When CPU usage gets to 100% it will shutdown without notice. I think it may be because I need to run disk clean up, not sure. This computer is old and I fixed it myself, that's why I think running disk cleanup will help, but when i run disk cleanup my usage goes right up to 100%.

View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter my computer finishes the boot process, I start Windows task manager and click on the processes tab. I scroll the listing and at the end I find "System Idle Process is cycling CPU usage at 25,44, and 98 percent within an approximate four second sequence. I do this because I normaly boot and try to run Outlook Express to no avail and I am trying to find out the problem. When I try to open Outlook Express I always get the following dialog. "Outlook Express could not be started because another instance of it is still running on your computer. Please log off of windows and then restart Outlook Express. If the problem persists, save your work and then restart your computer." I go to start and click on Log Off. I wait two minutes and try to start Outlook Express. I get the message the application failed to initialize as the workstation is shutting down! I try to restart the computer but it won't restart or even shut down. Any application I then try to start results in the message "the application failed to initialize as the workstation is shutting down!" I have to Power off the computer.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a compaq(aka junk box) 3.2 celeron(crap) PC.It just started running like a 95 machine a few days ago. I did ctl, alt del and got a look at proceses running its system, not system idle. It runs at 99-97. I look at cpu usage its maxed never moves. i did a back up of my pictures to disc and did a "destructive" windows reinstall from the recovery menu seeing as cheap compaq crap doesnt give me a windows disc so i can do it the old fasioned way. Is the destructive reformat doing a full format. i prefer zero filling a drive with issues like this. what else could make it do this 100% usage thing right out the door when i install windows.

My task manager shows my 'system' resource using 60,996k of memory. The CPU usage is not high (basically absent) and the memory usage stays static at 60,996 regardless of what I do (even after a reboot). I need to know why this is happening! Thanks in advance...

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy new system has an unusually high level of cpu usage after startup. Windows was only installed a week ago and I haven't installed much software on this yet. Today was the first day I got it online and all I did was install the newest windows updates. The only things I've installed in it are nero, omega radeon drivers, videolan media player, winamp, and adobe.I've looked at the hijack log and I don't see anything out of the ordinary. The odd thing is, the cpu usage isn't constant, it ranges from 30%-50% even when nothing is running.

It's not "system idle proccess" just system.After installing right off the xp pro disk, all i did was install the updates up to and through SP2, my motherboard drivers, video drivers, winamp and AIM. Other than that, nothing else has been done, yet system is still using all free cpu.I checked to make sure all drivers were current.

If I use Windows Explorer to go deeper than the first level of any tree, CPU usage goes to 100% and stays there. I've disabled System Restore because it wouldn't let me go back in time anyway and this program is a known resource gobbler. Didn't help. I've attached a hijackthis logfile to see if anyone recognizes a Trojan, etc. I would appreciate any help at all.
I suspect that my PC is infected with Vundo. Ran FixVundo (Symantec Trojan.Vundo Removal Tool 1.5.0)in safemode but was not detected.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI use xp pro and have Microsoft PLUS installed wich gives me a few extra themes to choose from. Everything works great except when i log in or out of windows i dont get any sounds, no matter what theme i use. It used to work fine and i am not sure exactly when it stopped.
I checked my sounds configuration and i can play the start up and shutdown sounds by testing them but they wont work when actually starting or shutting down windows. Even if i just use the regular XP theme i still dont get any sound.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm not too knowledgeable about the technical side of computing, so please bear with me.I'm running Windows XP Professional (SP2) on an AMD Athlon XP 3200+. My grandson showed me a game called Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, which I fell in love with and subsequently bought for my own computer. As I only had 'on board' graphics, the game obviously wouldn't run, so I bought an Nvidia 6200 graphics card.Following the instructions which came with it, I installed the card successfully. The only thing I couldn't do was disable the 'on board' graphics, but as my computer recognised the new card automatically, I went ahead and installed the driver.The new card didn't need an extra power source, as there was no connector on it. Incidentally, I did find the 'on board' graphics in the System > Properties list, but nothing happens when I click on it, so I assume I can't disable it.
Everything appeared to work well and I got the Roller Coaster game up and running beautifully.Some time later, after I had closed the game and gone on to other things, I needed to restart my computer, so I went through the usual restart sequence.Things went well at first but some way through the Windows XP loading screen, where the little blue bars scroll across, my computer simply switched off, totally! I tried again (obviously from a cold boot this time), but the same thing happened.To cut a long story short, I eventually removed the new card, and restored my system to a safe point, and it's now running perfectly again, although I can't play my game now.I'd be really grateful for any advice you can offer as to what the problem might be, as I want to build some more roller coasters!
When shutting down my laptop (Toshiba Satellite, Windows XP), I get the "end program" box that says MCCWSA will not shut down. This box stays on screen until I click end now. This is something that started recently and I can shut down by clicking the "end now" button. If I don't click the end now button the computer does not shut down. This is very annoying. It seems to have started when I cannot get online and a verizon box pops up and asks if I wish for them to check my computer. When I say yes they do and tell me everything is ok. This is a waste.
View 7 Replies View Relatedthe CPU would peg at 100% on a program launch and drag the machine to ahalt. Once the program was up and running, everything was back tonormal. Keep in mind that this is NOT just a "slow computer" - it wasbrand-new behavior that started for no reason I could discern (I didn'tmake any hardware or software changes before the problem cropped up).I've run a couple of antivirus programs and adware cleaners and they've found nothing. I've used utilities from sysinternals.com to look at what's going on and I can't see anything strange.
I'm having problems simply launching applications. If I attempt to launch an application, it will show up in Task Manager (but not in the UI), but will almost always stop loading at ~5MB in memory (usually from about 4.7 to 5.7MB). Every once in a while, the program will start without a hitch, but it's rare. The one somewhat (but not entirely) consistent thing I've been able to find is that if I kill another program, I can then start the program I was trying to start (again, I have 1GB of RAM in this machine and plenty free, so it's not a memory problem).
New (3 months) Dell Vostro 1000 with Windows XP Professional. Last few days when trying to shut down I'm getting an error message "Device 10 Notification" with the option to cancel or end task. Either choice leads me to the same issue that the program is not responding. Sometimes the computer goes ahead and shuts down anyway, other times I have to shut down without ending the program.

When I try to open up various things in my documents or on my external hard drive, the same thing happens. I have deleted things that I no longer use, I have run a malware program twice, and I got a new antivirus program (Symantec) and ran it three times. This has not fixed the problem. I have downloaded Mozilla Firefox, and that works well for the Internet, but I still cant open other windows without them giving me an error and closing shortly after. It is driving me crazy
