Apr 23, 2005I bought this computer a couple years back. It came preinstalled with Windows ME. Once XP came out, I bought the upgrade. When XP Pro came out, I bought that upgrade. Now, I am trying to use Server 2003 just to see how my comp will do. See, I want my speakers and microphone to work. The only problem is that they are built into the moniter. Everything worked with the speakers and microphone on all my previouse OSs. But now, on Server 2003, nothing will work.

Dec 28, 2007Booted my pc up this morning as normal, but my sound had just disapeared for some strange reason.
Windows sounds seem to have disapeared, i`ve been troubleshooting this much of the day now........
what i have is the following,
Audigy 2 ZS
Onboard Nvidia Sound
to trouble shoot i did the following........
Checked my control panel sounds, it was displaying no device, were it normally shows the Audigy 2
i downloaded the drivers again for the audigy 2
I decided to power off my computer and change the PCI slot, when windows booted back up i re-installed the audigy 2 drivers, it then asked to re-boot again which i did, still it seemed to install ok at the time, it`s still just beeping.
Laptop Speaker And Windows Screen On Startup
Nov 24, 2007window on start up and my speakers on my laptop not working. This started out with the speakers I turned down the volume to nothing while playing a game and then I tried to turn it back up I got no sound from internal speakers. tried all the options in the volume looking for anything muted but nothing. Tried to update the sound card drivers with the same results of no sound out of the internal speakers. when starting my laptop I had a smaller then the normal screen when starting up, same size on my main screen. able to change to a higher resolution to fill the entire screen but if I go any lower then the highest resolution I have a black boarder were the window should be.

Suddenly no more audio from this system, except for the computer inside speakers that is working just fine. I have checked all the connections (speakers and woofer). I have been doing a lot of "cleaning" lately - due to the fact that my computer has been very slow... I used CCleaner, WinUtilities and Premium Booster. My anti virus is AVG.

Apr 6, 2007I downloaded some windows updates but not all of them installed. When I go to Turn Off Computer, the "Turn Off" button has changed, indicating that when I hit it, it will install the updates. There's also a field I can click which will Turn Off without installing the updates. When I click the Turn Off buttion, it attempts to install two updates. It doesn't appear to be successful. Every time I Turn Off Computer it apparently tries to install the same two updates. I can reboot and do this over and over and they don't "take".There's nothing in Event Viewer to indicate what's going on. I couldn't find any installation logs though I'm not sure where to look.

Jan 13, 2009Okay so I usually leave my computer on all the time. I went to bed and when I got up it was off and couldn't get it to turn on. So I assumed it might be the power supply so I went and bought a new one from stamples. He turned on for maybe 5 seconds then turned off. so I took it back thinking maybe I didn't have enough watts. The higher watts didn't doanything. I am lost without my computer can anyone help? I have Win XP..Could it be the fan? Even though the fan worked when i plugged in first PS...Second didnt do anything. Could it be something to do with motherboard?

Reinstalled Can't See Modem
Aug 13, 2007I recently reinstalled XP home on my Dell Dimension 8250 and now it won't see my Actiontec GT704-WG modem.
Modem/router working just fine, am wireless online with it on my laptop right now, all lights green.
Have checked TCP/IP and DNS to automatically detect in settings IE will not let me log onto router w/ "dslmodem" or "192.168.0.1" I get "The page cannot be displayed".When I run a repair connection on my "LAN or High-Speed Internet" I get the following message: "The following steps of the repair operation failed: Renewing the IP address. Please contact your network administrator or ISP." Device manager says network adapter is working.Have tried many, many fixes recommended on various sites and forums where problem was nearly identical, but to no avail.Have tried setting up a separate broadband connection via the connection wizard and get "Error 678" for my attempt.Have rebooted, redownloaded drivers etc. and am seeing yellow question marks on Device Manager for Ethernet controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, PCI Input Device & Texas Instruments RNDIS Adapter. I downloaded the ethernet driver from dell (orange light on ethernet cable when plugged in), but the update driver utility would NOT see/find the file no matter where it was downloaded to. Switched the router to USB cable instead. Router shows green light with either when in use. Have rebooted and replugged everything MULTIPLE times in varying order.
Modem Going Off Line
Sep 12, 2005This may not be the NG for this but occasionally my modem goes offline for a reason which I haven't determined. The only way I know to get it back on line again is to close and restart the computer, and then I can redial.Otherwise, I can't.I feel there must be some way of re-setting the modem without having to
close down and open up again. Is there?

Aug 10, 2005I have had an issue just crop up on my dell dimension 4550 running xp pro, 2.53 p4 with 1 gig of ram. Seems that everything is fine until I connect to a web page. I can start IE, and everything is fine, utilization is 0-20%, but once I type in a url and hit go, cpu goes to 100%, eventually the web page loads after a few minutes or more(on dial up, 56k) where this only took seconds in the past. Have current virus defintions, running ms antispyware also current. If I finally disconnect from the internet, and close IE, cpu utilization goes back down. I gave up and restored from a ghost image from a month ago back when i know it was working, and it still is doing the same thing and it has me stumped. I was thinking maybe its having hard drive issues, but it works fine unless I connect to the internet. Also, I can simply bring up IE and it works fine, no pegged CPU, but as soon as I connect to my isp and try to load a web page, cpu goes to 100% and does not recover. Looking at task mngr, ieexplorer and explorer.exe are really the only things that are taking all the cpu time.

ME To PRO Upgrade / Modem Won't Work
Feb 14, 2006I have just upgraded to XP and can't log to internet. Phone connection fine, modem looks good in device manager. I've tried remove/install on modem , drivers , ports , ISP software. Tried downloading generic driver from agere 8.3 version. I read in some forum that Agere version 8.2 and 6.04 will work but you have to subscribe to a site like modemsite.com for a fee without knowing if it will work.I borrowed a friends external robotics modem and it worked fine. The internal lucent win v.90 k56modem worked fine with ME but will not with XP. I have been reading and searhing diligently with no luck, then I remebered this site from about 2 / 3 years ago when this forum helped me with a virus problem.

Sep 4, 2007Due to frequent travel I still use a dialup connection on Guam, to save ISP fees for broadband.
After booting up and logging in to my ISP, Eudora and Firefox both work fine.
If I Disconnect from the ISP, and close the software.I cannot check email and Firefox cannot see any server.
So I have to reboot as I only have one phone line and need to keep the line clear...this is very annoying.
