I have a Dell Dimension 8400 running windows xp home. 2.99GHZ processor and 58 GB free space left. My problem: My computer automatically goes into hibernation mode and will not start up again for at least 5-10 minutes after. It gives no warning whatsoever when this happens. I'm risking it happening right now. I have the computer set to stay on at all times. All power options are set to "never" turn off.

I'm new to this site and I'm not very tech savy, but anyways I'm running a basic, older model e-machines computer with windows xp sp3. When I turn it on it gives me a couple of choices; start windows normally, start in safe mode, last configuration that worked etc. Anyway I've tried all of them and the same thing happens, it goes to the boot screen for a few seconds and then it shuts off, anyone know about this problem? .

xp pro sp2 automatic updates enabled. My computer restarts automatically after shut down. This happens sometimes immediately, sometimes after a delay of up to 10 minutes. I tried using third party shut down programs, but that did not help. However if I let the computer go into hibernate, it shuts down and does not restart. I do not have Roxio installed, and in the settings for startup and recovery the automatic restart is disabled.

For the third time in about three weeks Windows has had to shut down. The error message advises me to check for BIOS update with the hardware vendor and to disable caching and shadowing. (I checked with Dell and ran their automatic scans; they report all okay.) The details in the error message are:*** Stop: OxOOOOOO8E (OXCOOOOOO5), OXBF90714C, OxB31149F8, OxOOOOOOOO *** Win32k.sys Address BF90714C base at BF 8000000, Datestamp 49e87572 I do not know what this means, what it might be telling me about my system, nor do I know what I should do about it

Like lots of other people my computer wouldn't shutdown automatically after shutting down windows xp...I tried enabling APM, but then the computer wouldn't shutdown at all, and just restarted all the time. so I always had to manually turn off my computer when the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" screen came up.
Well I fixed this problem, and came across the solution, for me accidently. I went to Device Manager, then to View then Show Hidden Devices, then you look on the list for NT Apm/Legacy Support. Under that is NT Apm/Legacy Interface Node. I found that this driver was disabled. Why, I'm not too sure, but I enabled it and now when I shut down windows, my computer turns off automatically. I went into power management and the APM was also activated/enabledIt must do this when you enable the driver.

I have Windows XP Home. When I click onto 'Internet Explorer' a window pops up flashing "VIRUS INFECTION" requesting download of spyware removal tool. When I click onto the 'scanner & remover' bar, "SPYWARE WIZARD WEB SITE" appears, requesting me to buy the software. There is no way for me to get out of this window, only by deleting at the red cross, top right corner. How to stop this automatic pop up happening? I have Spybot - Search & Destroy - which after running shows no spyware AVG 7.5 - Free Edition - which after running shows no virus.

When I hover my mouse on an inactive window it automatically switches to that window and I don't always want to switch to the inactive window
This happens in explorer or internet explorer and all other programs also. It will switch to whatever I hover the mouse over.

After following the cancellation procedure for MovieLand it continues to annoy me. I have looked for an e-mail and phone number as well to no avail. I have read two "fix it" procedures you have posted....can I follow those or do you think I will need a unique specific routine.

This is weird. I have to go through the shutdown procedure twice, i.e., Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok, then Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok again. It will then shutdown properly. The same thing happens when I try to "Restart." After doing the first shutdown sequence, everything is normal. I can open programs, surf the web, etc. It's as if I never tried to shut it down at all. Only after the second shutdown procedure will it shutdown fully. One note: When I go through the first shutdown sequence, my taskbar pops up and the desktop is darkened. After clicking Ok, the taskbar autohides and my desktop returns to its normal color.I have only had this problem for the last month or two. Before that, all was fine. It's not critical since I can shut it down. It's just annoying to have to do it twice.I have Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, build 5.00.2195.

When attempting to "shutdown" or "reboot", I have to do it twice. When I select "Start" then either shutdown or reboot, my desktop will flicker a couple of times, and then nothing appears to happen. I must select "start" again and then either shutdown or reboot and then they will work as expected.

I did a clean install of XP Pro on my Dell and now I always get "It is now safe to shutdown your computer" when I power it down. I was running 98se and it always shut down by itself so I'm sure the bios supports this as some have suggested to me.

I am running a computer on Windows XP originally designed for Windows 98. Once I put it on there everytime I go to shutdown the computer will say "It is safe to turn off your computer" and I have to shut it down manually by the power button. The older operating systems would shut down automatically when I went to shut down but for some reason XP won't on this computer. How can I make the computer shutdown automatically?

Wouldn’t it be great to easily shut down or restart your computer with a simple keystroke? Well now you can! You know about “Ctrl, Alt, Delete”, but what about “Ctrl, Alt, END”?Here's how it's done. The instructions are quite simple, and as long as you follow along, this should be rather painless! Please follow step by step!1. Right click on your desktop. Go to new, and then click on shortcut.2. A window comes up. Type in “shutdown” (without quotes) add a space and enter one of the following commands.
