Jan 15, 2008
My problem is extremely slow performance, and taskmanager shows 95-100% cpu consumption almost all of the time. Even as I type in this textbox the system is lagging. I've used Spybots S&D,

Just recently, I noticed my computer acting a little slow than normal so I went to check my task manager. I found out that my total physical memory was "halved". I have 1GB of RAM installed but the task manager only shows half of it, 512MB. I went to check msinfo and it showed that I had 1GB of RAM installed. This problem occurs on a somewhat random basis, sometimes it shows I have 1GB of RAM installed sometimes not. In some applications like CCleaner, it also reflects the same RAM info as my task manager.Any permanent workaround for this problem? Or is this a hardware fault? When this problem occurs, my pc is not making full use of my 1GB of ram, hence the sluggish performance I noticed as of late. Below are screenshots to illustrate what I mean.

My computer has been quite slow this past few days and my friend said low disk space can reduce a computer's performance. I installed Windows XP in a 20GB partition and it has 3GB free space left.

First Post I have a Dell Latitude 810 XP Pro (SP3) 2 meg ram...about 50% HD unusedI have a problem with the CPU useage staying at (100%)even when I close all apps. The Windows Task Manager shows "scvhost.exe System100%" As long as I uninstall Norton I can get some e-mail response but really slow.I spent time yesterday with Dell "pay as you need" they had me run a Malware program (found five culprits) and a Spyware program (found 80 cookies)...took a lot of apps off my start menu...had me go to SP3...had me go to IE8. When done the Widows Task Manager showed appropriate low use % and all worked fine.

i know this has been posted before but none of the solutions have worked for me. i have a toshiba satellite laptop. it started running extremely slow and the cpu usage is at 100% all the time. i reformatted and reinstalled windows xp but that didn't solve the problem. i noticed when i was reinstalling windows xp, it was going slowly as it did before, and i hadn't even started up windows yet. when i would click the next button when installing it would do the same slow lagging thing. i tried everything when i did start windows too. i tried deleting the explorer.exe process and retyping it in

I'm scared to try and interpret for my own use. I have 81 processes running and have no idea which ones I can disable and which ones to not. I'm always nervous about messing with that. But, am I right in thinking that disabling something in the MSCONFIG thing at startup won't affect the program??? Can you still get to it? It just won't start up automatically, right? So, could I hurt anything if I disabled alot? So, how could I give you a list of all the processes running? I'm also having a problem with the xp update. I'm always showing that I need to update, but when I do this one part always fails. Here is what it says.
Security Update for Microsoft.net framework, Version 1.1 Service KB928366 didn't update. I'm not sure why, but it won't ever update. Also, in AOL I get an error message constantly which says this: A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to debug. Line:? Error: Object Expected. I have no idea what that means and what or how to debug. I have tried repeatedly to uninstall and reinstall AOL but it keeps happening. Does anyone know what that means.

When I am attempting to use Photoshop I must first shut down any other application. Even with everything else shut down PS runs extremely slowly this, in turn, limits my productivity. If I attempt to open another program the system invariably slows down even more and often simply freezes without any error message. I must then shut down the system and reboot.

I have been trying to find the cause of a general 'sluggishness' with my PC.
Startup takes about 1.5 minutes; during this time the screen will go black (not just blank!) for about 15 seconds. The windows startup music staggers. Every task results in long delays accompanied by ferocious hard disc activity.
I have tried many things but I have run out of tricks.
The problem(s) seemed to start/coincide with a few things - my son used a Cd based version of Linux; I reinstalled the graphics driver as icons were taking longer to create on-screen than before; I switched from Outlook Express to MS Outlook.
Have installed, updated and run Norton antivurus & firewall, Spy Bot and Ad aware.

WinXP Home, SP2, P3 498, 256 RAM
Everything seems much slower lately. Opening Outlook Express, IE, Netscape, MS Office programs, etc. all open very slowly. I've been getting messages about Virtual Memory. I don't remember exactly what the message was, but I'm looking for ways to speed things up. I deleted ALL temp files.
Here is the HiJackThis log:

PC runs smoothly but at times it slows down gradually.I ve checked my start up program but it's ok,scan&fix registry errors and remove all spyware and adware using the tools spyware doctor and noadware. One strange thing is After I scan my PC with these tools,a severe adware called 'activshopper' has been found and I remove it.But after some time I scan my PC again, this adware tends to appear in my system again. How do I remove completely?I hereby would like to present a logfile of hijackthis to see if my PC has any major errors or infected.Below shows:

A Dell Dimension 2400 PC with a Pentium 4 processor; 38 GB hard drive and 256K RAM. I use Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 with Service Pack 3 installed. The heaviest used application is Internet Explorer (connected via a wireless network) and Microsoft Outlook. I also have McAfee Security Center installed with Virus Scan, Personal Firewall and Anti-Spam installed and operational.
Computer has been "dog slow" for the past six months or so and I can't fathom why as I haven't changed anything on my computer. I have gotten a few pop-up windows recently on my task bar stating that "Virtual Memory is low. Windows will attempt to fix." However, I have not seen any improvement in my computer's performance.

