This is my first time posting on this forum. Im at my last resort. On Wednesday, Oct.10, 2007 windows did an automatic update that contained something called Software Distribution System 3.0. This update has killed my computer. The computer will only work properly in safe mode. I tried to do a system restore but my computer gives a message Cannot restore to specified date, No changes have been made.
My computer is on a dual boot system. In case that makes a diffrence but shouldn't. It has been working fine. No problems. I disabled the updates because I didn't like them taking so much time and I didn't want any problems till I could back up the whole dual boot thing. I don't have the software yet. But despite me turning off the updates, they reactivated themselves somehow and updated from Windows (Windows updater that I got with Service Pack 2). Now my games and alot of other software no longer work, installations won't finish, media only plays half the time. its all messed up. I have Norton and Spy Sweeper so I doubt it was any of that and their scans don't show anything. Plus it did come from windows in the windows updater. Does anyone know what I can do? This really makes me mad. I work for over a month setting this whole dual boot and redoing this computer and the updates just screwed it all up.
Can't open IE, control panel, Explore (file manager), My Computer (basically, anything that uses IE) - everything else (including Outlook Express) is ok.The Catch - It works in safe mode Have tried (and failed!): 1) Scanning for viruses - none (HouseCall and Norton scans) 2) Scanning for parasites - none of any consequence (used Spybot) 3) Delete id and create new id (thought maybe the logon id became corrupt especially since it seems to work ok in safe mode) 4) Installed Netscape. Downloaded and reinstalled IE - didn't help. 5) Checked registry - can't find anything that looks out of place...but then again...it IS the registry and I am sure it has to be in there somewhere! 6) Checked running services and processes - nothing out of the ordinary. Seems as though something may have come in WITH the SP2 update -- or that access settings to IE, My Computer, etc. have changed. I have tried all I can think of and can't find the fix for this. Is there a way to UNINSTALL SP2 and restore my settings from 8:00 a.m. yesterday morning? I can get into "remove and install programs" by backdooring it but the SP2 isn't appearing there.
PCI device is missing - I think this killed my second monitor?I have just bought the macpro and I am running boot camp on it. I am a little computer illiterate so please bear with me Everything is now working perfectly except that I can't seem to get my second monitor working in XP mode. The option for it doesn't exist under "right click - properties and then settings"I have looked online and it looks like my PCI? device has something to do with this. I know that everything is working great on the system except that PCI has the yellow question mark beside it. I don't know what PCI is, but if it is my problem,
I have a Win XP SP2 desktop. I lost use of the optical drives a while ago (both the factory DVDROM and a DVD Burner that I installed). When I tried to turn it on, I found that my keyboard (which worked before) does not work on my login screen (I have password protection on the alt logon...the one with just the username and a password box I booted into Ubuntu from a Live CD (I can do anything before Windows loads). Everything worked fine.
My computer has automatic update on it but it hasent been updateing lately so i went to windows update and found all the new updates for my computer and clicked "install New Updates" and it went to the download screen and said "Error Download Failure"
Although I used to have access on the net, suddenly for no apparent reason it's gone. I even "killed" Zonealarm from my system but nothing happened. It's gone.
I had a windows auto update shield icon appear I clicked it and downloaded the update. after it downloaded it said I needed to restart computer..click here. I did and my computer would not restart or start black screen would click down seconds and try again but it would not start. Im'SURE the update caused this, as I have not done any other thing to cause it.I had to use system recover and LOST everthing and now I can't get back online till Monday I need a internet tech to come out because I can't get back on.
I tried to update my BIOS on my Acer AOA150 Netbook (I know, terrible idea, I wanted it to be updated in case I used a 9 cell battery). I downloaded the BIOS, version 3310, from http://global-download.acer.com/GDFi...&LC=en&SC=PA_7
I clicked on one of the readme files and it said to click on one of the executable files included in the download and to then click "sure." Once I clicked sure, my computer immediately shut down. I tried to turn it on after only about 5 seconds. It simply will not start up completely but I *can* get to the F2 screen. If I choose not to go with the F2 option, the normal Windows XP flashing image will come up, except it flashes slightly slower than normal. Then, right before the screen can display my various accounts to start windows, the netbook completely shuts off. This is an Acer AOA 150 model netbook. I downloaded the BIOS.
I may have tried to turn it on while the computer was still trying to flash the BIOS. Or, I just messed up from the start by trying to do it from Windows.
Every night my computer links with Microsoft and in the morning it tells me that it has updates to install. I click the yellow shield to install and when it finishes I reboot the computer. Now here comes the problem, then it does the same thing again with exactly the same updates. I have checked by going with the custom rather than the easy install and the updates are the same ones each time
I'm having this weird problem in my computer's date and time. Its adding 100 years randomly, because of that I have to set it to the right date because other applications won't work with that time and date. And when I say randomly, meaning you don't know when it will change the date and time.
I've got xp without sp's. Went to run windows update. It started it's download, I believe installing sp2. About 3/4's of the way through it locked up. The computer was froze. I ctr-alt-del to get task manager but nothing happened. So I waited awhile longer and still nothing. So I rebooted the comp. Now everytime I go to windows update through help & support or through mc's site, even just clicking on the link windows update help at mc's site locks up the computer. I have to end task to get the comp running again. I've searched high and low over the internet for the answer, ran spybot, virus scan, and even reloaded xp. Which when i did that and it asked for registration info i filled it out and sent it and it too locked up the comp.

And how can I get rid of this virus or is there any other way to fix this problem?
