I've run into some issues with software needing XP or better to run. So I'm thinking about moving on to XP or Vista. I really love W2K and not having to deal with blue screens error popup screens is the only factor that's bonded me to W2K for sooo long. So I guess the question is should I go to XP or move on up to Vista? This will be a full install I'm not one for throwing upgrades onto of other upgrades and so on. I'd also like to know if my files on W2k will be compatible with XP or vista? I'm going to want to move things from old HD to the new HD
The last windows update that I can see is KB 905474 and was downloaded by my automatic updates.I can see it when going to windows updates/view history. Trouble is, I cannot see it in my add/remove list. does auto updates only download security updates and I assume I dont have to do anything.
I've got an NEC LCD2010X monitor, and everytime I download the latest update from MS for either the NVIDA or Matrox Video cards I always find the drivers don't work... why ? Latest case is with the NVIDA update - I can't go beyond 4bit 640x480.
Is there a way to disable Windows Automatic Updates from updating device drivers. There are a several PC's at my job that have problems with a device driver update from. I would still like to recieve regular security updates, but I dont want any device driver updates.
I click on install, they install, I reboot - then, hey presto, they're back again!! I know the easy way is to turn off automatic updates - but, surely, there's a way around this?
My computer is only about 4 months old and I do not have it set to receive automatic updates. It seemed, with my last computer, the updates created more problems than they were worth. Does anyone have an opinion on how important it is to get these updates or am I just as well off not receiving them? The last time I checked to see what updates were available it appeared Microsoft even said that some of them could create problems.
Use Windows Update to find driver updates In Windows Update click Custom Install in the main column, and then click Select optional hardware updates in the left-hand column. Windows Update examines all parts of your system to determine what needs updating and it may recommend more than just driver updates. It's a good idea to visit Windows Update regularly for driver updates and other non-critical updates.
I am using XP Pro SP 2 with automatic updates enabled. As far as I understand since April 2005 updates are downloaded from Windows Update site once a month Correct me, if I am wrong) somewhere between 10-14 of every month? If so, how should I install critical updates, which issued between two monthly update dates?
I have downloaded SP2 and some additional updates, I am not able to download files/updates from www.apple.com. Is there some glitch or do I need to reset some of the settings so that it will let me download from their site? (I'm trying to download ipod updater but the login and download buttons do not load)
When I run the install Windows updates, the updates do not install, and I receive the following message (not verbatim, but close):"Some updates were unable to be installed..."This problem "came out of no where" and there has been no suspicious activity prior to it starting other than an IE7 redirect rootkit that NeonFx helped me remove (if I recall correctly an infection of agp440).
I have a system which is having OS as XP Professional it is having AVG 7.5 as antivirus and it was showing the last update date as 12/18/2007. so when i tried to update by using the internet it was showing the update wizard and disappearing off very soon so what is the problem for this.

I have a friend w/dialup,yeah, I know, and it's taking FOREVER to do windows update. Is there a way I can download on my broadband computer to CD then install on her computer?
I am looking for a way to download Windows XP updates to a CD. The reason is I am working on my sister's computer which says she needs many updates, including Windows XP Service Pack 2. She uses dial up and one download can take hours. My computer is on cable hookup and downloads quickly. I would like to download the updates to a cd and transfer to her computer. However, going to the download sites requires it searching my system which doesn't match. I run Win98. Does anyone know how I can get these updates?
on Xp2, PC set to download automatic, but is unable to do so for the last 2/3 weeks. I have tried windows update site, 'custom' etc, it tries to update then says 'failed'Have Ad-Aware 2008 free installed.
I have brought new pc and its the first time I have used Windows xp I previously had Windows ME and I never downloaded Microsofts updates for ME after the first time I tried and I had to reinstall windows because of the problems it caused. Some people tell me not download the updates for XP and some tell me I should anyone got any sound advice.
XP Pro SP2, Intel 3.3 cpu, 1 gig ram. My automatic updating stopped working. I had it set to notify me of new updates, and I downloaded and installed what I wanted. Now I get no notifications. If I go to the Windows download site the option I select is download critical updates. This brings up a window telling me that my computer is being checked to see if all the needed files for downloading are on my machine. I am told that they are missing and that I can download and install them by clicking on the provided button. I then see messages saying that the download is progressing, and when I get to 100% a new message tells me that the files are being registered. So far so good. Unfortunately, I am returned to the window saying my computer must be checked, and we go around again. In my investigations to date, the only suggestion I found (in several places) is update my display driver. I have not yet done so because my screen presents no problems. Anybody out there have experience with something like this?
