Jul 25, 2009
everytime i plug in a usb/external hardrive, it isnt recognized in my computer, its not too do with any hardware, im 100% its a software issue, and i was running a program and it seemed to do something nothing comes up in my computer but you hear the connected sound, ive tried assignign a manual drive letter but it comes up with an error. and seeing as i cant back anything up because nothings regonized
both my externals are perfectly fine....they work on my other computer. Originally when i plugged them into my laptop the Found New Hardware wizard would startup, but be unable to do anything.
everytime i start my pc i get the following message: error auto-sensing primary hard disk drive 0 strike the f1 key to continue, f2 to run the setup utility.
when i push f1 the same message will pop up.if i go into the setup utility and look at the primary drive 0 it says hard drive.it stands on auto but it doesnt show the capacity. the same thing with the secondary rive 1.i have 2 hard drives.1 with 20 gig and the second 1 with 250 gig.both arent recognized by my pc.i cant format the pc cause i dont have hard drives to install xp on >.<
My USB External Hard Drive suddenly decided to stop working monday before last, it is weird, like it will turn on and all, but it doesnt get recognized and while its on none of my programs will load like Ventrilo and games(ventrillo will half load but not all the way) and the computer wont shutdown while its on. but the moment i turn it off they all start running smoothly agian and the computer will shutdown immediatly (if i am at the shutdown screen). Any idea why/how this happened and how to fix it?
I have a sata 500 GB hard drive from Seagate that just won't get recognized. I've been in Disk Management, I've scanned the disk, I've rebooted, and Disk 1 is there, but the message is it's offline--and after I did the reboot I got the message that the hard drive USB had been recognized--but it ain't there.
I had to do an reformat on my PC. Before the reformat, my PC read both my external hard drives no problem. Then after the reformat, it only would read one. When I would restart with both connected, it wouldn't budge from the welcome screen. After I would unplug the "questionable" one, it would then allow me to log in as usual. I think it could be a driver issue but I'm not totally sure because it does read it after a little while. I changed the USB cable, so for now, it is holding. Can anybody figure out what it might be?
i have unsuccessfully tried to install a maxtor and a western digital external hard drive. in both cases, i tried both usb 2.0 and firewire. both ports are good. the new hardware "wizard" cant install the new hardware because it cannot find the drivers. i thought xp had all the drivers. the really annoying part is that my kids p.o.s. off-the-shelf emachine recognized and installed both drives! i am currently running peripherals on both usb and firewire with no problems.
After backing up on this drive for nine months (and with a reformating three months ago), now the backup will not recognize the E: drive. No error message is given. MY Computer shows that it is now 3/4 full with plenty of space (46 gig) on the Acomodate 160 gig drive under NTSF format. I am thinking of changing to a fire wire from the USB.I have been doing a complete system backup and maybe I'll change to just backing up my documents after we get it working.
Got a Western Digital My Book essential edition USB 160GB, reformatted it from FAT32 to NTFS, backed up everything I wanted and did the clean install. It worked. I had a few problems getting the OS to recognize my USB Canoscan, but worked that out. My problem now is that the OS won't see the external hard drive unless I'm in safe mode. In safe mode it is assigned drive letter J, which was the same drive letter it was before the OS reinstall. It does not show up in drive manager. Nothing changes in device manager when I unplug/replug it and no new hardware is found. Device manager does show an unknown device, but that was there before anything was plugged in (which is distressing in itself!)
I have a Sabrent SBT-EKU25 external enclosure with a 2.5 inch hard disk in it. This is a USB 2.0 drive and whenever I connect it to USB 2.0 port, it is not recognized (or "recognized" as an unknown device" ) on all my machines. It however is recognized as a drive and works fine on one laptop which has only USB 1.1 ports.I have tried separately powered USB hubs as well without success. So I don't think it's a power issue.I have even tried deleting all USB devices in Device Manager and let the machine rediscover them.
When trying to perform the following cmd instruction C:Documents and Settings......ping I get the following error message 'ping' is not recognized as a internal or external command
when trying to type a command in MS-DOS, I get the below error message. This is the same for an IPCONFIG or a PING command. Does anyone know how to correct this? I have win XP SP1 'ipconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
I have a Western Digital Passport 320GB External Harddrive that is no longer recognized by the computer. It worked two days ago... now nothing. I get a pop up when I plug it in that states: USB Device Not Recognized.I checked Device Manager: Universal Serial Bus Controllers-Unknown Device. It's not a drive letter issue. Windows XP SP3 does not recognize it all.
I recently re-installed a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro because of a patched user32 virus that caused me problems it seems to be gone now since the re-install. But now since I re-installed Windows XP, my dvd and cd drives don't show up in Windows. In BIOS they are recognized as ch.0 master and ch.0 slave drives. But in Windows they're not there in My Computer or Device Manager. I pop in a disc and it spins around but nothing happens.
I have upgraded from windows 98 se to windows xp pro sp2 and when I did I no longer have cd and dvd listed in the device manager. I reformatted and put 98 back on and they are there and work fine. How do I get xp ro recognize my drives. I have a Dell Dimension XPS T800r with an NEC DV-5700A dvd and a SONY CD-RW CRS140E. I get a message when I log on to windows that windows could not load the installer for diskdrive and to contact my hardware manufacrer. Dell of course doesn't seem to have a clue about what is happening so any suggestions on how to get the drives back
Recently, whenever I connect a USB flash drive to my PC Windows displays it as an 'unknown device' and says it can't be recognised and has malfunctioned. I have used 2 separate USB flash drives which are both different makes and different sizes, but both come up with this error. I have tried both on different USB ports and the result is the same. I tried both on different PCs, and they worked fine. I've connected other USB devices, such as headsets and external hard drives with no problems, it just seems to be flash drives.I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling my USB controllers but to no avail, still says they've both malfunctioned. I'm using XP SP2.
