Getting Slow Disk Space Notification And Reduced System Performance?
Sep 12, 2010
My computer has been quite slow this past few days and my friend said low disk space can reduce a computer's performance. I installed Windows XP in a 20GB partition and it has 3GB free space left.

I'm running window xp, and these folders are taking up a lot space on my hard disk, hence I would like to know is it ok to delete all these folders? I have attached the image with this post, please take a look. Also does it have any side effects after deleting them?

my C drive is showing some strange behavior these days. The free space in the C drive is getting reduced. C drive is allocated 10GB.the total space used by all the Files and folders installed in C drive is 5.2GB.but it says 9.2GB through Properties. and the worst thing is the free space is getting reduced each day.I have turned OFF system restore on all drives.but still what is the reason for this peculiar behavior?if this continues I could not even BOOT the system because of NO SPACE in C drive

Okay, I need to know if I have a virus/trojan, and if I do, how to get rid of it.So, right now there has been some problems my PC. The minor thing is that my tool bar now has a new item that says that I have "reduced performance"due to spyware. It suggests I download a spyware tool.My homepage has also been messed up. Normaly, my homepage is Yahoo. Now, it takes me to this site: http://theuptodatesafety.net/ I know my homepage is still registered to yahoo, as when I start Internet explorer, it first goes to yahoo, then gets diverted to the link. I never reach yahoo, but I see the link change

Just recently, I noticed my computer acting a little slow than normal so I went to check my task manager. I found out that my total physical memory was "halved". I have 1GB of RAM installed but the task manager only shows half of it, 512MB. I went to check msinfo and it showed that I had 1GB of RAM installed. This problem occurs on a somewhat random basis, sometimes it shows I have 1GB of RAM installed sometimes not. In some applications like CCleaner, it also reflects the same RAM info as my task manager.Any permanent workaround for this problem? Or is this a hardware fault? When this problem occurs, my pc is not making full use of my 1GB of ram, hence the sluggish performance I noticed as of late. Below are screenshots to illustrate what I mean.

I am running Windows XP SP1. I recently acquired a virus and my only option was to run a system recovery (not a restore but a recovery) It was the simple kind not the destructive one that erases everything. So my files are all still intact but before the recovery I had anywhere from 17-20GB of hard drive space. Afterwards I only have 7. What could have happened and is there anyway I can recover the missing space?

I just had Win XP Pro installed on my machine. Primary HD is 80 GB. The drive previously ran Win 98 SE. The tech formatted it and installed Win XP Pro. System runs fine and all appears to function OK. However, the drive capacity is not accurately displayed anywhere in the system (other than BIOS). I'm trying to find out how I can have the drive space accurately displayed.

When I am attempting to use Photoshop I must first shut down any other application. Even with everything else shut down PS runs extremely slowly this, in turn, limits my productivity. If I attempt to open another program the system invariably slows down even more and often simply freezes without any error message. I must then shut down the system and reboot.

A folder named "System Volume Information" has been created in each drive (C:,D:,E:,F:)and consuming significant disk space day by day. Whether deleting these folders will create any problem. Any other technique to stop increasing the size of these folders ? Please suggest.Presently consuming more than 3 GB in total. Sometimes I need system restore to speed up the PC (besides other registry tools )therefore this function is enabled in the system.

I don't get it. the more i go on, the more and more disk space seems to vanish into thin air. xp usually takes a couple of gigs up on the hard disk, right? maybe 5 gigs at the very most. i've got 8 gigs taken up by videos in one folder. the programs i've got installed are negligable. the program files folder is 500mb. and yet my disk only has 20 gigs spare on a 40 gig hard disk. i've looked in every folder on the hard disk and i simply can't find any folders with anything of any great size in it. i've defragged the hard drive.

how to expand the disk space that I have. The primary C drive has the OS on it and it is only about 14GB, and my entire disk is about 50GB, the unallocated space is about 34 GB. I have tried to expand the primary partition unsuccessfully. Do I have to reload the entire OS ? I do not have the origional disk to reload the OS. It is a sony PCG-CRT160 computer with 500 mb ram and approximately a 50 GB primary drive that was partitioned when I got it.

I have been trying to find the cause of a general 'sluggishness' with my PC. Startup takes about 1.5 minutes; during this time the screen will go black (not just blank!) for about 15 seconds. The windows startup music staggers. Every task results in long delays accompanied by ferocious hard disc activity. I have tried many things but I have run out of tricks. The problem(s) seemed to start/coincide with a few things - my son used a Cd based version of Linux; I reinstalled the graphics driver as icons were taking longer to create on-screen than before; I switched from Outlook Express to MS Outlook. Have installed, updated and run Norton antivurus & firewall, Spy Bot and Ad aware.