When I go to Wundows update http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us The Window Update dialogue opens saying "The updates are being downloaded and installed". Windows Update indicates 8 Critical Updates neet to be installed. I have tried both Express and Manual install. The Windows Update site has even rechcecked to make sure I am using an genuine Windows product.
I niticed in the Start menu there is also a Microsoft Update When I go to http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us. Although it appears to be the same URL all I get is a blank page and the IE window freezes and I have to End Task. The Windows Update dialogue opens saying "The updates are being downloaded and installed". Windows Update indicates 8 Critical Updates neet to be installed. I have tried both Express and Manual install. The Windows Update site has even rechcecked to make sure I am using an genuine Windows product. But nothing happens. The Installation status box stays blank and the download progress bar continually says "Preparing for download" After about 10 minutes the Installing Updates dialogue says "Updates were unable to be successfully installed". No error messages or codes received.
Meanwhile the Windows Connector icon in the Taskbar indicates no data being transfered except it occassionally flashes as though it is attempting to connect to the server.Currently updated AVG, S&D, Ewido, MS Antispyware, Registry Mechanic and Adawre indicate no problems. HJT does not seem to indicate any problems. Trying System Restore didn't help.Using XP Home, IE6 SP2.
i forgot to mention that im running: " windowsxp -homeversion2002-sp2;hp224ram " i gave my computer a baptizim into new updates. the windows updates went into my laptop very good, until i got to the: windows media player11 crisis. i'm also on dreadful dial-up, so it took a gazillion hours to do so. oh, it was wonderful.the new internet explore 7 is pretty nice. i'm a musician, so its very important to get my stuff on Internet..... hence, my desire to use windows media player to rip my unique materpieces.
There's 5 hours of updates related to SP1. Do I need these? There's conflicting answers on win site. Doesn't SP2 cover everything? I had sp2 before running the recovery discs. I have aol 8.0- where I had 9.0 before. I'm trying to make the computer "Brand New".
I have a legit copy of windows xp professional that I obtained through school. When the update icon appears and I try to install the updates it comes back giving a least of updates it could not install. When I go to the microsoft update page it first wants to download the Genuine Windows Validation install, however, it does so unsuccessfully. I have ran the windows diagnostic which came back and said my copy of windows is genuine need updates.

OS is xp media center edition. I Have my windows update set to let me know when there are new updates to download. Now i do get updates that relate to ms office and outlook, but any updates that are windows related I do not receive.
I have been manually updating these for well over a year now. I would really like to find out and fix why win update doesn't find these critical updates automatically.
I recently had a corrupt file and ended up doing a full repair of XP-home. That wiped out IE7-- replacing it with IE-6. I had some trouble downloading updates so replaced IE-7---- Now almost everything works fine. The exception is that I get notified that "Updates Are ready for your computer-- Click here to install these updates". I click on it and it looks like the updates are being installed-- just to be notified that "These updates were not able to be installed" (Words close to that). A few seconds later I am informed that "Updates are Ready for your computer" And the cycle continues. I have tried "Custom" (my normal way of doing them) and "Express" (in frustration)--- all to no avail.
Any help will be appreciated. I'm having a problem with windows. It keeps saying this everytime I try to do a windows update.Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer. You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use Windows Update.
I've recently updated SP2 to the third one and then again after i ran Windows Update(R!) instantly, ok all updates downloaded properly(thanks god!) but then there lies the problem, not one of these 16 updates would install, I even downloaded IE7 and WMP 11 manually hoping it would change sth in updates and they'd install(this one works in many occasions if you run xp!) Well i haven't yet dared to clear my cache and download the updates again for two reasons!: 1- i have a 128 connection so i should leave pc turned on for another whole night 2- i'm somehow sure it wouldn't work and the problem lies somewhere beneath the hidden layers of windows engineering.
Does anyone know why these windows updates won't install. I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 in Italian. I know the names are in Italian but the numbers should be the same.
What are the differences of SP1 with the critical updates versus SP2 with critical updates? Is it just the interface as the 'security settings' in the control panel & other bells & whistles with everything under the hood, sort to speak, being the same?
