Accidentally Deleted An Environment Variable Bringing Back?
Jul 26, 2010
I didn't see which one it was, but its silly that it gives you no warning and I accidentally clicked the delete button on the system variables than the user variables.I've restarted my computer and so far its fine, but does anyone know what I can do to get it back? Do I need it?

I'm running Win XP. I was trying to get rid of windows messenger, and had gone into "add/delete prog." and then "add/delete windows components." There I UN-checked everything that was checked EXCEPT for windows messenger. the laptop proceeded in what i thought was deleting that program.

I uses command line > regedit /s myhome.reg where the file myhome.reg is: myhome.reg Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USEREnvironment]
"HOME"="G:\Recherche_ST\Charles\textes\" then I open a cmd.exe shell and try: > echo HOME it seems that the environment variable is not set.BUT if I go to the env var panel of the advanced / system dialog, I see that the HOME env var is set. If I press OK in this panel, then it is available in a cmd.exe shell.

I have a Windows program that reads an environment variable and depending on its state the program is configured differently. Where I can set the environment variable in the system properties and at the command line, what I really want to do is create multiple Windows shortcut Icons on the desktop, one for each possible environment variable setting. I can then select the desired runtime configuration by selecting the corresponding icon.I have tried the following on the Windows command line and it works, however when I put the same in the Icon properties->Target it complains"set ENVIRO_SETTING=1 && program_name.exe"

I have an application that uses the environment variable ClientName to store some information. It looks like this env. variable is set in the registry in the hkcu hive. It is set for console, is this some sort of default and can I change it? Do I have to change it here or is there a control panel somewhere that handles this setting? I first looked in the System control panel, under Environment Variables but didn't see it there at all. I want to set this to the machine name cause I have a number of identical systems and they are currently all set the same, I'd like them unique.

I'm trying to define an environment variable, CLASSPATH, to link to all the .jar files in a certain folder, C:cp. This folder contains 16 different .jar files. CLASSPATH needs to look like: file1.jar;file2.jar;etc Does anyone know a way to separate multiple entries with a semicolon automatically, rather than entering each .jar file? Perhaps using a wildcard (*) of sorts?

I had problems with MS automatic updates.Seems a couple of the updates did more damage than anything else. I had to go into Safe Mode to restore my computer to an earlier date. All is running very well, now, with automatic updates turned off. I do get the pop-up at the bottom telling me this alert, but I ignore. ONLY thing is, I am NOT updating anything right now !! I am unsure of what I need & what I don't need, or what may damage my computer.

I recently had to re-install Windows XP, and now when the computer comes back from sleep the taskbar is at the top of the screen and is non-responsive leading me to have to restart my computer every time it goes to sleep. The easy answer would to not have the pc go to sleep, so i tried that, and even when it goes to screen saver mode, after being in that for more than 30 minutes, the problem occurs. Anyone have an idea of what is going on?

I run a windows XP home standard computer.A few days ago I started trying to tidy up my computer, cleaning the registry and getting rid of duplicate files -with software help of course-.I used Eusing Free Cleaner, and apparently while it's just fine for registry cleaning, it does a very bad job at trying to clean duplicate files, since it shredded -meaning they can't be recovered- some things that were essential to the system. What they were I don't know. But apparently the 'Stand By' function in shut down no longer works, and I can no longer adjust the monitor refresh rate, which is stuck at its lowest setting. Is there anything that can be done to try to find out what files are missing, and to download them again?

Running winXP.I recently accidentally deleted Userinit.exe due to a false positive. Desktop would not load up but could still run programs.read somewhere that userinit.exe ran explorer.exe so tried running that from run.would start to work, brought desktop n everything up, but would freeze.on a whim i opened the control panel from run to see if there was anything i could do from there. When i ran control, it started my desktop and everything worked just fine.
Since then, i can start everything normally from running control when i start up. but i imagine it would still be healthier for my computer in general to have userinit working properly. however, here is where my computer knoledge fades. from reading other similar probs, it would seem that userinit has different parts? reg keys ect. only part of the whole working userinit configuration or whatever seems to have been deleted, since reading others who have had it fail completely dont appear to be able to do anything with their comps. so wondering how i can go about finding out which part i need to replace/fix. looked in i386, and there is a userinit, but when i go to copy it over to sys32, says overwrite? i didnt, since i would assume that means that part is fine. any ideas on what i need to replace?

So today I was cleaning out my computer, deleting and moving around old and useless files and documents, etc. I have one folder that contained a plethora of important documents for work (mostly WordPad .rtf documents that I spent countless hours composing). I have another folder, under the same name, in a different part of my computer, with old, useless stuff in it. When I attempted to delete this file, I accidentally right-clicked on the important file, and hit 'delete. Now, a huge amount of hugely important WordPad documents are gone. I checked my Recycle Bin, and nothing was there (on my computer, deleted files oddly usually dont go to the Recycle Bin). I then looked to see if I had stored backups of anything, and I had backup copies of a grand total of 3 of my documents (leaving easily 100 still gone). I then did the only thing I could think of that could possibly restore my lost files: I did a System Restore (I restored my computer to a checkpoint made at about 8 PM yesterday). They were still not there.

Was fixing to re-install windows, and I found I accidentally deleted the partition that was my external drive. I did not install windows, or format it, but when I rebooted windows, I cannot access it. It simply says. this disk is not formatted, would you like to format it now. I know of a way to recover the files, and copy to another disk, but as I am presently out of disk space, is there a way to fix the partition that was deleted. Hoping to do this cheaply. I might spend 15.00 for a program, but am shooting for a simple method

While troubleshooting a failed internet connection (Windows XP Home, SP 2) I installed Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 (probably a beta version) that wasn't downloaded from the windows website. I've since uninstalled it, so I am now running IE 6, but IE 7 left something behind. Now, when I connect to the internet I get to my home page, but when I select a link I get a blank web page and the error message "Windows cannot find ˜(null). Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click Search.Through research on the internet I've found that the registry key "C93E5AB5-7B71-4C31-B6B2-7F922A551EFF" needs to be deleted to fix my problem. I've tried with no success. I've tried adding "Everyone" to the registry users, changing the permissions so all users can access the registry and tried to delete the key, downloaded Registry Fix software, I've tried deleting it using regedit and regedt32 and I've run the program IE7betakey.reg with no success.
