View 3 RepliesI believe that the initial problem was caused by the computer being shut down when it was in the middle of an update.
Error message: Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM
I followed the Windows instructions "How to recover from a corrupted registry.."
Started the Recovery Console, created a tmp folder, backed up registry files to a new location, deleted exising registry files location, copy the registry files from the repair folder to System32config folder.
Constant updates every shutdown....for the last few weeks. Always update one of one.
For several months now Windows XP keeps reinstalling the same eleven updates each time I shut down.

View 4 Replies View RelatedEvery time I shut down windows xp pro I have the message "install updates and shutdown." I can shut down twenty times in a row, watch it install, and the same message is always there when I select shutdown. How can I remove this? I have no restore points to roll back to as far as I can tell, I already tried that.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have an issue with my computer taking a very long time to shut down. First it takes a long time after i press shut down in the start menu, for the pop up of choices (restart, log off etc) to appear. Then when I make a choice, it takes a very long time again to actually shut down. I have tried downloading windows updates lately as well and i keep getting error message "0x80248011". I cannot download any updates!!!
I have Windows XP w/SP-2 installed on a laptop. Last night, I was notified that there were four critical updates to be installed. I clicked to install them. When I shut the computer down, I noticed that the "Turn off" button had the little security shield icon superimposed and mousing over the button said that it would install updates and shut down my computer. I had never noticed anything like this before, but I assumed it was a new feature that came with a recent Windows update.
Now I'm worried that I was wrong, because after shutting down at 11:30 pm or so last night, the computer seems to be hung. I have a screen with a blue background, the Windows XP logo, and I get a message that alternates between saying "Do not turn off or unplug your computer; it will turn off automatically." and "Installing update 1 of 4." Again, this is behaviour I've never seen before, and has been going on now for over 9 hours. Unfortunately, I did not make note of the critical updates, but I seem to remember that the file sizes were not that large.
I have windows xp set for automatic updates. When I shutdown it says there are update ready and they attempt to install but fail.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThis is weird. I have to go through the shutdown procedure twice, i.e., Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok, then Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok again. It will then shutdown properly. The same thing happens when I try to "Restart." After doing the first shutdown sequence, everything is normal. I can open programs, surf the web, etc. It's as if I never tried to shut it down at all. Only after the second shutdown procedure will it shutdown fully. One note: When I go through the first shutdown sequence, my taskbar pops up and the desktop is darkened. After clicking Ok, the taskbar autohides and my desktop returns to its normal color.I have only had this problem for the last month or two. Before that, all was fine. It's not critical since I can shut it down. It's just annoying to have to do it twice.I have Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, build 5.00.2195.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen attempting to "shutdown" or "reboot", I have to do it twice. When I select "Start" then either shutdown or reboot, my desktop will flicker a couple of times, and then nothing appears to happen. I must select "start" again and then either shutdown or reboot and then they will work as expected.
View 7 Replies View Relatedxp pro sp2 automatic updates enabled. My computer restarts automatically after shut down. This happens sometimes immediately, sometimes after a delay of up to 10 minutes. I tried using third party shut down programs, but that did not help. However if I let the computer go into hibernate, it shuts down and does not restart. I do not have Roxio installed, and in the settings for startup and recovery the automatic restart is disabled.

View 14 Replies View RelatedWouldn’t it be great to easily shut down or restart your computer with a simple keystroke? Well now you can! You know about “Ctrl, Alt, Delete”, but what about “Ctrl, Alt, END”?Here's how it's done. The instructions are quite simple, and as long as you follow along, this should be rather painless! Please follow step by step!1. Right click on your desktop. Go to new, and then click on shortcut.2. A window comes up. Type in “shutdown” (without quotes) add a space and enter one of the following commands.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having some problems with my computer that started yesterday afternoon. I was on it that morning and it worked perfect and i shut it down properly before school only to find that when i got home it wont let me logon to a windows user account. After booting the windows user account pops-up and after selecting my account the computer will shut down. A friend of mine said that there might be something wrong with the winlogon but i cant find any info about that online. Right now im using safe mode with networking and i also tried accecsing the boot menu and selecting "disable automatic restart after system failure". Now rather than restarting it gives me a blue screen that reads:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
