System Speaker Beeping Instead Of Playing Sounds.
Dec 28, 2007
Booted my pc up this morning as normal, but my sound had just disapeared for some strange reason.
Windows sounds seem to have disapeared, i`ve been troubleshooting this much of the day now........
what i have is the following,
Audigy 2 ZS
Onboard Nvidia Sound
to trouble shoot i did the following........
Checked my control panel sounds, it was displaying no device, were it normally shows the Audigy 2
i downloaded the drivers again for the audigy 2
I decided to power off my computer and change the PCI slot, when windows booted back up i re-installed the audigy 2 drivers, it then asked to re-boot again which i did, still it seemed to install ok at the time, it`s still just beeping.

My Windows Start and Exit Windows sounds weren't playing at all. They were playing before, so I have no idea why they would suddenly stop working. I also noticed some other strange occurrences, including Windows booting unusually fast (i figured this might be why the sound wouldn't play, ie. it didn't have time to, but now I'm not so sure), shutting down unusually slow, icons that are supposed to be in the taskbar aren't, and when the desktop first appears after startup, the right-click menu appears, even though I didn't summon it.

I have read various submissions regrding the beeping sounds being made within various tower units. My issue goes along the same line but the symptoms are different.yes the beeping starts at start-up. After I have signed in with the password/ sign-in name. But the beeping is not constant. It is erratic at times. Low piches and High pitches. Sometimes at the same time and others slow and fast. The beeping happens when I start some programs but is not specifically related. And the beeping happens at any time from start up right through the use and until shut down. And times where no sound is heard for long periods. In one of the members comments was mention of the 'Event Viewer' report.

I purchased Windows XP Home and installed it on my computer, but sometimes, especially if I am playing a game , it will make beeping noises, very much like the old arcade game I don't know what it is doing this, but I get the same sounds on different games, it will also do this when I am just in Windows and not playing a game. This is internal and not from my speakers.

Since today my computer wont startup, i tried fixing the power supply cable but i think something went wrong since it wont startup anymore,When i push the power button it starts to beep long beeps with an interval of 2.5 seconds.I noticed aswell that my fan of my powersuplier does not run. i was having trouble with the cable connections . my guess is that i made a mistake there since i have no idea of hardware related issues like this. ( and i doubt that that thing is just broken now) but hey i dont know.. do u?

I have successfully cloned my primary c partition of a dual boot system with XP Pro on the 1st primary partition c: and XP Pro on the 2nd primary partition as d: I can boot into my XP on the c: drive with no problem, but when I attempt to boot into my XP on the D drive it hangs on the blue screen right before booting into the user profiles. And believe it or not it continuously loops making the windows startup sound and the shutdown sound. It does the same in safe mode.
I will try to explain the process on what I did so it can help you experts figure out this dilemma that I'm having. My old drive an IDE 100GB IBM primary drive was partitioned into 3 parts: c: 30GB FAT32 primary d: 30GB FAT32 " e: 30gb FAT32 "

I have a 5 year old Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop equiped with XP Professional. Attached to it is a small Cambridge Soundworks speaker system that has worked perfectly until now... Suddenly no more audio from this system, except for the computer inside speakers that is working just fine. I have checked all the connections (speakers and woofer). I have been doing a lot of "cleaning" lately - due to the fact that my computer has been very slow... I used CCleaner, WinUtilities and Premium Booster. My anti virus is AVG.

For about 2 months now the speaker icon in the systray has been missing. I've been to control panel>sounds and multimedia and the area to checkmark to show it is grayed out. Tried the replace the sndvol thing from the cd, but didn't help. Also, reinstalled the software for my card.

It said there was a change to the global template for microsoft word and did I want to save changes so I said no and the pc shut down. Later on I tried to call up my key logger and heard a beeping noise from within my pc. I paid it no attention and went on the rest of the day working. I was using Quicken later on and noticed that when I tried to view certain graphs they seemed to be "fluttering" (The page seemed to go up and down rapidly on its own) I closed it and ran Avast antivirus scan. I tried to activate it and got an error message that said it ran into some kind of runtime error (I think) I finly got it started, ran a scan and came up empty of viruses. Then Avast kept shutting itself off. I emptied my waste basket, went to internet options, deleted all files and history (Including online content) then cleared all in Firefox.

I own at Pentium 4 XP Home Edition PC. Recently, I lost all of my default system sounds--like boot up sound and closing sound. The sound card is okay, because I can play CDs, listen to Real Player and otherwise get sounds.
I have gone into the sounds and audio devices properties panel and don't seem to be able to set it to play the sounds. The test button works the sounds fine, but I cannot actually activate them!
I have troubleshooted by surfing the web, installing various supposed registry fixes. I have also read the Microsoft data base articles that seem to pertain.

