Sep 24, 2005
i have a 20 gig hd (maxtor) that is not showing in windows xp. the drive is NTFS and is fine and does show in cmos but once loaded into windows it is not there. i had the drive previously in another system as a slave only for mp3's. It was formatted NTFS prior to transferring mp3's to it. Issue 1 :
I have bought the current hard disk one month back due to failure of the previous one. Both are of Seagate. My PC stuck up suddenly while working with the noise from hard disk ( clicking noise ) When I restarts the PC the PC stops booting after the BIOS screen with the error messages like "unable to load OS" or "disk not found". If I remove and replace the hard disk connection, it works normally. But, the PC stuck up after 1 day or after few hours. I have performed the hard disk self tests with Seatools software from Seagate.

applications were running slow, having problems closing etc. I expected a virus problem, but NIS 2005 did not detect any viruses. This morning I attempted to boot the machine as usual, and I found that windows would not boot after repeated attempts in any mode. I borrowed a friends windows XP cd, i dont have mine on hand, and attempted to repair the installation. However, when it tried to copy files to the hard drive it said that it could not detect it.
Naturally, seeing this i assumed that the harddrive had gotten knocked around, bad power lead, etc. I made sure that the connecters were securely attached and booted again, repair etc, same problem. I believe that the problem lies with the configuration of using a PCI card to connect the hard drive to the motherboard. When its connected to the mother board, however, the boot agent wont run, saying that the "disk is not ready" or something to that extent.

I had a 40 gig hard drive : then bought myself an 80 gig to accomodate the huge amount of music I had collected: essentially using the second hard drive merely as a storage space: i.e. it had no windows or other interface installed upon it and was run from harddrive number 1 (40gig) due to long overdue need of formating : I reformatted harddrive 1 and following said format I couldnt read hard drive 2 (with all my beloved music) through windows
after much headscratching I remembered that my original windows was fat 32 win xp pro and this new format job was ntfs win xp homeI havent had a chance to test my hard drive on a fat 32 driven pc yet : and i was posting here in the hope that someone could enlighten me on whether it is worth trying another format job with fat 32 and xp pro or whether there is anyway i can convert the 2nd hard drive to ntfs.

I am having a problem with my 400GB HDD not displaying correctly - it displays as 127GB - in a new install of Windows XP on a seperate drive. My original setup was as follows:400GB SATA HDD with Windows XP as the Operating System plus Data - Single Partition - NTFS. 300GB SATA HDD with purely data - Single Partition - NTFS.I bought a new HDD today (SATA 320GB) and installed it in the PC. The original XP install saw it was installed and offered formatting options from Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management - no formatting options were taken.I then installed Windows XP (non-SP2 install, SP2 has been installed afterwards along with Video Card and Motherboard drivers) to the new HDD without removing the old drives first.

I have Win XP Pro SP2 I also have an external Lacie 250GB hard disk I want to store my Virtual PC files on. But, it is formatted at FAT32 and I can't put a file on there that is over 4GB. So, I tried to convert the drive to NTFS, but Windows won't let me do this. It keeps telling me the disk is dirty and to run chkdsk / f. Which I have done and completes fine finding no problems on the drive. Yet convert e: /fs:NTFS still does not convert the drive reporting it is dirty. What is causing this and how do I fix it? I have tons of data on the drive so I can't re-partition it as I don't want to loose that data. I need to convert it to NTFS.

I have an EXTERNAL HD. I formatted it in FAT a few months ago. Ever since then, my laptop PC was unable to recognize the unit, but the Mac (which is not working right now, unfortunately) never had a problem with it. When I connect it to my laptop PC via USB, the USB icon shows up and the "USB Mass Storage Device Properties" says the "device is working properly." But the folder doesn't show up in My Computer, and diskmgmt.msc says the device is "Unallocated." Hopefully that doesn't mean the unit crashed because I have some stuff on there.Without losing the data (that should be on it, unless it crashed), I want to convert this thing to NTFS. I did some Google searching, but the instructions on how to do this (they say use convert.exe) aren't working. Moreover, no one mentioned how to convert an External, secondary HD.

