98SE Installed - 6100 DSL Modem
Feb 22, 2008
I have an old Thinkpad 600 which has Windows 98SE installed. I am trying to hook up a Westell 6100 DSL modem. I have everything hooked up, but I can't find the drivers to make it work with 98. I tried the Windows disk and the disk I got with the modem. I tried to look for the drivers on the internet, but I really don't know which ones I need.

I used a retail version of XP Upgrade to upgrade my 98SE to XP Home. I activated it. Can I use the same Upgrade to change my son's 98SE to XP? I have him on a network using a cable modem and router. Or must I buy another pgrade specifically for him?

When I run the Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) and go to Event Viewer (Local) System I noticed I have a long list of errors with a Source of Service Control Manager, Event 7001, and Property > Description of: The Remote Access Connection Manager service depends on the Telephony service which failed to start because of the following error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.As I have no telephone modem installed (I use cable) how do I stop this error from appearing in Event Viewer to me it makes no since to have time wasted checking on this service/event.

if XP cleans up RAM better than 98 SE, I listen to online internet music constantly and I even though I restart every couple of hours, it still wants to freeze up and practically stop. I used to have a little ram reclaimer that would automatically restore unused or once used RAM, but it ended up using too much RAM to work and actually caused more problems than having it trying to restore usable RAM. I eventually removed it and that seemed to help for a while.

so I am thinking about upgrading, but with some confusion, and some concern. I have been reading on Wiki about Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA), and it sounds not only am I going to be pestered for the product key eveytime I make a hardware update to my PC, but Microsoft will take it upon themselves to download spyware when I go online.Could somebody explain to me more simply than the author of the Wikpedia article what happens. (I don't understand what he means by "notifications" nor exactly what is being updated/read of my machine on an 'update').Am I right to think that I will only ever be asked of my product key to reactivate? I am only ever stuck with the one product key, right?
If so, why check against hardware? As I understand from what I have read elsewhere, system hardware is read at installation, recorded in a file, and then if checked positively against for changes, causes a re-activation prompt. But what's criminal in upgrading? If the product key remains constant to one supplied with the product (likewise for pirates), then in what way is it catching anybody out? Finally, if each copy of XP is generic and not carrying a unique product key, does this mean each batch comes with numerous codes? If ever I were to lose it, Microsoft would supply me with one of a ker-zillion (an expression of my ignorance) pre-determined codes?

New PC: Custom desktop, two SATA 250GB HD, Itel dual-core 2.33 GHz CPU, 2GB RAM, XP.I have an IDE plugin to which I want to attach my 98se 40GB HD. It is completely self-contained with all necessary drivers and its own registry.I would like to run 98se on my new, much faster computer. What problems am I likely to encounter if I simply install the drive and boot it up on my new PC?

The secretary's computer at our church is a 98SE machine; has never been upgraded. I'm trying to do what I can to at least get it networked and on line. My first attempt with a secondhand network card failed; the card didn't pass the driver diagnostic utility ("Lookback fail"). I picked up a new card and plan to work on getting the machine on line first, then trying to upgrade it. I've never upgraded a Windows machine before (I was dragged away from my Amigas kicking and screaming), and I want to find out if there are any potential land mines. This was apparently a decent machine back in the day. I'm away from it right now, but IIRC the specs are 233 MHz CPU, 384MB RAM, and 20 GB hard drive with 9 GB free. I just finished installing my old HP Officejet 5510 on it with no issues. My current plan of attack is to get the network up and running (pastor has XP machine; I just got his DSL service up today), upgrade to Windows 2000 so I can get current antivirus and Firefox/Thunderbird software, then see about using Ghost 10 to copy the hard drive over to an 80 gig or so drive. Hopefully this will keep our secretary going for another two or three years at which time I hope we can afford a new computer. Why not XP? Well, I think I can pick up a NOS 2000 upgrade package cheap, and money is definitely a consideration. True, we might be able to pick up a new low-end desktop tower for not much more than this will cost, but then we would almost certainly be looking at having to buy all new software to use it. Most of our present software, especially WordPerfect 9, should run under Windows 2000. I think.

I have a PC with Windows XP Pro (inc SP2) installed on a NTFS disk. I want to add a second disk and install Win98SE on it and hence use dual booting. Is this possible? I have heard that you have to install Win98SE first on a Fat32 disk and then XP after. The machine is a Dell with XP pre-installed, I'm not particularly keen to start rebuilding it.

I'm considering upgrading from Windows 98SE to XP. I figured if XP is being replaced by Vista and I'm way behind as far as OSs go, then it's time to upgrade. I want to upgrade as is, and I read that the Upgrade disc of XP is cheaper than the first-time Windows installation CD. However, I wanted to know before I purchased it, if I would need my original Windows 98SE disc. I already have Windows on my computer, but I no longer have the original disc (98SE was installed so long ago, I don't know where it is). My computer itself is capable and is over the reccommended requirements to run xp.Is it true that I don't need my original disc to install XP over 98SE? If so, that would be fine. I heard that the only benefit of a clean install is the fact that the previous OS is gone and won't interfere with installation.