On my portable computer on which I have made a briefcase, I moved some files into it. When I try to update, hoping it will update my home computer, it say some files are read-only and these files were not updated. It is only the files I move in. When I check properties on the individual files, it say they are not read-only. When I check properties on the folders in the briefcase however, the read-only is checked and when I uncheck and go back in, it still is read-only. I am using XP Home Edition.
I tried to update my Acer laptop and I get a message "files required to use windows update are no longer registered or installed on your computer" There is then a radio button filled in and a "proceed" buuton to download and register the files. It then churns a percentage thing fro 0 to 100% and then I end up on the normal download page which I was on before, I hit "express - recommended" and I get the message "files required.........." again. And thus it never ends. After spending money on Microsofts premium call line I am told to contact Acer
I decided to actually run windows updates for once, and I did, it said it was upgrading to windows XP SP3. But then after a while it became extremely slow and I couldn't run anything in the background, the bar was half way through so I left the computer on over night, to find in the morning that the updates were still not finished and the bar was still halfway. The updates were still happening though as different file names like "installing blahblah.dll" were coming up every 10 or so seconds. It's been updating for about 12 hours now and the computers basically frozen and is so slow I can't do anything. I don't want to shut down my computer as I know that's a bad thing to do during windows service pack updates, but what else can I do? This SP update has been going on all night and the bar hasn't moved at all. Should I just shut down/restart the computer and let it restore on startup? It did say at the beginning of the updates that it was backing up my files, and if it didn't I could do system restore. OR, should I just leave my computer on untill it finishes?
The little windows updater appeared at the bottom of my screen so I allowed the update to continue. When it did, a window came up to install the update (I thought it was wierd at the time because it looked like a non windows looking update), however I let it finish and then my computer just froze...
I rebooted and now when it gets to the windows loading screen I get a blue screen that says REGISTRY ERROR Below that, the exact error is STOP: 0x000000051 (0x0000001, 0xE1777008, 0x0134A000, 0x0000001D6) Is there anyway I can try and do windows restore or backup my files in any way? I have tried every possible boot option (safe mode etc...) and it does the same thing. I can't afford to reformat
I ran an update recently, as well as installed some new drivers (ATI Catalyst and Logitech Webcam drivers). Since then, every two days or so (I suppose something crashes) drwtsn32.exe and drwin.exe (and I think rundll32) boot a billion copies of themselves and continually screw up. How do I disable Dr. Watson? It's really bugging the hell out of me, and it's not like I ever use Dr. Watson's error reports.
I never upgraded my bios before I checked the compaq site and don't see any updates. I ran the program called everest and it told me to upgrade my bios because it was outdated. I don't know what to do because I ran various programs and they show that my bios is unknown. My computer is randomly freezing that is why i am trying to update bios, i don't think it has to do with overheating or psu problems or ram issues. I think it is with my bios.Compaq 5002US Windows XP PRO AMD Duron Processor 801 MHz 192 mb ram 8 mb nvidia vanta lt graphics card.
I believe that the initial problem was caused by the computer being shut down when it was in the middle of an update. Error message: Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM I followed the Windows instructions "How to recover from a corrupted registry.." Started the Recovery Console, created a tmp folder, backed up registry files to a new location, deleted exising registry files location, copy the registry files from the repair folder to System32config folder.
Downloaded what I thought what is an update... now my computer is freezing and running slow, denying access to programs.I have windows 2000 professional and a microsoft (or at least what I thought was a microsoft) update popped up. I went ahead and downloaded and that is when the problems started. Can anyone help? Did I download a virus?
I download, installed and restarted XP after installing SP2 fine. I then logged back onto windows update to install remaining updates.they were downloaded and installing when I left. I expected the computer to need to be rebooted and would be fine when updates have finished. Got a text message later this evening from sister saying that all the computer does now is having a black screen? What has gone wrong? How can I solve it? We are running xp home edition on a machines PC.
Recently, My main computer has been put through a Mozilla Firefox update. It took the best part of 5 hours since it hadn't been through an update in ages. Since the update however, the application "My Computer" refuses to start. Whenever i click on my computer, the screen draws back to the picture, the start bar disappears, and so does all the icons on the desktop. And nothing else happens after that.
When I try to put my computer on standby the following message appears: "The device driver for the Communications Port (COM1) device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If problem persists, you may need to update the driver." I believe I need to install an updated driver for my display adapter. However, I am having difficulty locating an appropriate download (for no fee, f possible). Could someone point me in the right direction?
For over a month now, my Window Update program has been firing off multiple times per day telling me there are updates to install. These updates are always SilverLight and Redemption. I run the install, it says everything was installed, but an hour of so later, it tells me there is another install, that just so happens to be the same two files. Here is another clue: If the install runs while I am shutting the computer down, it never ends installing; I have to manually reboot.
My computer has been ok until I downloaded an update version of my Video Card. Now it is very slow and it freezes up until I press Alt/Control/Del. Then I have to close a window. I will work then.
i have an icon from microsoft.saids it has updates to install for microsoft office, update service pack 3.the only thing is it won't update.and the icon won't go away until it gets updated .plus norton keeps giving me a box saids norton can't update feature.to uninstall norton than reinstall.now my son did up my whole computer so i am afraid to really touch anything.
"Install the ActiveX control required to view the website," but I don't get the bar saying to install it. None of the troubleshooting tips were relevant.
After installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.
wen i turn on my laptop it keeps goin on 3 of 3 updates but does not install updates .then turns of an repeats all over again .an wont recignise cd/reboot factory instalationhelp
I recently formated and restored windows to how it was when I bought it. Everything was ok except for updating using the Windows Update feature. I have it on, but when I go to the updating windows its not doing anything. Its suposte to scan, but its not scanning since it takes forever. On my other computer, it works in seconds.