I have a second hard drive that's started spontaneously dissappearing lately. The first time it happened it came back after a reboot (or two?). This time it doesn't come back at all. The computer is a Dell Dimension 4600 2.4GHz running Windows XP Home (yeah, I know), with 512MB Ram, two 80GB internal drives and an external SCSI VideoRaid. I'm pretty sure I've got the cable selections to master and slave but might have cable select jumpered (have to double check).
The even viewer shows Errors 9 and 11 in both this case and the former occurance. I thought maybe the drive was going bad but it's less than a year old and had no problems when it was the second drive in my PIII. It's a Western Digital 7200RPM special edition with 8MB cache and has previously performed flawlessly.

I got a new motherboard installed because my old one fried itself and the pc was reformatted and windows was reinstalled. Since then, it was working fine. The start-up time had also lowered considerably and it was working perfectly for once. One thing that's been happening for a while, my computer started taking longer to start-up. I figured it was just all the programs etc I have installed. Then, I have this one external drive that I got connected internally. There were times where it wouldn't recognize this drive; it wouldn't show up on My Computer. Otherwise, it was perfectly fine. one of my most important drives (E) has been missing for the last 2 days. it hasn't shown up even once and i'm really worried i've lost data and need to recover it.

For the past two weeks, when I start or restart my Dell Dimension 8250 running Windows XP Home Edition, it passes through a blue page with a Windows label that says: "Checking the file system on C; The type of file is NTFS; Cannot open volume for direct access; Windows has finished checking the disk." Otherwise the computer seems to start up normally and operate as usual. Something has changed and I don't know what the problem may be.

If I want to attach second hard disk with the same configuration of master hard disk, then system doesn't show second hard disk altogether or new hard disk begin to malfunction. Such as suddenly begin to give sounds like TICK, TICK TICK. Suddenly vanishes from the 'MY COMPUTER' drives. Suddenly denies to copy paste functions. BIOS shows both SATA drives. But Win XP doesn't load or simply hangs while starting up [booting up]. It happens when I attach second SATA drive with system. If only one SATA is attached, then WIN XP boots normally.

I was aware that Windows used to have limitations on the size of Hard Disk Drives for file sizes etc. but I had thought that these had now been fixed with XP & XP PRO. I installed a new 250GB into a friends machine about a month ago & this went without incident. Yesterday I just put into an external caddie a USB2 drive of 300GB into my machine. XP Pro recognizes the drive & it will work but my computer displays the size as only 127GB which is less than half 's true size.

"Floppy Disk not Recognized in Clean Install"
I am attempting a clean installation of Windows XP on a new disk. I have 3rd party drivers to install but the system at this step fails to recognize the floppy drive. At least it fails to respond to the F6 > S > 'Insert ... floppy disk ...' sequence. The drive is required for the floppy disks on which the drivers are located.
Is there a way around this, putting them on a CD or USB since some computers are coming now without floppy disks.
BTW the floppy drives works with an Alt. Boot using Win 2K Pro

My USB flash disk is no longer recognized by XP on my Toshiba laptop, nor is my USD card reader, and it will not allow me to even install it although I have the driver disk. I have tried downloading drivers from MSN, service packs, gone through set up in the device manager, EVERYTHING! My flash disk works on every other computer but mine. I did get a couple of trojans, but I deleted them with MCafee and cleaned them as well.

There was a power outage at my house yesterday while I was away. When I came home my computer screen was black and displayed the message: boot disk error, insert system disk and press enter.
I tried rebooting but the message persisted (after going through the initial information about IDE stuff). I went into the bios to see if my hard drive was dead, but the bios still recognized it and my secondary hard drive. I also tried to boot from a Window XP cd and repair Windows on my master drive, but the error message came up regardless of the cd drive I used I have a CD drive and a CDRW/DVD drive. In both instances where I had the CD in one of the two CD drives, the CD was spinning and presumably being read) but I could never get the computer to boot off of it. (Note: I tried both CD drives, because my bios is set to boot off CD first, although I don't know which CD drive it actually looks at first

I have two hard drives that were working perfectly on XP. I thentook out the second hard drive because I wanted to try and fix anotherhard drive. When I was finished I then put the original second harddrive back and now it is not recognized anywhere. Why? I may have moved the jumpers but I am pretty sure I did not. Even so I checked the picture on the hard drive and put them in the proper place. Why is the same drive now not recognized when it was just a day ago? I need to getsome files from it

It's not present in the device manager and all shortcuts to it are null. All the bables are correctly installed and I've tried rebooting, re-installing the drive to no avail.
