PQBoot Run On NTFS Disk Which Will Now Not Boot

Apr 6, 2005

While in XP I ran PQBoot from the Partition Magic 7 Start Menu, it loaded a command window and asked which O/S I wanted to load - foolishly I entered 2 for Red Hat 9 and pressed enter. (Dumb I know, and changing my mind 1 microsecond later was still too late.)When it rebooted it said "Autocheck not available" and rebooted.
I booted the XP CD and chose the second recovery option but the list of partitions had at the top a partition that was not C:Windows, I can't remember exactly what it said but used drive I: and some other description. So I exited without doing anything to do more research.I booted Knoppix 3.7 live Linux CD and that reassuringly showed all the drive partitions still where they should be especially hda1 my Windows partition.

NTFS Dynamic Disk Unreadable

Sep 20, 2004

I have two hard drives in my computer. The first disk contains XP and the software, the second contains personal stuff. The second disk is installed using NTFS dynamic disk. Last weekedend I formated the XP disk, and installed XP again. After installing, the second disk comes up as "unreadable" dynamic disk. Is there a way to make it readable? I haven't done anything to it, so all the data should be there.

First Fat32 Now Ntfs: Hard Disk Not Detecting?

Oct 10, 2005

I had a 40 gig hard drive : then bought myself an 80 gig to accomodate the huge amount of music I had collected: essentially using the second hard drive merely as a storage space: i.e. it had no windows or other interface installed upon it and was run from harddrive number 1 (40gig) due to long overdue need of formating : I reformatted harddrive 1 and following said format I couldnt read hard drive 2 (with all my beloved music) through windows

after much headscratching I remembered that my original windows was fat 32 win xp pro and this new format job was ntfs win xp homeI havent had a chance to test my hard drive on a fat 32 driven pc yet : and i was posting here in the hope that someone could enlighten me on whether it is worth trying another format job with fat 32 and xp pro or whether there is anyway i can convert the 2nd hard drive to ntfs.

Recovering Data Back From NTFS Hard Disk?

Sep 16, 2006

I am having a problem with my 400GB HDD not displaying correctly - it displays as 127GB - in a new install of Windows XP on a seperate drive. My original setup was as follows:400GB SATA HDD with Windows XP as the Operating System plus Data - Single Partition - NTFS. 300GB SATA HDD with purely data - Single Partition - NTFS.I bought a new HDD today (SATA 320GB) and installed it in the PC. The original XP install saw it was installed and offered formatting options from Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management - no formatting options were taken.I then installed Windows XP (non-SP2 install, SP2 has been installed afterwards along with Video Card and Motherboard drivers) to the new HDD without removing the old drives first.

NTFS And External USB Hard Disk - Store Virtual Pc Files

Feb 25, 2005

I have Win XP Pro SP2 I also have an external Lacie 250GB hard disk I want to store my Virtual PC files on. But, it is formatted at FAT32 and I can't put a file on there that is over 4GB. So, I tried to convert the drive to NTFS, but Windows won't let me do this. It keeps telling me the disk is dirty and to run chkdsk / f. Which I have done and completes fine finding no problems on the drive. Yet convert e: /fs:NTFS still does not convert the drive reporting it is dirty. What is causing this and how do I fix it? I have tons of data on the drive so I can't re-partition it as I don't want to loose that data. I need to convert it to NTFS.

Black With Something About A System Disk Error Ntfs.sys Missing/corrupt?

Sep 20, 2005

When left for a while (about half an hour), I come back to it and see that the screen is black with something about a system disk error. I experienced this before I had to re-install windows a few weeks back. The first time, I pressed enter, and the system started up fine. The second time, the secondary loading screen (that's what I call it...it's like little white rectangles at the bottom of a black screen...you know the ne, right?). Well yeah that goes really really slow. When it get's a few inches in, it stops and tells me 'system32driverstfs.sys is missing or corrupt'.

Converting External Hard Disk From Fat 32 To NTFS Without Loosing Data?

Aug 5, 2007

I have an EXTERNAL HD. I formatted it in FAT a few months ago. Ever since then, my laptop PC was unable to recognize the unit, but the Mac (which is not working right now, unfortunately) never had a problem with it. When I connect it to my laptop PC via USB, the USB icon shows up and the "USB Mass Storage Device Properties" says the "device is working properly." But the folder doesn't show up in My Computer, and diskmgmt.msc says the device is "Unallocated." Hopefully that doesn't mean the unit crashed because I have some stuff on there.Without losing the data (that should be on it, unless it crashed), I want to convert this thing to NTFS. I did some Google searching, but the instructions on how to do this (they say use convert.exe) aren't working. Moreover, no one mentioned how to convert an External, secondary HD.

Can't Run Disk Error Check - Ntfs File System Not Open

Jun 22, 2005

A week after updating to most current Windows SP1critical updates (its only change I can think of) I happen to notice that I cannot run a disk error check, I am told that its a NTFS file system and Win cannot open volume for check. Also when I start computer I have to log on with my password every. I have tried to eliminate the password requirement to no avail. I cannot return to pre-update status with System Restore because its been a week and there is too much new data in the system. This is a free standing desktop PC. Can anyone help with these two things? I hope so as I do my error check regularly and find it frustrating to have to log on every time I restart .

I've got a corrupted load of XP that will not boot up. Is there a way to boot into a DOS shell with NTFS support so I can see my files and then copy them to a second hard-drive. I used to do this often with 95/98, just add in a second(slave) hard drive and then boot with a DOS disk and copy the files to the second drive then I could format and reload the original HD. I haven't been able to do this with NTFS volumes, if you boot from a DOS disk you don't see anything

I understand that the Mac OSX reads/not writes NTFS but will read/write FAT32. Having been advised by other senior Windows users many years back, all my HDDs are in NTFS. I have found no solution to convert NTFS back to FAT32. Does anyone know if you can do so; without damage/corruption? There is much family pictures, common music in these external HDDs; so needless to say, they are precious
