I appear to have a problem with an update for windows XP. I belive my computer has been trying to update this file for some time but it is only now, when I have tried to install a new anti virus (Bit defender 2010), that it has become a real problem. Having said that it has also prevented me getting service pack 3 and explorer 7.
When using windows update I am told that the following has failed to install, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773). It would appear that the file has downloaded but not installed. I have followed all the microsoft suggestions, one of which resulted in my having to repair windows. I have also googled this problem and found many references to the same update but no one appears to have a solution.
The last windows update that I can see is KB 905474 and was downloaded by my automatic updates.I can see it when going to windows updates/view history. Trouble is, I cannot see it in my add/remove list. does auto updates only download security updates and I assume I dont have to do anything.

In this folder it has...AutoExec.BAT with 0 KB AVG7QT.dat, with 11934 KB, and TYPE listed as Video CD movie.Boot.ini, 1 KB,CONFIG.SYS , 0 KB, deltemp.bat 1 KB, MS-DOS batch file.IO.SYS 0 KB,MSDOS.SYS 0 KB.NTDETECT.COM 47 KB, MS-DOS APPLICATION ntldr, 245 KB.These files are dated 10,11,and 12 month 2006 I did not set this up and am curious where it may have came from??? View 9 Replies View RelatedIve only been using Xp for about 6 months now, and so far all had been ok. SP2 installed fine a while back, and I am up to-date with Microsoft auto updates. Yesterday I booted up and the system froze just after running the BIOS checks, it didnt reach as far as the OS system flicking in at all, I just had a black screen. Several reboots later, I decided to boot from the master setup disk which took me to a point where I selected R, for restore to an already installed OS.
I was then asked to type in the Administrator password - this I duly did as its the only one I have installed..... and it kept rejecting it. In the end I rebooted yet again, this time without the cd being the first boot option, and XP loaded as if there had been no problem at all. I've virus checked the system and run registry checks and can find nothing wrong at all.
I'm trying to disable that horrible auto-restart feature, but I can only get so far because I'm computer illiterate.Can someone translate the directions into lay(wo)man's terms? I know I first need to get into the registry, but I don't know how to get there. I know I need to edit HKEY_something_something, but I'm not sure which one or what it needs to be changed to.

What are all the programs that are either stopped or running under the "services" tab? What would happen if I disabled them all? Do I need them? View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for Tapisrv (Telephony Service). I've looked under MMC services panel, and it seems to be missing. I've added an old internal 56K modem after the install. While everything seems to have installed okay, the computer seems to think that I have no modem (drivers are okay). A browse through the event log shows that the Tapisrv is n/a. Are all services not installed for the first time? If not, then how to add a service? I've just moved to XP, so I'm unfamiliar with it.

Every time I try to start the task scheduler in control panel -> scheduled tasks it says 'Unable to start'. When I try to view the properties of a scheduled task I get error: 0x80041315 (This is a picture of the error. I reinstalled Windows Internet Explorer 7 but it still does not appear in the services list. I also used System file checker but it didn't fix it either. I do not have Task Scheduler listed in the services list. I really don't want to reinstall windows xp...is there some way I can get the Task Scheduler working again? (Also I've selected the Notify of missed tasks option but that doesn't seem to work either)

Their advice to me has been to double click the "Event Log" in my Services list and set it to automatic. I have just realized that the title, "Event Log" does not exist in my list and I think that may be my problem. Recently, I upgraded my Windows XP Pro from a pirated version by paying for and installing the Genuine Windows XP Pro version. I had then installed SP2. I wonder if in all of this I have lost the Event Log heading and if anyone can tell me how I can get it back.

Problem: Cannot access any MCE TV capabilities, as i get message from MCE settings: "Tuner card not found...." Can play DVD's however. OEM Tuner card is ATI Theater 550 Pro. Not recognized in device manager. Have downloaded & installed driver for this tuner. Have spent hours online looking for solution. Also, noticed I am missing both "Media Center Scheduler Service" & "Media Center Receiver Service" from my services directory, and think this may be related to problem. Any thoughts overall on how to fix, and specifically, how to restore both of these missing services files?

Today i turned on my computer and as it was booting it went to a screen saying NTLDR is missing. press ctrl-alt-delete to restart. so i press ctrl alt delete and it restarts only to pause at the same screen.

I managed to turn automatic updates on, which told me there were 24 updates due, so i let them download and install, at the end it said updates complete and succeeded (apart from sp3), but straight away the balloon popped up saying there were 24 updates due - exactly the same ones that i had already installed. I checked add/remove programs and realised they hadn't actually installed. I have tried again wth the firewall turned of - didn't work. I have also changed BITS to automatic. View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Dimension 4700 with Windows XP. It was running fine until last night, when it automatically installed 8 updates before shutting down. This morning, there is a problem. I turn on the computer. It works fine for about 2 minutes, then slows down and won't respond for at least 20 seconds to anything. The fan is running loud as though it is "thinking" about something or working really hard even though I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary. If I want to shut down, I have to do it manually. Then, when I restart, it works for 2 minutes and slows again. In those first 2 minutes, I tried checking my email, using a couple programs, etc. and they work fine until it decides to slow down. I have restarted it about 5 times with the same results every time.

I've read (Microsoft Knowledge Base) that after removing CD writing programs that this sometimes happens and that some changes need to be made in the registry. It is stressed that a backup of the registry should be made before making any changes to the registry . . . AT YOU OWN RISK. My question is - how big is the registry - can I backup to a floppy or USB Flash drive or should I put the backup on my hard drive? Used HP's recovery console to run chkdsk and it fix errors on the volume. Wouldn't let me run the recovery disks I had to get from HP since they are not given with a new computer. Great I thought.Upon starting now, my antivirus won't run and a lot of Windows programs(Search adn System Restore just a blank page, Media Player, etc) .I can get IE to open up but no active X although it says it is enabled, also my home page doesn't show up at all but it is set to it. Those are some of the things I have found wrong so far as I am sure I have more.

But now it boots soooooooooooooo slow about 1-2 mins but once up it is fine. It shuts down fina as well. Done all scans virus adaware etc so the machine is now clean. So how do I speed up the boot.