I'm in the process of building a new computer to replace my old AMD 2800+ system. I would like to use one of my old hard drives that has all my files and programs on it without having to do a complete reformate and fresh install of winxp. Is this possible? and how do I go about doing this?
Win XP Professional in new Dell Vostro does not recognize Bytecc 320 external hsng with 250 gb Seagate drive. Under hardware manager it shows up and says this device working properly. XP does not assign a drive letter. Disk management shows device but reports it as 128 Gb capacity. I do not want to settle for half the drive's capacity so i did not create a partition.
I'm currently running windows XP Pro on one Hard drive. I also have second hard drive which has some data in it but not plug in to my system right now. Is it possible that i can plug in my second hard drive as slave (by jumper setting) without turning off my computer, and beable to see and transfer data from my second hard drive to my first hard drive. Is it safe and possible to do that?
I have transferred a Hard Drive into another computer and thought I had to re-install Windows (XP Home) - this I did.In so doing I created another Folder - Windows2 so as not to overwrite anything. I have a Windows folder as well.I also still have a Windows98 Folder on this drive.I cannot access the latest e-mails in the new configuration - or anything else for that matter and know that I am going to have to reinstall all programs. How and where do I find those missing e-mails, or can I uninstall this new version and revert to the old one?
I was hit by a virus and now I can't access my hard drives from My Computer. I get a message "Windows Script Host" and "cannot find script file, "C:autorun.vbs" when I click on my "C" icon. Right clicking gives me gibberish in the menu box where the "Open" should be. I can still get through to the contents via My Documents and up-leveling.
I have an HP Pavillion zv5000.Windows xp sp2.I was online and the laptop and got a blue screen of death don't recall exactly what it said, something about ie encountering an error and needing to shut down.Went to reboot, and it tried to boot off of LAN.checked my BIOS everything seemed fine, disabled that boot option. Tried to reboot again, got a plashing flat cursor in upper left hand corner.Tried to use Norton Disk, scanned memory only.Did not scan boot.Tried to use XP disk to repair, and it came up with screen saying that it could not find any hard drives on this computer. What happened to me, is it viral, or hardware. This laptop is only a year old, but no longer under warranty.
my external hard drive all of a sudden stopped showing up in "my computer" and a can't find it anywhere else. it make the hardware sound when I plug it in but nothing shows up. when I plug it in another port it comes up with a message saying "USb device not recognized. one of the usb device attached to this computer has malfunction and windows cannot recognize it
How do I install 2 hard drives from seperate computers into 1 computer? I have tried the plug and play routine without success. Both hard drives have the XP OS on them and they work in their respective chassis. I know that one will have to be the master and the other the slave but I am not sure how to set everything up. Additionally, their are many programs and drivers on the prospective slave that need to be accessible.
I just tried to reformat and install windows XP home edition, and upon coming to the screen of "Repair" or "Install fresh copy" I received an error reporting:Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.Setup cannot continue. To quit setup, press F3.I was trying to use ubuntu but my ram wasn't high enough, so now it won't let me run windows xp again.
I recently was forced to do a re-install of XP to clean up a few bugs. The system has 3 hard drives, but since the reinstall, only the C: drive appears. The other two are nowhere to be found.I've tried mapping to them, but they just don't show up there as a mapping option.Anyone have any advice? When I added the extra hard drives I didn't have an available slot and did have to create a partition. I no longer have the software I had originally used though. Do I need it to make the 2 other drives visable?
I have a major problem with my Packard Bell iMedia D815AW home desktop. Ever since I installed a Lite-On DVD-RW into it, it started making a lot of noise (a bit like the sound of a typewriter tapping) and started crashing. I removed the DVD-RW drive, only for the problem to continue. The computer kept crashing (often showing the blue crash screen, other times showing a black 'insert floppy disk' screen, sometimes just restarting itself). Running the Windows disk check utility at start-up would not work - the computer would freeze while the disk scan occured (I tried many times). I ran disk registery programs (ie- Registry Mechanic, etc), anti-virus software, defragmentation, etc. etc. but the problem remained. Yesterday, I decided I would try reinstalling (or restoring?) Windows XP again (with the intention of fixing the problem without deleting my personal files on the computer). However, upon instertion of the disk, Windows XP claimed it could not reinstall, as the Windows version on my computer was too recent. I assumed that the reason for this was that I had installed Windows XP Serice Pack 2 and so the version was too recent for the installation disk. So, I thought I would uninstall service pack 2 and then try to reinstall Windows XP. However, while uninstalling service pack 2, the computer crashed. Since then, whenever I try to startup Windows, the computer restarts after about 30 seconds of loading. I can enter the startup screen which gives you access to entering through Safe Mode, Debugging, etc - however entering through these modes has the same problem though with the computer restarting before reaching Windows. So, I entered the computer BIOS at startup and changed it to load via CD, inserting the Windows XP disk. I tried to use the 'Recovery Console' option, however the error message "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" showed. It then asked me to restart the computer by hitting F3. I then tried to use the Windows install option by restarting the computer and loading the Windows XP disk, but the same "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" message showed. So, i cant load the computer, nor reinstall the software. I dont want to lose all the files on my computer.
my daughters computer needs to have windows xp pro reinstalled. the computer used to have a raid setup but when one of the hard drives started to fail she brought it to the computer shop and they disconnected the raid and told her the drives were separated but not to put anything important on the one drive as its not so good. so last night we tried to reinstall windows . It came to can not read drive F. Options were fail, abort or retry. Nothing worked. so she called the the computer shop and they said it was because of the raid thing when. So they told her to go to gateway sight and put a program called serial ata on a disk and install it to her computer...
