Nov 26, 2009Although I used to have access on the net, suddenly for no apparent reason it's gone. I even "killed" Zonealarm from my system but nothing happened. It's gone.

View 2 RepliesCan't open IE, control panel, Explore (file manager), My Computer (basically, anything that uses IE) - everything else (including Outlook Express) is ok.The Catch - It works in safe mode Have tried (and failed!):
1) Scanning for viruses - none (HouseCall and Norton scans)
2) Scanning for parasites - none of any consequence (used Spybot)
3) Delete id and create new id (thought maybe the logon id became corrupt especially since it seems to work ok in safe mode)
4) Installed Netscape. Downloaded and reinstalled IE - didn't help.
5) Checked registry - can't find anything that looks out of place...but then again...it IS the registry and I am sure it has to be in there somewhere!
6) Checked running services and processes - nothing out of the ordinary.
Seems as though something may have come in WITH the SP2 update -- or that access settings to IE, My Computer, etc. have changed. I have tried all I can think of and can't find the fix for this. Is there a way to UNINSTALL SP2 and restore my settings from 8:00 a.m. yesterday morning? I can get into "remove and install programs" by backdooring it but the SP2 isn't appearing there.
I downloaded ZoneAlarm and Spybot S&D. Things worked ok until I got a little tired of all the ZA balloons popping up and went in to try to lessen the frequency of them. Afterwards, I got to where I couldn't access things that I had before the attempted change. I used "system restore" back to "pre-installation of ZA and Spybot". Things seem to be normal but I feel that I do need (i am told) of the protection that the two downloads offer. Now when I try to download ZA and Spybot and try to install from my desktop, a window appears saying that the install is corrupt.
How can I get a good install of each of these? If I can get them back, I'll just click the balloons off my screen, no matter how many times they appear. I do have a lot of posts prior to this one ( Re: Spyware Infection[in this section-3 to 4 days ago]). I am VERY computer challanged (as a few Moderators here know by now) so instructions need to be simple.
I am experiencing an odd problem. I have added my pc via a network card and cable to my son's computer. He has broadband access to the internet and the intention was for my pc to be able to share this access. However, I frequently find that my pc will not use the network system to connect to the internet but can only do it via dial up even though my sons's pc is permenantly on and connected. When it does use the network broadband works well.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is my first time posting on this forum. Im at my last resort. On Wednesday, Oct.10, 2007 windows did an automatic update that contained something called Software Distribution System 3.0. This update has killed my computer. The computer will only work properly in safe mode. I tried to do a system restore but my computer gives a message Cannot restore to specified date, No changes have been made.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy computer is on a dual boot system. In case that makes a diffrence but shouldn't. It has been working fine. No problems. I disabled the updates because I didn't like them taking so much time and I didn't want any problems till I could back up the whole dual boot thing. I don't have the software yet. But despite me turning off the updates, they reactivated themselves somehow and updated from Windows (Windows updater that I got with Service Pack 2). Now my games and alot of other software no longer work, installations won't finish, media only plays half the time. its all messed up. I have Norton and Spy Sweeper so I doubt it was any of that and their scans don't show anything. Plus it did come from windows in the windows updater. Does anyone know what I can do? This really makes me mad. I work for over a month setting this whole dual boot and redoing this computer and the updates just screwed it all up.

The option for it doesn't exist under "right click - properties and then settings"I have looked online and it looks like my PCI? device has something to do with this. I know that everything is working great on the system except that PCI has the yellow question mark beside it. I don't know what PCI is, but if it is my problem,

View 4 Replies View RelatedLet me first start off by saying, I've recently installed the Service Pack 2 for Windows XP and no problems. (yet) Anyways, with it, there is a firewall available. Is it safer than ZoneAlarm for example? I don't know if I can trust it.
View 10 Replies View RelatedAfter long periods of my internet connection being idle (2+ hours usually), all programs requiring internet access are unable to connect. By idle I mean I leave to run some errands with no programs other than Zone Alarm running. My DSL modem still has all lights flashing and active. There are a couple other scenarios where this occurs as well. Ex. I'm playing WoW for extended periods but not using the internet through any other program, then upon alt-tabbing no other applications are able to connect to the internet even though WoW is still connected and functioning. Rebooting the router/modem doesn't fix it, but rebooting the comp does.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI think that I have a virus which is stopping me from 1) Installing Norton Internet Security 2005 properly, and 2) Stopping me from accessing all anti-virus related sites, for example - www.symantec.com, ww.grisoft.com, www.pandasoftware.com, and when i tried to download AVG 6.0 from another site which was unrelated to antivirus, I found that I could access the site but the download failed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe first time I log in after I turn on my computer, I can't run anything that I have a shortcut for on the desktop, because it will freeze for a while. The reason for this is probably too many things starting with the computer at start-up.I regularly scan for spyware with Spybot, and rarely get anything. I also have ZoneAlarm as my firewall.

Identification: None Application: svchost.exe Source IP: 0.0.0.0:Port 135 I click : "remember this setting" [or I used to] and it does NOT remember - it comes up every time.I've tried rooting around in Zonealarm to figure out how to turn this off - no luck. View 5 Replies View RelatedI was browsing the internet and suddenly my internet stopped receiving packets and wouldn't work at all. So I restarted my computer and then as soon as I connected, ZoneAlarm appeared with a message saying:
ZoneAlarm Security Alert - Dangerous Behaviour:DrWatson Postmortem debugger is trying to communicate with SVCHOST.exe -k netsvcs by opening its process.
Running win 2000 pro SP4. every time i reboot, certain program settings are lost. for example, my zonealarm settings are lost, and all program net access authorizations have to be re-authorized, when the programs attempt to connect to the net. It will not remember the "always use this answer" option, that you can check in zonealarm to keep from having to continue to re-authorize the program each time it is run. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

I just put together a new computer with a ASUS P5P800 motherboard, 1gb Ram, 200gb hard drive. AMI BIOS, Marvell 88E8001 GB LAN controller (built in NIC) and I am unable to access the Internet. Device manager lists the Network adapter and I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. It also hangs whenever I try to use dialup. It dials and hangs. Tested modem in Control panel and I can Query the modem fine. I suspect that it has to do with my BIOS settings, but I cannot figure it out. I am running WinXP Pro, SP1.
