I want to format my computer. I have backed up all the files and I know I have to change the bios to boot from CD etc. When i insert the XP disc it says that the disc is an older version than the one on my computer. probably from updating XP on computer
I found some files and folders I was looking for from my computer backup but when ever I try to access them I get Folder is not assessable access denied
Hp late model with all the trimmings with windows XP.A while back my computer was screwing up so I backed up all my web pages and information into a file called File:///C/. I brought them over to my new computer, but how in the world do I get them back on line.
Is it possible to get rid of the backed up files that System Restore uses to restore. Is this confusing? Would just turning off System Restore and turning it on again get rid of the files System Restore uses as the 'old' files? What would work if thats not the case. Should I make myself clearer or do you get it.
I'm trying to install Win XP pro onto a brand new hard drive. I'm able to fully format it to NTFS without any problem. Once the format is complete, it then begins to copy over all the Windows system files from the disk to drive. It gets between 70-80% complete when it starts to encounter errors copying files over.
I've used two seperate rom drives as well as 3 different installation disks and I get the same error at the same point in time after every attempt.
Windows XP pro. lots of corrupted files which doesn't allow windows to function properly.I have windows xp pro cd with product key ready to go.How do I format the hardrive and reinstall windows?
On an XP-SP2 Home system, what XP files should be backed up to an external storage and how often should it be done? Can I use something like Backup4All which I use for none system info/files.
I got a WD "My Book Essential" 160gb external drive for Christmas, and as it does not come with backup software, I decided to try the Windows backup utility. I had to reformat the new drive from FAT32 into NTFS, and then I did a complete backup of the entire system. It asked for a diskette to create a boot disk, and then completed fine. However, when I looked at the .bkf file to see how large it was, it was 46 gb!! My hard drive on my pc that I backed up only shows 32 gb used. How could the backup file be larger than what was backed up? Is there some option/feature that I need to change?
I just performed an ASR backup of my computer using NTBackup.ese and I have a strange problem that I haven't encountered before. According to Windows Explorer, there is 77 GB of data on my C: drive. However, the .bkf file created by the backup is 151 GB - almost twice the size. Now my external drive is full and I can't do any more backups. I've extensively explored my hard drive, including looking at System and Hidden files, but I am unable to explain this discrepency. Does anyone know what happened?
I recently had to format my hard drive, and it created a backup folder for the old hard drive stuff for me. Now i realise that i dont need it, so i decided to delete it. I have been able to delete all of it apart from My Documents. Access is denied: make sure the drive isnt full or write protected.
I guess I have a few options (as I have backed up my entire hard drive before the problem started), including hiriing someone if need be. System info: Win XP Pro. For security use KIS 09 and Webroot SpySweeper (henceforth, WSS). This is my desktop. Laptop the same except for Win XP home. After I upgraded the WSS to their latest version (6.1.0.128) I had problems only on desktop and only with MSWord. After two days of working on desktop problem I discovered it was the WSS upgrade, as no problems if WSS shut down or removed via Windows add/remove.
I am trying to back up my data on to a rw disc now windows lets me do this but it will not let me change or alter the data on the disc after it says its read only I have been into properties to try and change to archive but still it will not let me please can some one tell me what I am doing wrong.I can back up on to floppy and change data without a problem so why can't I do this on a cd.
Future Shop seems to have decided last time when i brought my computer in that they would keep my XP CD for themselves, and now its been too long to go back and get it.I want to format my computer using the F11 key, i've heard that this is possible.
My pc is running a bit slow lately, got lots of stuff, too much on it.So I'd like to restore my pc back to factory settings. I have around 110 gig of stuff and I don't want to lose it. So I bought a firewire drive to back it all up on. My plan is, transfer all my data to the external hd. Then formatting my hd completley and rebooting as new, then transferring my needed data abck on to my pc.
I've never formatted before so not to sure how. My main worry is the pc not restarting. I have a start up cd that came with my pc but i have no windows xp cd it came pre installed.
Well, as the title suggests, i'm the latest in what is seemingly a long line of people having trouble attempting to perform the same task - reformatting a laptop running on Windows XP to run on a fresh, clean, smooth, lovely version of XP SP2.
I have read through every single topic with reference to what I am trying to do, and am still COMPLETELY lost. I have tried absolutely everything I can think of, my friend can think of, everything that has been suggested on various websites to no avail. I must just be doing things wrong.
My cpu kept crashing at random times so i decided to reformat , during re-formatting my cpu crashed now when i turn my cpu on it says and everything loads just before i can go on desktop it says winodws restarting and restarts my cpu ! and when i try and reformat it begins to reformat then minutes later says Error:missing files.
have to internal HD's. One has several large important files on it, including the OS XP, the other, I am going to format and install XP on this. I am switching HD's OS, for my own reasons. Ok, so my problem is, I need to leave these big files on this drive with the current OS loaded, so I won't loose them and when I go to boot windows from the new, fresh XP, I plan to unplug the other drive, which has windows on it, so it will not attempt to boot from 2 operating systems. Can I then, after XP has booted, plug in the old XP loaded HD, to then be able to xfer the big files from that to the other, without it having a conflict? If so, then I can format that drive and I'll be set. I don't have any other way of storing these file, during this transition. (no thumb drive or anything) Sorry if i have not explain well enough.
How do I format (or erase?) cd's that have info on them using XP? The help screens do not seem to cover this. My cmputer has a dvd-rom and a dvd/cd writer.
I was wondering if there was any way of uninstalling Windows XP WITHOUT reformatting my hard drive. I have Pro and Home on my drive, and I only installed the Home because there was something wrong with my Pro, and so I installed Home to see if I could fix the problem that way. It didn't work , so I just want to get Home off of there before I do any more damage with it.
I wanted to know if it was possible to reinstall the OS on the same partition on which it was formerly installed without uninstalling the first instance and still be able to use my programs. I know it is possible to have 2 instances of XP on the same partition. I just don't know if the programs of the first instance is accessible through the second. If not, how do I make it accessible?
I've backed up everything I need (tell me if something's missing: personal notes, favorites, saved games, personal projects, software settings, software and games installations, music)Now it's time to format and install.I've read a guide about how to install XP.And I honestly don't know what comes after that.Drivers? Which drivers? Windows update? Internet connection? DX? Can you list the actions needed to be done after installing XP, sorted chronologically?

I have a PC with Windows XP home. I am selling this PC without windows and want to format my C: drive. In the old days I would get Windows 98 to create a Bootable disk with a format command but Windows XP does not allow me to do this, I think. So what is the best way to format C: before selling my PC.
I've been having troubles recently with my pretty new laptop. It's a 3,06 ghz with 512 ram. I've been having performance related problems that where not there the first couple of months I had it. I suspect my installation of SP" for Windows XP had something to do. Now I want to format my harddrive, so I can have a fresh start on my computer, because having a 2000$ machine have such sucky performances kind of pisses me off.
I went to format my pc, using the recovery bootdisk i have.Im on XP.I put the disk in and typed in dos, format c:. everything seemed to be goin a ok and then it asked for teh volume label, i pressed enter then rebooted my pc with the disk in again. I then typed format c: again as i thought the origional format didnt happen. I then get a message saying that this disk is not able to format. the bootdisk also doesnt seem to load correctly now either.

My pc has become clogged up with programs and therefore i am looking to format and re-install windows xp. I know there is a guide to the re-installation of windows but that is only to repair and not to format.