However in 'Sounds and Audio Devices' on Audio TAB on Sound Playback Default Device is Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio normal. On Sound Recording Default Device is Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio normal. But MIDI music Playback Default Device is blank? Dropdown offers two choices but when I close it and re-open it is blank again I've tried taking TICK out of "Use Only Default devices but when re-opened is back in

At boot up everything seems ok, the nice WinXP jingle plays and all is right with the world. At this point I can play MP3s, video files, and games and the sound works ok. Now occasionally (more often than not) the screen does a very strange refresh about 2 to 3 minutes of the computer being booted. Any open widows and the task bar reverts to Windows 98 look (grey with the old fasioned functionality boxes at the top right of an open window) then as quicky as it changes it all changes back again (say less than half a second) to WinXP look.
After this point only system sounds will play. Now if a programme already has access to the sound device then it works until it is shut down. Anything that tries to access the sound device after this fails to (itunes says there is an audio config error, WMP says that another programme has access to the sound device). I guess whatever that refresh thingy is it is stopping any other programme accessing the driver or preventing the driver to be released to other programmes.

I have become quite irritated by the various strange noises which happen at a "system event". I have found the dialogue box where additional events can be added to the sounds but I cannot see how to turn off the ones already there. I do not want to use "mute all" on the volume control as I frequently listen to music.
Any suggestions welcome.
While in that area of the screen, I want to remove some of the icons. The dialogue box is set to "always hide" the offending Icons but they are still showing.

I use xp pro and have Microsoft PLUS installed wich gives me a few extra themes to choose from. Everything works great except when i log in or out of windows i dont get any sounds, no matter what theme i use. It used to work fine and i am not sure exactly when it stopped.
I checked my sounds configuration and i can play the start up and shutdown sounds by testing them but they wont work when actually starting or shutting down windows. Even if i just use the regular XP theme i still dont get any sound.

The odd thing is that I can still listen to music and watch movies and the sound works fine (I just have to go into the control panel to adjust the system volume).
I've tried reinstalling the audio drivers and it didn't work. I've also checked the "sounds and audio devices" and it lists the sound card under "sound playback" and "sound recording" however, under "voice" there is nothing listed and when I try to set it to the soundcard, it just goes blank again after I hit okay, close the window and open it again.

Can anyone give links(or upload) to Windows XP System Sounds files for free.(NOT VISTA)
I mean the ones did you hear on asterisk, critical stop, Exclamation, question and all the rest.
(The ones you assign in Start->Setting->Control Panel-> Sounds/ you can find it in your Media folder on C:WINDOWSMedia).
I use Windows 98, but XP sounds better.
PS! Does anyone know whats the default size is for icon spacing on the desktop? 32? (on Windows XP)

not have system sounds played while I'm listening to music. On my old (and I do mean old: win98, 64mb ram, etc) computer when I listened to music my system sounds were muted, which was really nice. My old computer had an older soundblaster sounds card. My new computer (xp home) has onboard sound and when I listen to music I still get to hear all the system sounds, etc (ie, cards being dealt in solitaire.) Did it have something to do with my sound card on my old system?

I've been unable to get any of the system sounds (the startup and shut down chords, the classic Windows "ding", and soforth) to, well, sound (either when the should normally occur, or via the Control Panel). They will still play via Media Player, as will any other audio file. In addition, I'm not getting any sound on Flash media of any type.
I've tried a few solutions to this problem suggested on other forums:
* Uninstalling and reinstalling my sound card driver.
* Using a program called K-Lite to try and fix problems with the system sound.
* Trying a number of the registry edits at Kelly's Korner. ( http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm )
* Resetting the QuickTime options for the music synthesiser from QuickTime's own to the "General MIDI"
* Repairing and reinstalling Windows.

Unusually slow system; unsure where to go from here.machine runs very slowly for the processor and for the amount of processes running. There is some degree of visual skipping/slowness,it is particularly apparent with audio and visual media. Even the startup sound is very drawn out and is characterized by a long, skipping echo. Music skips randomly and even alert noises, (such as the one heard when ending a process) has the same skipping/echo. This happens even when there are few apparent processes running and very little CPU usage (such as 5%), as well as when the system is overloaded (which happens remarkably quickly for the 20-30 processes running).

my computer freezes when I play some video games and also when I play AVI files (if I play mpeg files they work just fine, no freezing at all) But the thing is when I play games or AVI files my computer will freeze randomly (5 minutes, 30 minutes, just randomly sometimes it won't freeze at all) I don't know if it's the memory or not.

A few months ago I built a system for a friend of mine. I had the system running stable @ 2.4 GHz (memory on a 5/4 divider, if I remeber correctly) for a week before I delivered it to him. By stable I mean dual prime overnight, memtest, and hours of COD2 without crashing. Now he has had it for a few months and he is reporting that randomly it will completely shutdown. He primarily uses it to play WoW and so far that is the only time it has crashed. It has not crashed during any other activity but he really doesn't use it for much else. It will usually crash 5 minutes into game play and after a restart it will be stable for the rest of the day. Ocassionally it will crash a few hours into game play. When the behavior first started it would BSOD. Now it just turns off with no warning. After restart it works fine. When it shuts down the standby LED on the MB remains lit but the DRAM power LED does not. I have updated the Graphics drivers to the latest 90 series beta drivers. That did not affect the problem.

What are the differences between the two? I need to buy an operating system for my new computer and the cost difference is quite drastic. Can I do the same things with each version? Also, XP Home or XP Pro? I plan to play games so would Home be a better choice?

Whenever I play a game, between 15-30 minutes, The whole computer will shut down. I've quickly played a game for 5 mins and checked my CPU temperature using SensorsView and my temperatures are going from 40 degrees celcius to 65 degrees celcius whenever I play a game. Is this enough for overheating?