WinXP Home, SP2, P3 498, 256 RAM Everything seems much slower lately. Opening Outlook Express, IE, Netscape, MS Office programs, etc. all open very slowly. I've been getting messages about Virtual Memory. I don't remember exactly what the message was, but I'm looking for ways to speed things up. I deleted ALL temp files. PC runs smoothly but at times it slows down gradually.I ve checked my start up program but it's ok,scan&fix registry errors and remove all spyware and adware using the tools spyware doctor and noadware. One strange thing is After I scan my PC with these tools,a severe adware called 'activshopper' has been found and I remove it.But after some time I scan my PC again, this adware tends to appear in my system again. How do I remove completely?I hereby would like to present a logfile of hijackthis to see if my PC has any major errors or infected.Below shows: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 5:03:46 PM, on 10/18/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:WINDOWSSystem32smss.exe C:WINDOWSsystem32csrss.exe C:WINDOWSsystem32winlogon.exe C:WINDOWSsystem32services.exe C:WINDOWSsystem32lsass.exe C:WINDOWSsystem32svchost.exe C:WINDOWSsystem32svchost.exe C:WINDOWSSystem32svchost.exe C:WINDOWSsystem32svchost.exe C:WINDOWSsystem32svchost.exe C:WINDOWSsystem32spoolsv.exe C:WINDOWSExplorer.EXE C:Program FilesJavajre1.5.0_06injusched.exe C:Program FilesMUSICMATCHMUSICMATCH Jukeboxmm_tray.exe C:Program FilesMusicMatchMusicMatch Jukeboxmmtask.exe C:Program FilesSpyware Doctorsdhelp.exe C:Program FilesSpyware Doctorswdoctor.exe C:Program FilesLogitechDesktop Messenger8876480ProgramLogitechDesktopMessenger.exe C:Program FilesLogitechSetPointSetPoint.exe C:Program FilesCommon FilesLogitechKHALKHALMNPR.EXE C:WINDOWSSystem32alg.exe C:WINDOWSsystem32wscntfy.exe C:Program FilesInternet ExplorerIEXPLORE.EXE C:Program FilesHijackthisHijackThis.exe R0 - A Dell Dimension 2400 PC with a Pentium 4 processor; 38 GB hard drive and 256K RAM. I use Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 with Service Pack 3 installed. The heaviest used application is Internet Explorer (connected via a wireless network) and Microsoft Outlook. I also have McAfee Security Center installed with Virus Scan, Personal Firewall and Anti-Spam installed and operational. Computer has been "dog slow" for the past six months or so and I can't fathom why as I haven't changed anything on my computer. I have gotten a few pop-up windows recently on my task bar stating that "Virtual Memory is low. Windows will attempt to fix." However, I have not seen any improvement in my computer's performance.

I installed a version of Windows XP that came in the startup cd's for my laptop. Now my computer runs incredibly slow, much slower than before. Does this have to do with the version that I installed? Can I do anything to fix it without having to install anotehr XP version?

I have a strange problem in that each day I have to reboot my computer. It works fine all day but when I use it the next morning the response of the machine is slow. For example just clicking on the start button takes a while to display. I have noticed a similar problem when I run Azereus. After I have run that program it seems to affect the rate at which my display responds. Reboot solves the problem but I would like to get to the root cause of this instead or trying to reinstall. After reformatted pc running XP Prof' version 2002 Service pk2 on a pentium3 935mhz 128ram. It appears to struggle at times even simply moving through windows. Its a very clean system running Nortons and Ad Watch (adaware) and I do regular maintenence. (clear cookies, cache, temp files , defrag etc)I thought perhaps the 128ram was not enough as I have been told the 935mhz should be sufficient. Also Nortons loads up on startup and this takes far too long (several minutes) Is there any way of speeding up start up?I did do a bit of investigating in device manager and upon checking all the properties of the hardware I came up with no drivers installed for these components listed below. Is this normal?

My tablet PC has been running pretty slow for no apparent reason. I haven't seen any process in Task Manager eating up my memory or CPU but the Performance tab shows my CPU usage pegged at 100% and I've always been diligent about keeping my startup list clean and limited to the essentials. I also haven't installed or done anything different to my computer that should have caused this.

I have run Norton, Adaware and spybot. They ocassionally find tracking cookies, but nothing that looks too bad to me. One thing I did notice is that, with no programs running, I'm using 260Mb of memory. I'm on WinXP. I have a 2.4GHz PC. It used to take just 40 seconds to boot up my computer. Now it takes at least 7 minutes and then if I try and open Outlook, another 5 minutes. It was working fine a week ago, and oddly enough, this sluggish performance seems to be at the same time I installed a bunch of Windows updates. I try and run Norton to check for viruses, or burn a DVD, everything works okay until about 5 minutes into it, and then suddenly I can no longer move the mouse and everything seems to be hung up. I can't even do a ctrl-alt-delete. I'm not sure how to proceed. If need be, I am willing to back up all my files and initialize the hard drive and start with a clean slate, but I'd prefer not to. 1) Should I re-install Windows? It says the version on my CD is older than what's on my computer, and I think it said I should back up my files. 2) Should I run hi-jack this? Never run that before but maybe someone can see something that doesn't look right. 3) Is there a good free utility out there that can help diagnose the performance issue? 4) I know I have too many processes running in the background at any given time, and I'm not entirely sure which ones are necessary. Maybe some process in the background is slowing everything down? I haven't been able to run Norton or anti-spyware, because the computer just stalls several minutes into the scan. I'm just thinking now, maybe I should run in Safe Mode to see if I can run Norton or Ad Aware?
