders (as mapped network drives), and both laptops have full internet access I have allowed simple file sharing on the XP Pro system. I have also set the firewalls to allow access, and I'm using AVG firewall instead of Windows firewall. However, only one of the computers is allowing access to the other. The XP Pro computer can access the share folders on the XP Home computer, but not vice versa. When using the XP Home computer, I can map the shared folders on the XP Pro computer, but when I try to access them, I get denied access.

WFP Needs CD Of SP3 Home 32 Bit

Whilst attempting to upgrade Ad-Aware I clicked that button and was taken to Cnet. On clicking download a window advised that I needed Hebrew language to make the thing work. There was no option so I thought it must be part of the new version Ad-Aware but immediately I had accepted it, Windows File Protection said " files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognised versions" etc Insert Windows XP Home Edition SP3 CD. Since SP3 was installed as an upgrade,Would System Restore mend this problem? I made a new restoration point this month. My last backup disc was 18 long mths ago. I don't know how to make a CD of SP3 so what's the easiest way of sorting this out. BTW, my pc hasn't been restarted.

SP2 Is Same For Home & Pro?

Feb 20, 2005

I have xp pro on my laptop at work. I am thinking I need to do a clean install on a computer running xp home. We're on dialup and I'd rather not try downloading it again unless I have to. I haven't looked yet but I'm hoping MS put a huge .exe file on my laptop hd and it's still there. I used the MS update feature to automatically update it when sp2 came out.

where I could make a "slipstreamed bootable cd" with xp and sp2 for a computer. I was thinking this would be nice to have - my mom is not technologically inclined. The computer is a dell and I haven't thought til now to check with them and see if they made a cd available for it with sp2. If this works, though, I shouldn't need that, right? Wondering if I can do it for each machine running xp? On my way to face the blue screen on my mom's nonbooting computer. Maybe y'all will have some encouraging words for me on my arrival.

Reinstallation Of Home

Oct 5, 2008

It's got to the time where I need to do this and I have done it numerous times in the past but this time I am having problems.

Last week bought two new 500gb harddrives and replaced my existing 300gb slave. Formatted and partitioned this and all was okay.

Today I have removed the 300gb master and installed, formatted and partitioned the new 500gb hd with PM8.

I have set the primary partition as active and all the others are logical which is asthe old hd was partitioned.

I have been geting a disk boot failure error on trying to boot from the CDROM with the XP installation disk. Having originaly had the bios set incorrectly I have now rechecked it and ensured the boot order is set to CDROM, HD-0 and the floppy.

I have ensured that the primary hd has been detected, detection is set to to Auto and Access Mode to LBA following the Seagate instructions. I have now also disconnected the secondary drive to exclude that from the picture until I get into the primary drive.

I have also reset the jumper on the new primary to Master having disconnected the secondary drive.

OEM Home Work On A Different PC?

Jan 28, 2008

Ok so I have a OEM version of XP home from a old dell that is being replaced by my new build. Is it possible to use the reinstall disk to put xp on the new rig? I have heard that the OS will look for tags in the mobo bios and won't install if it can't find them.If it won't work would an upgrade version of xp work. They are cheaper but need verification that you own a copy of a MS operating system, could I use the OEM xp for verification. If none of this will work is there anyother way to get around buying a full version of xp home? I don't want to spend $200 on the OS if I can avoid it.