I have an 80Gb WD-HDD with 512 Mb RAM for a P4 2.26Gb. I understand that NTFS system is better in a lot of aspects(security, better use of space, etc, etc)but how can I multiboot with XP Pro and 98SE? Can I formate different partitions with different files systems? Do I need to install each OS in different partitions? The other software(applications and so),can I install them in a 3rd partition for possible reinstallations of the OS?
Can I access every file from each one of the OS?Because if I need a FAT32 partition for files in order to be accessed by 98SE,then Id rather leave the HDD FAT 32 as it is. I already know I cant use both OS to go on the internet.I have to use XP for that. I know, they are a lot of questions but Im sure a lot of people is wondering the same.

I recently reinstalled XP home on my Dell Dimension 8250 and now it won't see my Actiontec GT704-WG modem.
Modem/router working just fine, am wireless online with it on my laptop right now, all lights green.
Have checked TCP/IP and DNS to automatically detect in settings IE will not let me log onto router w/ "dslmodem" or "192.168.0.1" I get "The page cannot be displayed".When I run a repair connection on my "LAN or High-Speed Internet" I get the following message: "The following steps of the repair operation failed: Renewing the IP address. Please contact your network administrator or ISP." Device manager says network adapter is working.Have tried many, many fixes recommended on various sites and forums where problem was nearly identical, but to no avail.Have tried setting up a separate broadband connection via the connection wizard and get "Error 678" for my attempt.Have rebooted, redownloaded drivers etc. and am seeing yellow question marks on Device Manager for Ethernet controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, PCI Input Device & Texas Instruments RNDIS Adapter. I downloaded the ethernet driver from dell (orange light on ethernet cable when plugged in), but the update driver utility would NOT see/find the file no matter where it was downloaded to. Switched the router to USB cable instead. Router shows green light with either when in use. Have rebooted and replugged everything MULTIPLE times in varying order.

This may not be the NG for this but occasionally my modem goes offline for a reason which I haven't determined. The only way I know to get it back on line again is to close and restart the computer, and then I can redial.Otherwise, I can't.I feel there must be some way of re-setting the modem without having to
close down and open up again. Is there?

I had this problem before and solved it. However could not remember how !!!I use a broad band for most tasks. Rarely I use my modem to send faxes via computer.Today I tried to send a fax, using my modem Zoom 56K datafax dual mode PnP.I did not manage to do it and all times computer shows a box with a standard
note advising me that "Your modem is being used by another program. Please the other program and tru again. if error persists re-start yourcomputer".There is no other program running as I have rebooted my computer several times.Diagnostics does not work at all.Eventually there is a startup program taking the modem but I do not know what it could be.Sure this situation has been occurred with some of you

I installed the recommended driver from IBM and Lenovo from the MDCB3C2k, thinking my modem is a 3COM modem(I have no idea what kinda modem I have. Either 3COM or Xicro, I don't know how to tell), I installed the driver and it did nothing my modem is still undetected.note: I have used Belarc Advisor, and could not get a result for my Modem Model under Communication Devices.

I have had an issue just crop up on my dell dimension 4550 running xp pro, 2.53 p4 with 1 gig of ram. Seems that everything is fine until I connect to a web page. I can start IE, and everything is fine, utilization is 0-20%, but once I type in a url and hit go, cpu goes to 100%, eventually the web page loads after a few minutes or more(on dial up, 56k) where this only took seconds in the past. Have current virus defintions, running ms antispyware also current. If I finally disconnect from the internet, and close IE, cpu utilization goes back down. I gave up and restored from a ghost image from a month ago back when i know it was working, and it still is doing the same thing and it has me stumped. I was thinking maybe its having hard drive issues, but it works fine unless I connect to the internet. Also, I can simply bring up IE and it works fine, no pegged CPU, but as soon as I connect to my isp and try to load a web page, cpu goes to 100% and does not recover. Looking at task mngr, ieexplorer and explorer.exe are really the only things that are taking all the cpu time.

I had the machine into the shop for days. One day I stepped in, and they had
something they said was the Internet connection [not the 56k modem] plugged in.
I never saw it used, just connected.Thinking about this since all they had was a wire was why can't I do that instead of this 56k modem ?They said something about I can if I use road runner. What are they talking about ?It shows my 1394 connection this moment as active. @ 400 bps. Before I took it to the shop, my LAN and 1394 were both disabled.I'm thinking this 1394 being enabled may be what's slowing my modem down now.If that's true I'd just as soon have the 1394 disabled again.more pix @ http://members.toast.net/cbminfo/index.html

I have just upgraded to XP and can't log to internet. Phone connection fine, modem looks good in device manager. I've tried remove/install on modem , drivers , ports , ISP software. Tried downloading generic driver from agere 8.3 version. I read in some forum that Agere version 8.2 and 6.04 will work but you have to subscribe to a site like modemsite.com for a fee without knowing if it will work.I borrowed a friends external robotics modem and it worked fine. The internal lucent win v.90 k56modem worked fine with ME but will not with XP. I have been reading and searhing diligently with no luck, then I remebered this site from about 2 / 3 years ago when this forum helped me with a virus problem.