I installed a version of Windows XP that came in the startup cd's for my laptop. Now my computer runs incredibly slow, much slower than before. Does this have to do with the version that I installed? Can I do
anything to fix it without having to install anotehr XP version?

I have a strange problem in that each day I have to reboot my computer. It works fine all day but when I use it the next morning the response of the machine is slow. For example just clicking on the start button takes a while to display. I have noticed a similar problem when I run Azereus. After I have run that program it seems to affect the rate at which my display responds. Reboot solves the problem but I would like to get to the root cause of this instead or trying to reinstall.

After reformatted pc running XP Prof' version 2002 Service pk2 on a pentium3 935mhz 128ram. It appears to struggle at times even simply moving through windows. Its a very clean system running Nortons and Ad Watch (adaware) and I do regular maintenence. (clear cookies, cache, temp files , defrag etc)I thought perhaps the 128ram was not enough as I have been told the 935mhz should be sufficient. Also Nortons loads up on startup and this takes far too long (several minutes) Is there any way of speeding up start up?I did do a bit of investigating in device manager and upon checking all the properties of the hardware I came up with no drivers installed for these components listed below. Is this normal?

My tablet PC has been running pretty slow for no apparent reason. I haven't seen any process in Task Manager eating up my memory or CPU but the Performance tab shows my CPU usage pegged at 100% and I've always been diligent about keeping my startup list clean and limited to the essentials. I also haven't installed or done anything different to my computer that should have caused this.

I have run Norton, Adaware and spybot. They ocassionally find tracking cookies, but nothing that looks too bad to me. One thing I did notice is that, with no programs running, I'm using 260Mb of memory.
Here is the log file:

I'm on WinXP. I have a 2.4GHz PC. It used to take just 40 seconds to boot up my computer. Now it takes at least 7 minutes and then if I try and open Outlook, another 5 minutes. It was working fine a week ago, and oddly enough, this sluggish performance seems to be at the same time I installed a bunch of Windows updates.
I try and run Norton to check for viruses, or burn a DVD, everything works okay until about 5 minutes into it, and then suddenly I can no longer move the mouse and everything seems to be hung up. I can't even do a ctrl-alt-delete.
I'm not sure how to proceed. If need be, I am willing to back up all my files and initialize the hard drive and start with a clean slate, but I'd prefer not to.
1) Should I re-install Windows? It says the version on my CD is older than what's on my computer, and I think it said I should back up my files.
2) Should I run hi-jack this? Never run that before but maybe someone can see something that doesn't look right.
3) Is there a good free utility out there that can help diagnose the performance issue?
4) I know I have too many processes running in the background at any given time, and I'm not entirely sure which ones are necessary. Maybe some process in the background is slowing everything down?
I haven't been able to run Norton or anti-spyware, because the computer just stalls several minutes into the scan. I'm just thinking now, maybe I should run in Safe Mode to see if I can run Norton or Ad Aware?

Machine is having extremely slow performance (launching applications, navigating in windows explorer, etc), where is the first place you all look for the problem? Using task manager or process explorer, it shows that the CPU is about 95% idle. RAM usage is normal, with plenty available. But opening firefox might take 3 minutes. Opening a Photoshop file takes 3 minutes. All way too long. But my processor seems like it's never taxed.
If my processor isn't in use, and there is plenty of available memory, where else would you look? The computer is virus free, and hasn't had a virus issue on it. I know that this is a very general question, but where else would you all start looking? Drivers? Periferals? Does anyone have a checklist or procedure they use when looking into issues like this?

My computer is performing extremely slow and sometimes it freezes temporarily (it wasn't this slow in the past!). I installed Norton Internet Security 2010 thinking that a virus might be the problem but it's still slow. I tried upgrading the RAM from 256 to 512 MB (since it's an old PC: Pentium III, running XP) but it didn't work. After I run a free registry booster online, this website (Microsoft certified) is telling me that to fix all my slow performance problems in my PC I need to purchase a complete registry boost scan for $29.99. should I trust this?

I am looking to buy a core i3 processor but i've heard that it does not support windows xp. Now i've searched the internet only to get more confused. Some say it works fine while others say it does work but pretty slow. The problem is i can live without i3 but not xp as i work on Oracle that doesn't support windows 7 or vista.
