i went to windows update and updated to service pack 3 and internet explorer8. i am connected and can get on yahoo messenger but cannot open any web page says i have connection problems

After I upgrade to SP2 and restart my system all my usual programs boot up,AIM,Windows Live Messenger,IE . They quickly close and the security box pops up tell me to unblock them, I then put all the programs i want on the Allow list. However it seems like all programs that use the internet will close as soon as they are open.I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling SP2 but it seems like I can only use programs that use the internet in SP1.

I move them to a separate folder for safe keeping for about a week, then, if all is well, I delete them. I don't think I've deleted the IE7 SP, but I don't know what the SP number is.

After a recent Windows Update, the computer was completing the update installation before shutting down, when the surge protector was accidentally turned off before the computer was finished with the updates. Now, when the computer powers up, it goes to the Windows XP splash screen, flashes blue for a quick second and the computer reboots.
If we access the Boot Menu, the Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Enable VGA Mode, Last Known Good Configuration options all lead to the OS Choices menu, which gives "Windows XP Professional" and "Windows Recovery Console" options. Both options reboot the computer. Only the Disable Automatic Restart option doesn't reboot the computer, and it gives a BSOD with STOP error 0x00000024........
The title pretty much sums it up, I can't update to the new service pack, a window pops up and says "Access is denied". What do I do now?

I recently installed Service Pack 2 using a windows install cd (rather than just an upgrade patch). And now everytime i run windows i cannot open any folder or explorer window with out "explorer.exe" crashing. I have turned off DrWatson and now i just get a memory error everytime. I can not downgrade because i used a Windows Install CD (can't find an option anywhere to remove service pack 2 now). Please could someone help me because it is highly annoying.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently had to format my father's pc due to rubbish and problems on it. Other than running slow, everything was working fine.
I formatted and re-installed windows xp professional and then began to add programs back on. When I came to plugging his router back in (plug in and go) it said the USB port wasn't supported. I have since found out I need 2.0 drivers installed.
I downloaded the drivers and it won't let me install them as I get the message "Please upgrade your system to Service Pack 1 or above and then run this setup program again" I have on disk already sp2 and sp3 but it wont let me install these either as it saying the system requires sp1 first.
Should I turn off the Internet Firewall before Service Pack 2 is installed? After it is downloaded, then am I protected or do I have to go back and turn on Internet Firewall? Thanks! I don't quite understand what I should do about the Internet Firewall.

It used to be just fine, until I installed some pay-for-viewing add program. I have uninstalled it since then, but the slowness remains. View 4 Replies View RelatedI use Google as my home page and lately I been having intermittent problems with it. When I open my internet explorer, it says "Internet Explorer cannot display page". It's not my internet connect because if I type in an address other than my home page in the URL bar it will open. My AOL works too. After hitting the home button a few times, my home page, Google will open. But after awhile surfing the net, when I hit the home button, I get that message again that it can't display page. Right now as I type this, I hit the home page button and it says cannot display page so I hit the back arrow and I come back to this page and I can continue typing and I can send this thread. What's wrong with my home page "Google"?
View 8 Replies View RelatedSome time ago, I must have inadvertently "pushed a button" and the page size for Internet Explorer changed from "normal" to "magnified". I can't figure out how to change it back. Going into control panel and changing the screen resolution size has absolutely no effect. (I never re-adjusted the screen size anyway). It's so annoying to have to constantly work the page bars up and down, back and forth! I think the same thing has happened to AOL.
