My pc is running a bit slow lately, got lots of stuff, too much on it.So I'd like to restore my pc back to factory settings. I have around 110 gig of stuff and I don't want to lose it. So I bought a firewire drive to back it all up on. My plan is, transfer all my data to the external hd. Then formatting my hd completley and rebooting as new, then transferring my needed data abck on to my pc.
I've never formatted before so not to sure how. My main worry is the pc not restarting. I have a start up cd that came with my pc but i have no windows xp cd it came pre installed.

Well, as the title suggests, i'm the latest in what is seemingly a long line of people having trouble attempting to perform the same task - reformatting a laptop running on Windows XP to run on a fresh, clean, smooth, lovely version of XP SP2.
I have read through every single topic with reference to what I am trying to do, and am still COMPLETELY lost. I have tried absolutely everything I can think of, my friend can think of, everything that has been suggested on various websites to no avail. I must just be doing things wrong.

have to internal HD's. One has several large important files on it, including the OS XP, the other, I am going to format and install XP on this. I am switching HD's OS, for my own reasons. Ok, so my problem is, I need to leave these big files on this drive with the current OS loaded, so I won't loose them and when I go to boot windows from the new, fresh XP, I plan to unplug the other drive, which has windows on it, so it will not attempt to boot from 2 operating systems. Can I then, after XP has booted, plug in the old XP loaded HD, to then be able to xfer the big files from that to the other, without it having a conflict? If so, then I can format that drive and I'll be set. I don't have any other way of storing these file, during this transition. (no thumb drive or anything) Sorry if i have not explain well enough.

I was wondering if there was any way of uninstalling Windows XP WITHOUT reformatting my hard drive. I have Pro and Home on my drive, and I only installed the Home because there was something wrong with my Pro, and so I installed Home to see if I could fix the problem that way. It didn't work , so I just want to get Home off of there before I do any more damage with it.

I wanted to know if it was possible to reinstall the OS on the same partition on which it was formerly installed without uninstalling the first instance and still be able to use my programs. I know it is possible to have 2 instances of XP on the same partition. I just don't know if the programs of the first instance is accessible through the second. If not, how do I make it accessible?

I've backed up everything I need (tell me if something's missing: personal notes, favorites, saved games, personal projects, software settings, software and games installations, music)Now it's time to format and install.I've read a guide about how to install XP.And I honestly don't know what comes after that.Drivers? Which drivers? Windows update? Internet connection? DX? Can you list the actions needed to be done after installing XP, sorted chronologically?

It is ironic that I am here, because I own a tech business, but I have been stumped so long that I need to go ask the big-guns.My problem: My computer was acting up.My solution: Reinstall XP.My second problem: I have a SATA drive which XP doesn't support by default. My solution: Use nLite to package my drivers into my install disc and burn a new copy.My third problem: install goes as planned, but when the computer starts up it gets to the Windows Logo loading-screen and crashes right as the blue bar enters the screen. The computer simply freezes, shuts down, reboots, and says "Windows did not shut down properly" or whatever the hell it says.So now I have no clue what to do. I know it's not the wrong drivers--I got them directly from ASUS's website and made sure it's the 32-bit Windows XP drivers.
I have tried reinstalling Windows like 10 times over the past 3 days, so I know it wasn't just a faulty install. My CD drive is 6 months old and my hard drive 2 months old. They both run perfectly, so I know it's not them.Being the genius I am, I backed up my entire hard-drive on a BKF file with a clean install!
So now I can just use the BKF file to write to my hard drive... if I had a working computer. So here's my situation: I'd accept a helpful fix for the thing above, but I don't think there will be any fixes for it that I haven't already tried. But what I really do want is some advice on how to write my BKF file to my SATA HDD. I have my SATA connected to my computer via an external USB converter-switch-like-thing, so I have access to it. The BKF is stored on my laptop's HDD, but my Laptop is Vista (ewwie). I need to know how to take the BKF file from my Vista laptop and restore it onto my SATA HDD that is attached via USB. Vista's restore capability doesn't support XP's BKF files, so I was wondering if anybody knows of a third-party application or any way to get this back up, and quickly. I'm a developer and my computer has been down for 3 days!

There was a power outage where I live today and since then my computer won't start up. I am running Windows XP Pro. When I turn it on, this is the message that I get:A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

I have a PC with Windows XP home. I am selling this PC without windows and want to format my C: drive. In the old days I would get Windows 98 to create a Bootable disk with a format command but Windows XP does not allow me to do this, I think. So what is the best way to format C: before selling my PC.

I've been having troubles recently with my pretty new laptop. It's a 3,06 ghz with 512 ram. I've been having performance related problems that where not there the first couple of months I had it. I suspect my installation of SP" for Windows XP had something to do. Now I want to format my harddrive, so I can have a fresh start on my computer, because having a 2000$ machine have such sucky performances kind of pisses me off.

I have a fast ADSL connection and a Windows XP Professional (version 2002) OS on my desktop PC. Due to a virus I caught I had to format the windows partition and reinstall all the drivers and stuff. Everything seems to work fine except for the internet. It's not that I don't have any connection but it is extremely slow, I cannot connect at all to some specific sites (such as www.blue-whitegt.com) and after a while it's completely lost. I tried updating all the drivers of my hardware, I installed the windows service pack 3, I intalled the newest java console, I checked my rooter settings (which of course are the same as they were before the format), I even turned windows firewall completely off

And do I need to download something else after I delete those, like Partition 1.

How can I unformat a flash drive? I formatted it to make it bootable to try to run feather linux which didn't work. Anyway, I am trying to get it back to where it was before. I tried HP's usb format utility, but it doesn't see it as it won't even show up in my computer. it does show up as a storage device to unplug but that is all.
